Daily Photo Theme Day: Bridges
If you live in the south of France - towards Italy - where the Alpes come down to the sea, you can't avoid the autoroute. Endless tunnels, on both sides of the border, were cut through the mountains. Bridges were built to join tunnel to tunnel, such as this one which spans part of the Gorbio valley above Menton. The autoroute in the south of France was finished around 1977.
Hardly beautiful and not known as a bridge - just the autoroute - but as I said, part of life here and at least it keeps through traffic from clogging up the lower corniches more that it does. Also, an amazing feat of engineering.
Today is Theme Day for the Daily Photo Family with over 120 of us posting photographs of a bridge from our city or town. Do take time to visit and enjoy:

The second very tall bridge I see tonight. I think this one is even taller. Wow! Nice photo, Jilly.
ReplyDeleteI think your bridge is as tall (or taller?) than mine today. You're up early and I'm just going to bed. Have a good week-end!!
ReplyDeleteVery impressive! As I visit bridges around the world I am reminded at just how smart and industrious we people are.
ReplyDeleteNow this is a TALL bridge! Happy Theme Day!
ReplyDeletemy neck hurts!
ReplyDeleteWow. That is a high bridge. Almost too high to commit suicide from. A leap from there would be hopeless.
ReplyDelete16 Ghosts on Bridge?
dangerous bridge.
ReplyDeleteNot for the "fear of heights" sufferes ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh, it's a bridge all right!
ReplyDeleteThat is a very impressive bridge. I would think it would be pretty neat to drive over it. (Coming from Flat Florida)
ReplyDeleteI love a bridge with a good description. And you're right--what a feat of engineering!
ReplyDeleteInteresting, a bridge which is not called a bridge ... I wonder what the sign in the middle of the bridge is for and why it appears to be parallel with traffic such that it would be very hard to read.
ReplyDeleteThe valley scenery is gorgeous as a backdrop to this engineering feat.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Isabella--kind of scary if heights aren't your thing. Great photo.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lovely area for traveling in and out of tunnels, around stretches of mountains, across bridges. If I was driving - I'd have a hard time keeping my eyes on the road, I'd want to be taking in all the surrounding views.
ReplyDeleteThats a high bridge!
ReplyDeleteWhat a handsome and tall bridge you got there. I really like the angle where you shot this picture.
ReplyDeleteVery tall bridge, not very beautiful but it does what is it supposed to do.
ReplyDeleteYou said it, Jilly! An amazing feat of engineering. . . .How the heck do they build those things?
ReplyDeleteThat is such a wonderful shot! You stood at the right spot to capture the bridge.

The bridge is so strange. So unusual. But it makes a great photo!
ReplyDeleteYes, these high bridges over gorges are pretty amazing. What always astonds me is that when you travel on them you are hardly aware that you are so elevated (well that's a good thing, of course! And we don;t want people distracted by views either)
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting me in hospital! I feel better already
I'm sure I've driven on that bridge.
ReplyDeleteI love the blue sky in the backround and the wisps of clouds. Very nice shot!
ReplyDeleteHi Jilly - good to be back.
ReplyDeleteAnother bridge that has given me vertigo today - towering is certainly the word that comes to mind!!!
Yep, that's definitely a bridge, and a great shot.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you successfully climbed out of that steep valley without meeting too many 'serpenti' !
It's definitely a bridge, and a pretty one! I think. I posted a similar one from Italy today. I think it's a bridge--what else would it be? I guess they don't name them like smaller bridges,, but that's quite a feat of architecture! Cool shot.
ReplyDeleteI've been out and so didn't get to see all the theme day shots. Interesting bridge. I'm going to guess 185 feet?

It looks like a bridge to me!
ReplyDeleteMy first thought is bungee jumping. :-)
ReplyDeleteNot that I have tried it before myself.
Impressive bridge spanning quite high!
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful photo. Wow...quite high up!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beauty....... and so scary. I always wonder how they manage to build bridges in the most difficult terrain.
