A sunny day in les Jardins Biovès, 20 chess boards and you have 'Chess à la Carte.' An opportunity for anyone, young or old, experienced in playing Chess or not, to participate in an informal Chess tournament.
“You sit at the board and suddenly your heart leaps. Your hand trembles to pick up the piece and move it. But what Chess teaches you is that you
must sit there calmly and think about whether it’s really a good idea
and whether there are other better ideas”
-Stanley Kubrick

The expression of concentration on the man in the top photo really makes the photo. I am partial to portraits. Is Dominoes as popular there as chess??
ReplyDeleteKate, I've never seen anyone playing dominoes in Menton - or anywhere around here but then perhaps I've not noticed. I think this 'chess' day was to encourage people. I got the impression there is a small group who are enthusiasts and they'd like to increase numbers.
ReplyDeleteYou are up late! I'm up early!
Very nice portraits. I also like the light and the shadow playing together.
ReplyDeleteVery good images of people and places. You got, and showed us, the atmosphere...
ReplyDeleteHere people, men mostly, love to play chess. Usually you find them in parks playing on fixed stone tables with little boards on them, or else improvising a game like these taxi drivers here
ReplyDeleteHurray! I managed to insert my first link!!
ReplyDeleteGreat chess shots today Jilly!
ReplyDeleteV
These are splendid, splendid, splendid, particularly the last with the chess players (in their wonderful variety of attire and manner) and the context of the beautiful backdrop of the town.
ReplyDeleteThat first one is wonderful, it just 'captures' the mood and the temps! Ha!
ReplyDeleteI used to love to play chess like this but gave it up when after teaching my son how to play the game, and when he beat me, not once, but several times, I retired the game board and the pieces.
ReplyDeleteBing-it.
Abe, you made me laugh. You don't like to lose, do you?
ReplyDeleteGreat post Jilly, what a gorgeous idea, this open chess contest. It must be great for socialising with like-minded people and it keeps everyone's mind ticking, doesn't it?
