Lunchtime!

Dogs in restaurants are the norm in France. Here an older lady proudly shows off her lunch companion at Le Balico - my favourite Menton restaurant - or have I told you that before? Of course I have! I went yesterday and this lady and her dog were at the next table. We had moules, followed by tortellini with ricotta and basil. Yummy.

Are dogs allowed in restaurants in your country?

Note: Since posting this, sadly Le Balico has been sold and is now under new management.

  1. From California:

No, dogs are not allowed in restaurants here, and I'm glad. I'm one of the world's greatest francophiles but dog-worship is not France's best feature by any means.

Moules and a nice Picpoul de Pinet --- THAT'S more like it!

  2. In NYC, the department of health are very strict about NOT allowing animals into restaurants and grocery stores except if the dogs are eye-seeing dogs or seizure detection dogs.

Only restaurants with outdoor seatings allow dogs to dine with the owner, but not at the table.

  3. Here in Austin there are some restaurants who will allow dogs on their outside terraces. I think the world would be a better place with more dogs and less fuddyduddy people.

  4. No dogs in Wisconsin restaurants, but oddly enough, the presence of dogs in French eating places does not really bother me too much. French dogs are generally well behaved, I have found.

  5. We are lucky in Florida - because of the perpetual warm weather, we can dine outside, on the patios, where dogs are allowed.
The lady just exudes that joie-de-vivre!

  7. I absolutely love Menton. It is my favorite place on the blue coast. I think this photo is warm and sunny and sweet. The dog is not much for posing, or is not in the mood, but the lovely woman wants him to look pretty for the camera.

Love your photography today. So nice to see living souls and not so much concrete, plaster and asphalt -- don't you agree? I like these two pictures it speaks volumes about your restaurants and customs that are totally different.

Dogs or pets are not permitted in any restaurant or grocery store or in most other business establishments unless they are the seeing eye dogs and those must be wearing the appropriate vest.

  12. No dogs allowed in restaurants or shops here in Canada, except for working dogs.... guide dogs for the blind or the hearing impaired.

  13. Dogs probably wouldn't be allowed in too many restaurants here in South Africa (not that I've ever tried taking one in...), but to be honest, I think French dogs (or maybe all dogs) are better behaved than many people's children. We have quite a problem here with people allowing their children to climb on restaurant seats and tables and make a huge noise and generally irritate other diners - seat me next to a doggy any day. (Then again, in my limited experience, French children seem to be very well-behaved too... you're clearly doing something right.)

  14. I was in Ireland heading for a small bookshop, and saw the big sign on the bookshop door ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS ALLOWED INSIDE. I went inside and two dogs were lounging around... so much for the sign.

  16. No, they're not allowed, but I wish they were! This is what I like about Europe...among other things!
