The Paraphernalia of a Picnic
People love sitting on the wall near to the Bastion. And how organised this couple are: rug to sit on, mugs, flask, looks like wooden plates, cutlery.
Personally I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of lugging all the paraphernalia. Great to sit on the wall and ponder the view but then I'd want to find a table outside a bar, order a noisette and a brioche sucré - and watch the world go by. Wouldn't do for us all to be the same, tho, would it?

I like to sit by the sea. But I agree. I couldn't be bothered to take all this stuff with me.
ReplyDeleteI suspect that's why sea side cafes always do so well.
Maybe they need to escape people.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you can get much better than these last two pictures, Jilly. Wow. Nice photography.
ReplyDeleteAbraham Lincoln in Brookville, Ohio.
Wonderful picture. A great way to spend an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteObviously not British - they're not on fold-up chairs in a carpark or lay-by ;-)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photo!! WOW!!
ReplyDeleteBTW, all I see on your blog is a small box where the photo should be - I right clicked, opened in a new window, and was able to see the photo!
Blanket, thermos and some finger food - carried in a backpack, is as much as we would ever bother to bring with us to a place like that IF there are no cafes around.
ReplyDelete(I can see the photo without problems, btw.)
George I've left a message on your blog. Thanks Fenix for mentioning you can see the photo. Having appeared on the portal, I assumed all was well.
ReplyDeleteit's nice to see people with their own stuff to enjoy while out there...
ReplyDeleteHow fine a moment this would be, to sit by the sea with a good friend. But, wait, there are fine moments everywhere, aren't there, if we only remember to stop and experience them. I really like this photo for that reminder.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate the attention to detail (something my mother would have done). But, Jilly I am with you, give me a nice seaside bar and I am good. by the way, i did not win last nights lottery, so you will not be seeing me in Menton.
ReplyDeleteThose are some serious picknikers, obvious veterans of this art of dining ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you Jilly, at the table, sipping my noisette...
un beau moment de repos, et de méditation je trouve.
ReplyDeleteNothing better than good scenery with a friend. Love the fact that the woman is still wearing her purse. I guess I wouldn't bother to bring one.
ReplyDeleteYou've met two "professional" of picnic! I am not as organized...I always forget something!
ReplyDeleteJilly, I am never tired with views like yesterday...Wonderful!
What a beautiful scene and a good idea!
ReplyDeleteWhen I come visit you in Menton, we will have to do this. :-)
Nice moment in time photo ... Personally I would enjoy and go to the effort to bring the paraphernalia ... It is rapidly approaching outdoor event time in our city and we often carry bag chairs to event. I will have to look at upgrading to include picnic paraphernalia.
ReplyDeleteLouis la Vache likes the seaside photos he is seeing in this, his first visit to your Menton Daily Photo. Louis is adding a link to Menton Daily Photo at San Francisco Bay Daily Photo.

I agree it is too much to carry all that stuff!!! I'd rather stop at the bakery and grab a loaf of bread, some cheese and wine...
ReplyDeleteAt least they didn't bring the kitchen sink with them. Nothing better than eating fish & chips out of the paper and watching the would go by.
ReplyDeleteI guess they where good pupils in school and learnt well lesson "The virtue of patience" ...
ReplyDeleteI think they're tourists, Jilly. Either way, it's a wonderful photo. For me, either a cafe table or a rug on the wall would suit. I must say that I often take a small coffee thermos with me because I don't drink alcohol and sometimes it's hard to find a coffee at a picnic unless you take your own.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Jilly....but it is a charming scene!
ReplyDeleteOh that yellow rug! it adds a great dimension to the photo!
ReplyDeleteNow Jilly you have to tell me more about what I see as a tap or teapot with water or tea pouring into one of the mugs on the lady's left-hand side. Amazingly she is not looking at it at all, as if it had nothing to do with her. Was someone else there pouring the water or what????
Nathalie, I was hoping no one would ask that question! Simply because I just don't know the answer. I 'think' it's not water but the handle of a basket.
ReplyDeleteJilly, I had surgery 2 wks ago and I was unable to keep up with your daily photo. I do have to say - I missed not being able to view it daily. I became aware of your site in Jan 2008. I am staying in Menton for 3 wonderful days in Sept, before heading to Italy. I knew nothing of Menton before I booked my stay. Finding your site is a treasure. I can't tell you how excited I am now to visit. I am very much in anticipation.
