A Menton Christmas - the Postman

The local postman on Rue Longue in the Old Town of Menton. At last, after months and months of work, most of the street is paved - but still much work to do.

The lady is getting money from her purse - perhaps a Christmas tip but unlikely as normally the postmen and women come around with calenders, enabling us to buy one and at the same time, give as much or as little as we wish. My post lady, Crystelle is fabulous. She'll phone me from her portable to check if I'm in for a parcel and then she'll lug it down the track. How's that for good service!

Note the keys in the postman's hand. Come back tomorrow to see where he uses them.

  1. Oh, this is so touching, a real piece of the past in present. Our mailman here is pretty good, too. He does his best to add a personal touch; will deliver parcels to my neighbor for me to pick up, etc.

  2. Note the postie's footwear! How sensible is that!!

  3. Thank God for good mail service! I yearn, however, for less junk mail and more personal mail. Altho I love the internet, it certainly has taken a toll on the kind of mail I used to get; letter writing I fear is slowly becoming a lost art...but I digress! I love the shoes on the couple; certainly is generational, isn't it?

  4. Charming. There is personal warmth in the interaction here. I'm with Kate - perhaps 75% of our mail is advertising or fundraising solicitations. It goes straight into the trash, a big waste of paper.

  9. Our postman is so bogged down with junk mail that he has to drive from mailbox to mailbox. It would be too heavy to carry.

  10. We used to get service like that back when I was a kid. I remember my Grandma giving the postman a gift for Christmas and fruit cake for Thanksgiving (probably got thrown away).

  11. Top marks on this little postman series.....interesting that the comments all reflect the same thing; wherever we are in our Western World the old postal service is deeply loved but fast dying. These arguments are not restricted to Britain or Australia....post services are changing and declining everywhere. Like street payphones.....we'll miss them when they are gone.

  12. I love your old town pics. A wonderful window in a world I don't know. Maybe I'll visit one day though. You make it quite enticing.
