Both look fab Jilly but I like the uncropped version today better, love seeing the whole street scene and those gorgeous lamps.
In this case, cropping it brought focus to the child.

I'm on the side of the crop too. In the larger view I didn't even notice the child! The cropped photo, as Karen USA and FotoMarg said, tells a story.
The general photo is a standard (but nice) street scene. No particular focus, nothing much happening. The cropped one tells a story and we're right in there with the family. I vote for the crop too! So you see, your first move was right!
