This is an old house - a very old house - in
Place Saint Michel in Sospel. Look at the cobblestones inside the house - and look at that old door and look at the carved stone lintel. All wonders! How many children in how many centuries have walked on those stones, climbed those stairs, lived in this house?

Very special indeed.
ReplyDeleteIHS on the lintel, maybe it is also a place much prayed in?
But what? it stands empty now?!
That symbol is on the lintel is on many if not most, medieval houses in this region. I believe it's the symbol for Jesus Christ.
ReplyDeleteSo far as I could see this house is indeed lived in. There was a name on the door - another time, I'll investigate further. Quite probably, inside there are apartments but the doorway and entrance cannot be changed for historic reasons - thank goodness.
I can only imagine the people that have passed through this doorway and walked on the cobblestones Jilly. Fascinating indeed.
ReplyDeleteI always wonder who lived in these places so long ago...and what stories this doorway and passage could tell.
ReplyDeleteIt's always amazing to see such ancient things in daily life at present! Living history! Here they surely would have been exchanged a long long time ago..
ReplyDeleteWhat treasures they still have in this area! Yes, the doorway must have millions of stories to tell!
I never noticed the "IHS". So if I should see it one day somewhere I know... Is it always accompanied by a bird and the other symbol on the right side??

Yes, Wiki says "the IHS christogram (a monogram of the Holy Name), derived from the Greek word IHSOUS (ΙΗΣΟΥΣ) for Jesus, or referring to Iesus Hominum Salvator, Jesus savior of mankind) representing the Holy Name."
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine living in a house like this? Wonderful in some ways, but a hard life in others. I love the way the cobbles are worn and have a sheen on them.
