Château of Roquebrune - the Kitchen - 1

All the rooms in the castle have an iron door to prevent vicitor access. After all, we all walk around alone - no guide as such - merely the audio commentary we listen to. In previous photographs I've pushed the camera through the bars as I did for the one below.

In this small space, meals were prepared for the soldiers from the Middle Ages onwards. It was actually restored in the 16th century. The mantlepiece in the photo below is made of olive wood.

Tomorrow, we see the bread oven. And also a storage area. After that - fresh air again!

  2. Not exactly a Betty Crocker kitchen, is it?

  3. I was going to ask why they decided to restrict access to the kitchen and then I noticed the "engravings" around the fireplace... Some people can be so, well, you know. :(

Food preparation didn't take much back then. We are so spoiled these days, aren't we?

  6. I can imagine a family sitting near the heath during winter months to stay warm and wait for the stew to boil.

  8. It sure makes a microwave oven look convenient ... Your photos and tour are great. The last tour I took they did not allow cameras. Had they allowed camera's I'm sure I would have enjoyed myself more.

  10. The cook seems to have had trouble getting warm.

Actually, I think this is so interesting, to be able to see this wonderful place inside and out.
