Summertime in Menton - Love on the beach

Remember that scene on the beach in From Here to Eternity? Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. It was made in 1953 and won 8 Oscars and yes, you'd need to be of 'un certain age' to remember. In the film, the beach was sand and the lovers had the sea lapping over them. The scene was considered somewhat risqué at the time. Click on the link to see what I'm talking about.

Nowadays, cast your eye over any Menton beach and you'll soon find a pair of young lovers - oblivious to those around them. This was taken the same day as the two previous photographs - as dusk started to fall.

They are still in nursery school aren't they?

Wow. They do seem too young for this to me.

  4. Zsolt72, this is a recent photo, and she does indeed have a big bikini by today's standards!

This is an excellent shot, very reminiscent of the film. Also, I believe in the spoof film "Airplane" there was a scene where two lovers were kissing like this on the beach, a big wave, crashed over them, leaving them covered with seaweed!

  7. What a brilliant shot.
Burt Lancaster never had it this good !
And you'll notice the language of fingers and toes.
    Sheer poetry; magnifique !!

Of course it was sand! If I recall correctly it was an Australian beach. When I saw your photo my first reaction was "Must be b...y uncomfortable". I am way old for young love! I note, however, that one of them came prepared with a cushion for his elbows. Take about taking precautions!!

  10. I can't resist renaming it "Love on the Rocks!" You know you are young and in love when a rocky beach doesn't stand in the way. Great photo.

  11. Virginia hit the nail on the head: love on the rocks. And I'm either getting so old that everyone is looking like babies or it is true these two are about 12 years old!

  13. Looks a bit painful for the two of them, no matter how in love they are. I think I'd have bought an air bed!

  14. Nice picture! Black and white makes the confusion about time.
This kind of scenes is so useful that I'm not shocked. Watching teenagers of their age smoking, that's what draws my attention, and schocks me.

  15. This is beautiful Jilly and in Black and White of course! You're teasing us now. They do look like babies to me too but that's the age when they could be lying on nails and it wouldn't matter. Lovely!

  16. Some things never get old, neither great movies nor great sex, er, I mean love.

  17. Great photo, Jilly...I love the black and white and the definition is so good I can count their toes!
I have to agree they look like babies, far too young for all that romance business..is that my age showing?

  18. Hee-hee! I have to admit, I'm with Abraham on this one. Boys especially look like little kids until they're in their mid-twenties or so. And she must be young if she's not feeling those rocks too much.

Hey! Where's her other leg? 8^D

Loved that you used black and white. Great comparison to the FHTE flick.

  21. That movie scene was filmed at a beach near the Halona Blowhole Lookout - but now, they closed off that parking lot for repairs! I guess i could photograph that to post - thanks for the idea! =D

I always wonder what should I photograph!
I like how you did the black and white on this - very appropriate. My mom watched that movie all the time!

  22. Well Jilly, you're defintely the lover's official photographer. I remember that wonderful photo you in took in Torino about those lovers, then this one that take me back when I was 17 on Broadstairs' beach. A century ago. Grazie !

  23. That's what a Leica lens is for isn't it, Jilly. Wonderful tones. Such sharp definition. Oh, and those little wrinkles on his heel.

    ;-)!

    'roony.

  24. This picture is particularly potent because it is in black and white, nice choice, Jilly. And it brings back all the tingles and excitement of summers in the south of France. A very. Very. Very, long time ago. Thanks for the memories!
