We are walking down from the Château in the village of Gorbio. As you can see new steps have been built on the left. In a medieval village, restoration is always needed. Occasionally you see work that is far too modern and stands out like the proverbial sore thumb. In this case, the steps appear to be made of stone and hopefully will soon weather down and blend in with the centuries old walls.
They look very steep.
ReplyDeleteI like wandering around these little inner streets!
ReplyDeleteI love the different textures, lines and angles in this photo!
ReplyDeleteNice photo. Looking through the arch really draws you into the picture.
ReplyDeleteI am a stair fanatic, I don't know why. Maybe they represent going somewhere, up or down, movement, since I'm always doing something and cant sit still for long!
ReplyDeleteBut this is a great shot, if I were standing there I'd be telling everyone around me, "shhh! Look at this!"
Totally agree wtih your sentiments on the weathering. Still a lovely photo. Light through archways a favourite subject of mine. Samshing.
ReplyDeleteLe village de Gorbio à l'air charmant. J'aime ces ruelles...
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a facinating place. Are tours conducted here? Are their regular residents?
ReplyDeleteGorbio is our favourite village and it is great to see it being restored. A lovely photo. Freda
ReplyDeleteLove this photo! As soon as it came up I couldn't wait to scroll down to see the rest. It must be something having to climb up such a steep stairway w/bags.
ReplyDeleteVery true. But glad that restoration were done on the village to preserve the unique and beautiful houses so that history can be pass down.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your blog, Menton is a very romantic city. In the USA new construction on historic buildings must be sympathetic to the original but not appear "original" as this would be "faux" architecture.
ReplyDeleteJilly, that is a very pretty view. I'm glad that they are trying to keep up with the restoration, even if it does seem a bit new. I'll bet that it will weather nicely.
ReplyDeleteYes, the new steps blend in quite nicely with the original architecture. But you can see it's new because of the lack of discolorization. Nonetheless, the owner did well.
ReplyDeleteMore so than I like to admit. :-)
ReplyDeleteSometimes you'll see my hands flailling all over the place like I'm being hysterical. But I was merely trying to make a point. :-)
This is beautiful Jilly. Must put Gorbio on the list of places to visit.
ReplyDeleteCan I get a job as a stone mason in Gorbio?
ReplyDeleteI would be happy for the rest of my life.
Rue Longe ou Rue Court, Il n'importe pas ce qui.
I wondered how Europe keeps its centuries' old building from falling down. Repair, repair, repair! Thank goodness they do that.
