This is Fulvia, a Penitent from Dolceacqua. She belongs to the
Confraternita di S. Sebastiano Martire in Dolceacqua in Liguria - a
little way across the border in Italy. Night is falling and you can just
see two snail shells filled with olive oil and wicks, glowing in the
coming darkness. Not long now and the magic will start ...~~~~~

Hard to know if this is religious adoration or social cohesion. Fulvia looks like a devotee. I love all the small 'habits' that have developed over the years, like the oil in snail shells. And petals strewn in the shape of a heart ...
ReplyDeleteThe Penitents do an enormous amount of work for the old and the poor of their villages, Julie. Along with the religious ceremonies they are good kind people. So you are right on both counts.
