Theme Day: Passageway in the Serre de la Madone

The Serre de la Madone is one of Menton's most famous gardens. Created by Lawrence Johnston, an American who owned the famous Hidcote Garden in England, he needed a warmer climate for the sub-tropical plants he collected. His story is fascinating and so is the garden and we will be covering it on Menton Daily Photo soon.

This photo shows a passageway fairly near the entrance to the gardens on the Route de Gorbio.

  1. Not only is it lovely in its own right, but the warm ochre color makes me feel like we've left winter behind. But.......I just glanced out my office window. It's still here!

  7. This garden looks well seasoned and I definitely want to follow the path to the rest of the garden. Nice light and capture.

  8. The colours of the pillars/posts and the vines complement one another. It probably is very beautiful in the summer when the other parts of the garden are in bloom.

  12. As VJ says, the ochre is a lovely shade. WHat I particularly like though, is the very strong lines of the pillars contrasted with the weaker edges of the pathway, and then that little kink on the left of the pathway. Funny how the human eye is attracted to that. I look forward to the series on the garden.

  21. As tempting as it would be to discover what's at the end of this lovely passageway, I find myself wanting to just sit there and soak in the warmth! Can you tell we're ready for spring here in the Midwest?

  29. How fun that with the vivid color it is like we have not left the Fête at all to come to this garden. The light and the pathway with shadows reminds me of Sothern California missions a little. That same climate, and a pretty outdoor passageway. You fooled in in that I thought for sure you would feature an in-town one :-).

  30. Ah, what a wonderful summery feel to this little passageway. Wish I was there right now with a small plate of cheese and glass of wine, just sitting on a bench contemplating the scene.

  31. This yellow is right in line with your citrus posts which are fantastical, Jilly. I remember eating blood oranges when we lived near Nice. They were so good.

  32. I agree, the yellow and bright light are perfect for your current series. I know exactly where you took this and you did an excellent job in capturing the passageway. My picture was taken on a hazy fall day and a plant obscures part of the door way. Everything is mutted. I love how you took this picture with the bright sunlight and the open door - so inviting.

I am looking forward to seeing more of the garden. We are curious to see it in a different season.
