Vaclav is an artist who takes his holidays in Gorbio. He adores the village and so was invited to be part of the Collectif Artistes du Village. His painting of a window with wine bottles is perfectly hung on this wall, don't you think?

Collectif Artistes du Village - Jacqueline by Michel Tucow

Today we are looking at Michel Tucow's painting of Jacqueline. Jacqueline keeps sheep and ducks, grows fruit and vegetables and has wonderful fresh eggs. Michel is a violinist and also a fabulous cook and he lives on the other side of the square to his painting.

And above the painting, Frederique is day dreaming. Frederique runs the excellent village gift shop.

Aujourd'hui, nous admirons la représentation de Jacqueline par  Michel Tucou. Jacqueline élève des moutons et des canards, cultive des fruits et des légumes et vend  d'excellents œufs frais. Michel est un violoniste et aussi un bon cuisinier. Il habite sur la place, en face de sa peinture exposée.

Et au dessus de la peinture, Frédérique est dans ses rêveries.  Frédérique tient l'excellente boutique de souvenirs du village.

Patrick Varotto's Shopkeepers

There is a fascinating exhibition of photography at the Crédit Mutuel Bank opposite the Mairie in Menton at the moment.  Well known local photographer Patrick Varotto has photographed many local artisans at their workplace.  The shots are such fun, so original - sometimes with the help of Photoshop.  For instance, celebrated baker, Kevin le Meur, is seen shovelling his own head out of the bread oven!

The public are invited to vote for their favourite and the shop-keeper with the most votes gets to win a fabulous cruise for two.  Voting slips are available at every shop participating and at the bank. Exhibition continues until for another four weeks.

As always with Patrick's exhibitions there was a massive turn-out at last night's vernissage at the bank. Bravo Patrick!

En ce moment se tient une fascinante exposition  de  photographie à la Banque du Crédit Mutuel face de la mairie de Menton. Photographe local bien connu, Patrick Varotto a photographié de nombreux artisans locaux sur leur lieu de travail. Les photos sont tellement amusantes, tellement originales - parfois avec l'aide de Photoshop. Par exemple, le célèbre boulanger, Kevin le Meur, est représenté pelletant sa propre tête hors du four à pain!

Le public est invité à voter pour sa photo préférée et le commerçant qui obtiendra le plus de votes gagnera une très belle croisière pour deux. Les bulletins de vote sont disponibles dans  chaque magasin participant et à la banque. L' exposition qui a débuté le 24 avril se poursuivra encore quatre semaines.

Comme toujours pour les expositions de Patrick, le public était venu  très nombreux au vernissage de la nuit dernière à la banque. Bravo Patrick!

PhotoMenton: Olivier Remualdo and 'Sâdhus, the Holy Men of Hinduism'

Meet Olivier Remualdo, author/photographer who is, as you can see, a beautiful man inside and out - just look at those eyes.

He was at PhotoMenton during the second weekend to present his book 'Sâdhus, the Holy Men of Hinduism.' I'm so glad I bought a copy.

The photographs of these holy men, the Sâdhus, in this book are so extraordinary - and so is Olivier's writing as we read of his encounters with them. The book, by the way, is in French and in English.

There's so much to write about the Sâdhus and the time Olivier spent with them but really it's easier if you take a look at this page SADHUS which will give you all the information you need and where you can buy the book.

Olivier has had numerous exhibitions and won many awards including the prestigious Lucien Clergue Prize in 2011.

Voici Olivier Remualdo, auteur/photographe qui est, comme vous pouvez le voir, un bel homme à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur - il suffit de regarder ses yeux.

Il était à PhotoMenton au cours du deuxième week-end pour présenter son livre « , Sâdhus, Les Homme Saints de l'Hindouisme.' Je suis tellement contente d'en avoir acheté un exemplaire.

Dans ce livre, les photographies de ces saints hommes, les sadhus, sont absolument extraordinaires ainsi que les textes d'Olivier relatant ses rencontres avec eux. Le livre, en passant, est en français et en anglais.

Il y a tant de choses à écrire sur les sadhus et sur le temps passé par Olivier avec eux qu'il est vraiment plus facile si vous jetiez un oeil sur cette page SADHUS laquelle vous donnera toutes les informations dont vous avez besoin et l'endroit où vous pouvez acheter le livre.

Olivier a fait de nombreuses expositions et il  a remporté de nombreux prix, dont le prestigieux Prix Lucien Clergue en 2011.

PhotoMenton: Anamorphic Art of Claude Ingargiola

Isn't this fascinating! It's called anamorphic art and is the work of photographer, Claude Ingargiola. As you walk past the images they move from right to left or vice versa. Everyone is fascinated including this group of boys.

PhotoMenton: Tim Aspert

There are around 3000 visitors to PhotoMenton each November and each one is given a voting slip on which they write the number of their preferred photographer. Not an easy decision with 110 photographers exhibiting. At the end of the 10 days the votes are counted and one proud photographer will win the 'Prix du Public.'

Meet Tim Aspert, who was the winner of the award in 2011 (PhotoMenton was cancelled in 2012 because the roof of the Palais de l'Europe fell in!) Take a look at Tim's website and his beautiful vibrant photography full of movement and emotion. His photographs, always in black and white, tell stories that make you think.

'Artists of the Village' - Michel Isnard

How fabulously this beautiful painting sits in its milieu. From the moment, I photographed all the art in the village, and I love so many, this was my favourite. To learn that is was painted by the Mayor of Gorbio, Michel Isnard, is no surprise as he is an artist of renown. I spoke with him yesterday and he explained that this painting is autobiographical and speaks of the time over 40 years ago when he moved to the village of Gorbio and was, at that time, a stranger.

I adore it!

Comment fabuleusement cette belle peinture se trouve dans son milieu.   Depuis le moment où j'ai pris les photos de tous les tableaux dans le village,  je l'aime tellement, c'est mon préféré. Et apprendre qu'il a été peint par le maire de Gorbio, Michel Isnard, ne fut pas une surprise car c'est un artiste de renom. J'ai parlé avec lui hier et il m'a expliqué que cette peinture est autobiographique et parle du temps, il y a plus de 40 ans de cela, où il a emménagé dans le village de Gorbio et était, à ce moment-là, un étranger.

Je l'adore !

'Artists of the Village' - the Vernissage and Geraldine

We are at the vernissage of the 'Artists of the Village' - Geraldine Rebuffatti is the hard-working organiser of this event and here she is singing a funny song to the artists, village dignitaries and public who have gathered in the square by the Chateau.

In the other photos, you see Geraldine's painting which hangs on a wall opposite the Chapelle de Gubernatis near the entrance to the old village.

Nous sommes au vernissage des « Artistes du Village " - Géraldine Rebuffatti est l'organisatrice assidue de cet événement et ici elle chante une chanson drôle, qui a été très appréciée, par les artistes, les personnalités  du village et le  public, tous rassemblés sur la place du Château.    

Sur les autres photos, vous voyez l'oeuvre de Géraldine accrochée sur un mur en face de la Chapelle de Gubernatis près de l'entrée du vieux village. 

'Artists of the Village' - Marcelle et Michele

Another piece of art that fits so beautifully into its environment.  No surprise that artists choose to paint the beauty around them.  This painting is by Marcelle Vial.

The blue painting above the archway is by Michele Kleijnen.  You can see this more clearly by clicking on the photo below to enlarge.

'Artists of the Village' - Alain Ducret's Circles

Some installations required a pulley and a certain amount of brute force. 

I don't know the name of the artwork but isn't it great fun! At first you see wheels and then suddenly you notice a dog collar and is that a grill for the barbecue? ... and so on and so on.  The artist is Alain Ducret.

Certaines installations ont besoin d' une poulie et d' une certaine quantité de force brute. 

Je ne connais pas le nom de l'oeuvre, mais n'est-ce pas très amusant! Au début, vous voyez des roues et puis soudain, vous remarquez un collier de chien et n'est-ce pas un gril de barbecue? ... et ainsi de suite, et ainsi de suite. L'artiste est Alain Ducret.

'Artists of the Village' - Escargot Luminaire (Christine Mouteaud)

Each year there is an exhibition in the medieval village of Gorbio called 'Artists of the Village' which is normally held in the Presbytery.  This year, because the Presbytery is taken up with the wonderful exhibition of young Indian artists (also in the Chateau), the village artists decided to display their work on the walls of the village itself and it's absolutely wonderful! 

Each work of art seems to hang perfectly in its place.  Here is a painting called 'Escargot Luminaire' (Snail Light) by Christine Mouteaud which refers of course, to the wonderful Fetes des Limaces, held in the village in June.

Chaque année,  dans le village médiéval de Gorbio, a lieu une exposition appelée « Artistes du Village », qui se tient normalement dans le presbytère . Cette année, parce que le presbytère est occupé par la merveilleuse exposition de jeunes artistes indiens ( également dans le château ), les artistes ont décidé de présenter leur travail sur les murs même du village  et c'est absolument merveilleux!

Chaque œuvre d'art semble se trouver parfaitement à sa place. Voici un tableau intitulé « Escargot Luminaire » par Christine Mouteaud qui se réfère bien sûr, à la merveilleuse Fête des Limaces, qui s'est déroulée dans le village en Juin.

Gorbio - 'The Year of India' - the Tabla and the Santoor

Our last day at the Vernissage/Show for the opening of 'The Year in India' and today we meet the musicians. The music was utterly beautiful.  Sometimes Nihar and Domenco  played alone and sometimes they played for Jessie, the beautiful dancer we met the other day. (see smallest photo)

In the main photo is Nihar Mehta who plays the Tabla. The tabla is a membranophone percussion instrument (similar to bongos), used in Hindustani classical music and in popular and devotional music of the Indian subcontinent. The instrument consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres. The term tabla is derived from an Arabic word, tabl, which simply means "drum."

Playing technique involves extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds, reflected in the mnemonic syllables.  The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure or in a sliding motion on the larger drum so that the pitch is changed during the sound's decay.

Domenico Caputo  plays the Santoor.  The Kashmiri santoor is an ancient string musical instrument native to Jammu and Kashmir, with origins in Persia. A primitive ancestor of this type of instruments was invented in Mesopotamia (1600-911 BC).

The santoor is a trapezoid-shaped hammered dulcimer often made of walnut, with seventy two strings. The special-shaped mallets  are lightweight and are held between the index and middle fingers. A typical santoor has two sets of bridges, providing a range of three octaves.

The Indian santoor is more rectangular and can have more strings than the Persian counterpart, which generally has 72 strings.

Notre dernier jour au Vernissage / Spectacle pour l'ouverture de " L'Année de l'Inde » et aujourd'hui nous rencontrons les musiciens. La musique était absolument magnifique. Parfois Nihar et Domenico jouaient seuls et parfois ils accompagnaient Jessie, la belle danseuse que nous avons rencontrée l'autre jour. (voir petite photo)

Sur la photo principale, c'est Nihar Mehta qui joue du tabla. Gorbio - 'The Year of India' - Alexis Kersey

The Tour Lascaris and the presbytery in Gorbio village is the current home of a superb exhibition of 12 Indian artists.

On the beautiful lower level of the Tour Lascaris you can see the work of Anglo-Indian artist, Alexis Kersey. 

The vision and richness of this artist comes about because of the collision of the two cultures. Born in Mysore, India but raised and educated in the United Kingdom, Alexis Kersey brings a particular unique viewpoint to that of the colonial past and cultural heritage of the British in India.


His work features in many important collections throughout the world.

La Tour Lascaris et le presbytère du village de Gorbio sont actuellement les centres d'une superbe exposition de douze artistes indiens.

Sur le beau niveau inférieur de la Tour Lascaris vous pouvez voir lea oeuvres de l'artiste anglo-indien, Alexis Kersey.

La vision et la richesse de cet artiste viennent du fait de la collision des deux cultures. Né à Mysore, en Inde, mais ayant grandi et étudié au Royaume-Uni, Alexis Kersey apporte un point de vue particulier unique à l'héritage du passé colonial et culturel des Britanniques, en Inde.

This evening! Vernissage of photography in the Tour Lascaris at Gorbio. Two photographers. Khaled Youssef will be exhibiting his new series of beautiful bubble photos and Jilly Bennett will be showing new black and white photos of life and love in Menton and Gorbio.

Do come along.  Everyone welcome. 18h. Friday, 7th June in the Chateau at the top of the village. Come an have an aperitif and a enjoy the show. Afterwards? Gil, the pizza chef at the Restaurant les Terrassess/Chez Paulo, makes great pizzas.

Palais Carnoles - Végétal Emoi

The gardens of the Palais Carnoles in Menton are famous for citrus fruit and also for the dozens of scuptures on display. And at the moment, there's an extra surprise, an exhibition of beautiful photography, called Végétal Emoi, by the Nice-based group Collectif Photon. Here you see photographs by Henri Limousin, Valerie Marco and Jacqueline Miot. The exhibition continues until the 27th October.

Les jardins du Palais Carnolès à Menton sont célèbres pour leurs agrumes et aussi pour les dizaines de sculptures qui y sont exposées. Et en ce moment, il y a une surprise supplémentaire, une belle exposition de  photographies appelée: Végétal Emoi, par le  groupe niçois Collectif Photon. Ici, vous voyez les photographies de Henri Limousin, Valérie Marco et Jacqueline Miot. L'exposition se poursuit jusqu'au 27 Octobre. 

Philippe Chiodi's Menton

Meet Philippe Chiodi, a Menton photographer and artist, whose work I adore. I love his eye for a photo. He is the first local photographer who inspired me to see things in Menton in a different way - and he continues to inspire me. His photo below won third prize in the photo competition 'Menton, Ville Onerique' - part of an exhibition at the gardens of the Serre de la Madone on the Route de Gorbio - and which continues until the 21st May.

'Onerique' seems to mean, in this instance, 'Menton, as in a dream' - as opposed to dreaming of Menton.

Voici Philippe Chiodi, un photographe et artiste de Menton, dont j'adore le travail. J'aime son regard sur la photographie. Il est le premier photographe local qui m'a donné envie de voir Menton d'une manière différente - et il continue de m'inspirer.  Sa photo ci-dessous a remporté le troisième prix du concours photo « Menton, Ville Onirique " faisant  partie d'une exposition dans les jardins de la Serre de la Madone sur la route de Gorbio - et qui se poursuit jusqu'au 21 mai.

Photography Exhibition in Gorbio

Not a photo by me today but one that includes me! - it's the programme for a  an exhibition of photography at the Tour Lascaris/Fondation Raza in Gorbio village from the 15 February to the 3rd March - 10h - 12h and from 14h to 16h. Closed on Tuesdays.

Khaled Youssef is a wonderfully creative Syrian-born photographer who lives in Nice. Khaled takes fabulous  photos of enormous bubbles, of beautiful reflections and of graffiti. It's an immense honour for me to be presenting my work at the same time. My photos will show what I adore about life here - the festivals, the ambiance, the food, the way of life in Menton and the medieval village of Gorbio. And most of all the people who live that life.

The vernissage is between 15h and 18h on Friday the 15th February (it will go on later than 6 p.m.) Everyone is welcome. Do mark your calendar and come along. And for anyone who wants to pass the evening in the village, the Restaurant Les Terrasses serves great pizzas.

Khaled Youssef est un photographe, merveilleusement  créatif, d'origine syrienne qui vit à Nice. 
Khaled prend de  magnifiques photos de bulles énormes, de beaux reflets et des graffitis. C'est un immense honneur pour moi de présenter mon travail en même temps que lui. Mes photos montrent ce que j'adore de la vie d' ici - les fêtes, l'ambiance, la cuisine, le mode de vie de Menton et du village médiéval de Gorbio. Et par dessus tout, les gens qui vivent cette vie.

Le vernissage aura lieu entre 15h et 18h le vendredi 15 Février (cela se poursuivra au delà de 18 heures) Tout le monde est  bienvenu. Notez la date dans vos agendas et venez. Et pour tous ceux qui voudraient passer leur soirée au village, le Restaurant Les Terrasses  sert de délicieuses pizzas.
