Brocante - The Photograph

She walks in beauty like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies.
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to the tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

- Lord Bryon

  1. ...is this Brocante going to develop? It's looking great so far. The Boar's Head is for me.

    But...I wonder how the photo came up for sale. It's aomthing you would keep unless the family had finally withered away.

  2. I was wondering the same thing as Chuckeroon. I wonder who she was.

    Jilly, thank you for setting your page lengths to display a limited number of posts at a time. It makes seeing your large, beautiful images a pleasure to explore without waiting ages for the page to fill. It's very considerate of you.

  3. j'aime bien découvrir des vieilles cartes postes, des vieilles photos. toujours surprenant les gens qui vendent des photos de leurs passés, mais cela fait une très belle découverte. merci pour le poème

  4. The reflection on the photo almost makes it look as though we are peering into a magic mirror!

    I am sorry to think that today no-one knows who the girl in the portrait is. It's like dying a second time, when everyone has forgotten you...

    I can only think like Chuckeroon that the family must have withered away...

  7. What a shame she didn't have the opportunity to have Byron tell her this in person.
    Such beauty in the language and the one he wrote it for as well.
    I wonder if people have beauty in the night that gaudy day denies?
    Beauty, - in the eyes of the beholding poet.
