Hmmmmm ... not sure this lovely cat should be walking this altar in Gorbio's Eglise St. Barthelemy.

I wonder if he sleeps in the church?

Menton's Cat Show - the Egyptian Mau

Our last day at Menton's cat show. Here's a guy from Nice, wearing a fur around his neck ... in fact this is an Egyptian Mau cat. Egyptian Maus are a small to medium sized short-haired cat breed. Along with the Bahraini Dilmun Cat, they are one of the few naturally spotted breeds of domesticated cat. The spots of the Mau occur on both the coat and their skin underneath. It's also the fastest domesticated cat and has been clocked at over 58 kilometres per hour.

Notre dernier jour à l'exposition féline de Menton. Voici un gars de Nice, portant de la fourrure autour de son cou ... en fait c'est un chat Mau égyptien. Les Maus égyptiens sont de chats à poils courts de petite ou moyenne taille. Avec les chats Bahreïn Dilmun, ils font parties des quelques races de chats domestiques naturellement tachetés. Les taches des Maus apparaissent à la fois sur leur fourrure et  sur leur  peau au dessous. Ce sont aussi les  chats domestiques les plus rapides, on en a  chronométrés à plus de 58 kilomètres à l' heure.

Menton's Cat Show - the Ragdoll

This is a breed of cat called Ragdoll.  Apparently it really relaxes, even goes limp, when you pick it up although this one - the only Rag doll at the Menton Cat show -  didn't seem to do that.  Amazing blue eyes and colourpoint coat, don't you think? I gather they are a mix of Persian and Birman cat.

Voici un chat de la race Ragdoll. Apparemment, il se décontracte quand on le soulève  bien que celui-ci - le seul Ragdoll à l'exposition féline de Menton - ne semble pas faire cela. Étonnants yeux bleus et manteau colourpoint, n'est-ce pas? Je crois que c'est un mélange de chats Persan et  Birman. 

Menton's Cat Show - the Cheshire Cat?

Another cat who was entered at Menton's cat show over the weekend.  This is an Exotic Shorthair which his owner told me is a Persian cat, such as we saw yesterday, but with a short coat.

He's called Tyson and lives in Cannes but I think he looks like the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, don't you?

Un autre chat présenté à l' exposition féline de Menton au cours du week-end. Il s'agit d'un Exotic Shorthair dont la propriétaire m'a dit que c'est un chat persan,  comme celui d'hier, mais avec un manteau court.
Il s'appelle Tyson, vit à Cannes mais je trouve qu'il ressemble au chat de Cheshire d'Alice au pays des merveilles, n'est-ce pas?

Menton's Cat Show - the Persians

There was a cat show on in Menton yesterday at the Palais de l'Europe.  300 cats, 6 judges and lots of very proud cat people who were delighted to have their cat's photo taken.

So let's have a few days of cats and cat people for all you cat lovers out there. Here's a beautiful Persian cat - just look at those whiskers! - and in the smaller photo a  too adorable kitten.  They come from the Tarn.

Hier, une exposition féline se tenait au Palais de l'Europe à Menton . Trois cents chats ,six juges et beaucoup de gens très fiers et ravis de poser pour  une photo avec leur chat.

Aussi, pendant quelques jours, nous allons voir des chats et des propriétaires de chats pour tous les amoureux des chats parmi vous. Voici un beau chat persan - regardez  ses moustaches! - Et dans la petite photo un chaton si mignon. Il vient du Tarn.

Cat Food

It can't be bad being a village cat.  There is always someone around to feed them.  We are in San Biagio della Cima across the border in Italy today.

Il ne doit pas être désagréable d'être un chat de village. Il se trouve toujours quelqu'un pour les nourrir. Nous sommes à San Biagio della Cima de l'autre côté de la frontière, en Italie,  aujourd'hui.

Fat Cat

A fat cat in Gorbio who blends so beautifully into the wall. Look carefully though and you'll see he has cataracts so is doubtless blind or nearly blind. It always surprises me how well a dog or cat manages with little or even no sight.

He's obviously a well-loved cat, sunning himself outside his home.

Un gros chat de Gorbio qui s'harmonise si bien avec le mur. Regardez-le attentivement  et vous verrez qu'il a de la  cataractes si bien qu'il est sans doute aveugle ou presque aveugle. J'ai toujours été très surprise par un chien ou un chat qui se débrouille si bien  avec peu, voire pas de vue.

C'est évidemment un chat bien-aimé, se chauffant au soleil devant son domicile.

Fête des Limaces - the Reposoirs and the Cats

The Penitents Blancs of Gorbio have installed two temporary altars in the village. The one you see in the main photo is under the ancient elm tree, planted in 1713. The second is at the top of the village, opposite the Tour Lascaris - as you can see the cats are having the best fun demolishing the beautiful arrangement. The third is in the Chaeau des Comtes de Malaussene, a beautiful old building normally closed but for special occasions the door to the chapel is opened.

The candles on these three altars will soon be lit.

Les Pénitents Blancs de Gorbio ont installé trois reposoirs dans le village. Celui que vous voyez sur la photo principale est sous l'orme ancien, planté en 1713. Le deuxième se trouve au sommet du village, en face de la Tour de Lascaris - et  comme vous pouvez voir, les chats prennent un malin plaisir à démolir son bel arrangement. Le troisième est dans le Château  des Comtes de Malaussène, un bel immeuble ancien habituellement fermé, mais dont la porte de la chapelle est ouverte  pour des occasions spéciales.

Les bougies de ces trois reposoirs seront bientôt allumées.

Sospel - the Cat

It's all about a cat today but with a background of the beautiful buildings in Place Saint-Michel - the same square where we saw the cathedral.


Aujourd'hui, il est sujet d'un chat mais sur fond des beaux édifices de la Place Saint-Michel - la même place sur laquelle on a vu la cathédrale.

Cat and Mouse...

This cat has been trained to weave in and out of the rungs of the ladder and to ignore the white mice sitting on the edge!

Hoop-la!

There's a lot of entertainment going on in the Jardin Bioves this Christmas - especially if you are a child - or a big one like me. You can ice-skate, visit Santa Claus, take a train ride, fall about in a giant bubble floating on water, ride a giant caterpillar and watch a display of performing animals.

This cat happily jumped through a hoop of fire for the treat he got the other side. All the animals were in beautiful condition and obviously have a great rapport with their owner/trainer, Jean-Luc. Each one performed for only a minute or two at the most. We'll meet more animals: cats, dogs, a goose, various exotic chickens, pigeons and white mice. There were also sheep and a goat for children to pet.

Pour ce Noël, beaucoup de divertissements sont proposés dans le Jardin Biovès - surtout si vous êtes un enfant - ou une personne de ma taille! Vous pouvez patiner, rencontrer le Père Noël, prendre un petit train, faire des culbutes dans une bulle géante flottant sur l'eau, monter sur une chenille géante et regarder un spectacle effectué par des animaux.

Ce chat a sauté joyeusement dans un cerceau de feu pour attraper la friandise qui l'attendait de l'autre côté. Tous les animaux étaient dans un état magnifique et bien évidemment avaient un bon rapport avec leur propriétaire / entraîneur, Jean-Luc. Chacun exécutait un numéro d' une ou deux minutes au plus. Nous verrons d'autres animaux: des chats, des chiens, une oie, différentes poules exotiques, des pigeons et des souris blanches. Les enfants peuvent aussi toucher et caresser des moutons et une chèvre.

Bordighera - a Corner for a Chat

Climb up a narrow streets that widens at the top before it continues off to the right. Here, you'll find a bench on either side and the end, two chairs, lavender growing out of the rocks, bougainvillea tumbling over the wall...and a cat.

Montez le long d'une des rues étroites qui s'élargit vers le haut avant de poursuivre vers la droite. Ici, vous trouverez un banc de chaque côté puis, deux chaises, de la lavande qui pousse dans la roche, des bougainvillées qui retombent sur un mur ... et un chat.

The Good Life

This lovely cat in Gorbio village has life worked out, don't you think? He's got his own viewing platform to watch the world go by - or ignore - according to his mood.

The Cat Show - Waving the Wand

All the exhibitors carry a wand to attract their cat's attention and hopefully make it look alert for the judge. In the main photo you see the judge waving one about, as she makes the decision as to which of these two cats should win the class. Neither seem remotely interested!

You'll note that exhibitors choose their wands to match their outfits - purple for the lady on the left and below, the lady with the concentrated expression - she is about to take her cat to the judge - has a wand with silver on the end, which matches the silver beading on her black dress.

The Cat Show - the Kitten

My new camera (blame the camera not the photographer!) focused on the bars rather than the kitten, so she's slightly out of focus but I couldn't resist showing her to you. How adorable is she?

Several people had kittens on show and most were for sale.

The smaller photograph shows one of the areas in the Palais de l'Europe where the cats are kept in cages and where the exhibitors prepare them for exhibition. Note how some people have decorated their cages with red curtains and blue and white frou-frou.

The Cat Show - Whiskers Revealed

Here's the cat we met yesterday. He's a Silver Exotic Shorthair (thanks Alistair). I couldn't resist him or her and can see I might get to like cats...

...actually I do like cats and used to have two when I lived in mid-Wales. They were called Marmalade and Custard and they made the move with me to a village in Kent, along with 1o Old English Sheepdogs, a newly-born litter of puppies, two goats and 15 Love Birds. Unfortunately, I lived on a difficult bend on the road in the village and sadly both cats ended up being killed by cars.
