My grand-father used to hold his cigarettes in this manner. He learned to do that in the trenches when the red light of a burning cigarette made you a perfect target. Hiding it inside your had was a survival gesture.
We work better after a break!

It looks like he works in comfortable shoes; a must when one works on his feet all day.
