Donkey Track

This is the old donkey track from Saint Agnès to the centre of Menton. The sign indicates it takes two hours. There are donkey tracks leading from all the hill villages around Menton to the town itself and at one time, this was the only method of getting supplies to and from a village.

Now these donkey tracks are used by hikers and it's one of the most glorious ways to see this part of the Côte d'Azur. I've walked the track from Gorbio to Sainte Agnès with my best buddy, Candy, and I suspect when she next comes to stay, we'll be walking this track. I'd better get in shape because if you walk down - guess what? - you've got to walk back up again for your car!

Note the viewing platform in the middle distance and below you'll see a better view of it. If you click on THIS LINK and scroll down to the second photograph, you'll see just how far we are from the sea and why it takes 2 hours to walk this track.

  3. Almost all hiking paths have this similar challenge. But few would have these views or history. Personally I like hiking trails which lead in a circle such that you don't have to go back over the same ground.

  5. Oh wow Jilly, whenever I come and visit the area, walking this track is the kind of thing I'd love to do!

  6. OK. I agree that might be a nice hike, though named donkey track... But would suggest a one way trip: four in a car; two left down, walk up; the other two, start up and come down; when they meet, transfer key! Arrive to the top, pick the car and catch the others. Now, who goes up?
    Have a great weekend!

  7. Just like at the Grand Canyon! Hikers get lost and in trouble for failing to realize how hard it is to walk down into the canyon. I like this shot.

  8. Jilly, spectacular views. I am jealous (having never lived anywhere where there a spot higher than the Interstate overpass).

  9. My goodness, what a view that must be from the platform. With my fear of heights, I'm certain that I'd never be able to see it if I lived in Menton, so thank you for showing it to me!
