Mortola Superiore - Our Lady of the Open Skies

Around 1600, the inhabitants of the tiny villages scattered on the steep hillsides above the sea, built a small chapel at Mortola Superiore and named it 'Our Lady of the Open Skies.' So-named because of the windy location on which it was built.  In 1873 a church was built but this was half destroyed by bombs during the Second World War. After the war, it was rebuilt by the community and in 1963 appointed as a parish church and has become a meeting plac for the community ever since.

I didn't go inside the church but there is a votive chapel so I will go back and photograph it. Votive chapels are always so beautiful and so moving.

Vers 1600, les habitants des petits villages éparpillés sur les pentes raides au-dessus de la mer, construisirent une petite chapelle à La Mortola Supérieure et la nommèrent  «Notre-Dame du Grand Air». Ainsi nommée en raison de l'endroit venteux sur lequel elle était  construite. En 1873, une église fut construite, mais elle fut à moitié détruite par les bombes durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Après la guerre, elle fut reconstruite par la communauté. En 1963, elle devint une église paroissiale et depuis, c'est un lieu de rencontre pour la communauté.

Je ne suis pas rentrée à l'intérieur de l'église, mais il s'y trouve une chapelle votive et j'y retournerai pour la photographier. Les chapelles votives sont toujours si belles et si émouvantes.
