A Surfer in Menton!
As I was parking the car I noticed this guy out at sea, waiting for a wave. Within a few seconds, he was up on the board, surfing beautifully towards the beach. I grabbed my camera but wasn't in time for the shot - just this as he walked up the beach.
It's rare to have weather like this - normally the Mediterranean is pretty calm. The surfer told me the day before there had been a swell of two metres but that on this day it wasn't quite so good. When the weather is right, he told me he normally surfs at Menton or along the coast at Villefranche, which is just before Nice.
avec ce temps, il doit y avoir de très belles vagues, mais il est courageux
ReplyDeleteI gotta tell my husband (who grew up surfing around here) about this. Great "catch" of the waves :) in the 2nd photo.
ReplyDeleteHey! Surf's up, and so is the February theme poll! I'm used to seeing the Pacific Ocean looking like this, and have to remind myself that the Mediterranean is more pacific than the ocean.
ReplyDeleteOh, this reminds me of my high school years in California in the sixties....and all the surfing jargon; surf's up, hang ten, shoot the tube, wipe out...and I didn't even surf.
ReplyDeleteI'm from San Diego so surfing was big there. In high school, all the surfers would roll in to school late or miss the day because of good waves they couldn't miss. Surf reports on the radio letting us know....brings back alot of memories that I just took for granted as the way things were!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors in your photo! Hope that guy had a fun time out there, getting the beach all to himself!
This looks a little chilly!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful ocean pic.
ReplyDeleteI like the contrast of the red with the beautiful blue sea.
ReplyDeleteNice depth of field here, J. I'm liking the texture of the water and the way the important things are detailed up to the breakwater which holds it all together. The background gives us a nice "Menton" context and I'm happy that it's got some definition in it rather than being just a distant blurr. Oh, and the position of the man.....just about to walk out of the picture! Yes, this composition does it for me.
ReplyDeleteBut then Menton DP is always good fun...so..
Oh let me just ditto CHucheroon's expert commentary. Take a bow! I would like to add that the chap was nice enough to have that fine bright red surfboard that pops right off the page in that sea of blue. Maybe didn't miss the shot, but rather got the b est one.

Wow - what wild weather. When this happens at home in Australia the surfers come for miles to catch the big ones.
ReplyDeleteThe red board is a glorious contrast - he certainly did you a favour there!!!
I can't believe this...surfers in Menton! How handy you were there. Love the photo of course but that orange board really does it for me.
ReplyDeleteUmmm I meant RED board, of course.
