Theme Day: Street Mural or Graffiti

Not Banksy, but I found no street murals in Menton. This is part of the revered French poet, Paul Valéry's famous poem 'Le Cimetière Marin' (The Graveyard by the Sea) and it's on a wall in the beautiful cemetery above the Old Town of Menton. You can read the poem in both French and in its English translation by C. Day Lewis. Just click on the link above.

"The quiet roof where dove-sails saunter by,
Between the pines, the tombs..."

  5. Sally, I found no street murals. Not suprised in the beautiful old town but I thought I might find something in the new part. I found a couple of squiggles of graffiti but not worth photographing. So this is a take on a Theme really but it is on a wall and poetry is art.

  6. "La mer, la mer, toujours recommencée..."
"Le vent se lève, il faut tenter de vivre..."
Very nice "trouvaille", Jilly, thank you.

  8. You certainly used poetic licence for this theme; well done. I like it.

  9. The words paint a picture so I think Menton does have a street mural.

  10. No youth in Menton, no graffiti? The riviera has often been accused of being the dying place of the rich - no poor youth around to spoil the picture?

Count your blessings Jilly, and thanks for reminding us of this magnificent poem - I won't complain!

Avignon is not in the list (still having trouble registering with CDP) but nevertheless participating in the theme day. I hope you come and visit.

  12. "O my breast, drink in the wind's reviving!
A freshness, exhalation of the sea,
    Restores my soul . . . Salt-breathing potency!
Let's run at the waves and be hurled back to living!"
That's why I live by the "sea" ;-)

    Great post, Jilly!

  18. You can be happy in your town. Most graffiti in big towns are terrible. Instead you have that beautiful writing on the wall.

  40. How wonderful that there is no graffiti - my suspicion was confirmed by this theme day. You can tell what region you are in by the way their streets look.

Interesting comment you've made about the opera and ballet? Is that to say that today they do not perform for the pleasure of the audience?

Amazing that the building was originally built as a casino!! It must have always been good business. The owner must have known that soon he would recover the costs from the money people will leave there.

Do any of you gamble? I buy a weekly lottery - because if you don't buy a ticket you can't expect to win - but it is only ONE ticket.
