What happened to the sunny French Riviera?

A break in the rain the other day... since then it's been endless. Nice-Matin reports that December was the coldest in 40 years with sunshine of only 98 hours, which is near the lowest threshold of 80 hours, recorded in 1996 - the normal is 140 hours. Since records started 62 years ago, two have been close to being beaten. There were also more days with rain than normal. The Cote d'Azur is used to a mild and dry winter climate - what happened to the sunny south of France?

~~~~~
Une éclaircie, l'autre jour ... Depuis lors, il a plu sans arrêt. Nice-Matin rapporte que Décembre a été le plus froid depuis 40 ans, avec un ensoleillement (98h) proche du seuil le plus bas (80 H) relevé en 1996 alors que la normale est de 140h. Deux records établis en 62 ans de mesures ont failli être battus. Les jours pluie ont également été plus nombreux. En hiver, la Côte d'Azur a généralement à climat doux et relativement sec. Que se passe-t-il dans le sud ensoleillé de la France?
  2. But I like your photo!!
    There's still a lot of blue!!
    We have seen the sun only ONCE (!!!) within the past 5 - 6 weeks and that was the day before yesterday when I took the photo while walking in the snow.
  6. Well, it is 'climate change' of which global warming is a part.
    This is a wonderful image, Jilly. Very atmospheric.
  9. A brooding sky with a very good "master" and dog. Despite the rain, it's good to get out with man's best friend for a stroll. Like the scene very much.
  10. In Southern California, it is always sunny so the rain is always welcome, even if it last 5 days in a row and the temperatures are down. It is winter after all!
  11. This weather is simply a tease to make you appreciate your sunny weather and not take it for granted.
    In Phoenix, the sun shines 90% of the daylight hours. This year for the holidays the weather was extremely cold. My two sons talked about how they would like to go to Times Square on year for New Year's, but then they said it would be too cold, then they checked their iPhones and found that it was colder on New Year's Eve in Phoenix than it was in New York.
  12. Stop gloating, Chuckeroon! We can't all go to Muscat!
    thanks everyone for much appreciated comments. I do realise that compared to other places in the world, this is warm. Also I think of those poor folk in Queensland. Just it's such a change from the norm here and everyone is doing into a depression...! pathetic I know.
  15. It is a beautiful photo, Jilly. And while sun is shining through my window, the temperatue is 13 degrees (F). That is -11 Celsius. And there is a dusting of snow on the ground. I would gladly settle for a cloudy beach in Menton. But I love Menton in any weather! Hope the sun shines on you soon.
  18. So sad for the weather, last year between Christmas and New Year I biked every day between Monaco and Ventimiglia, beautiful weather and a few years ago I remember we ate lunch on a terrace on January 3rd. I hope the sun makes a big return.
