Brattcat, such beautiful phrasing I want to steal it. I tend to like unrestored ruins the best. This whole walk is lovely.
Maybe the passing pilgrim can mentally insert someone of her own choosing in the empty shrine ...

Most of the shrines were restored during the 20th century... but obviously some weren't.
