There is a group of photographers and models (friends and family) in Menton that aims to re-create the Menton of the past - the 1920s.  The idea is the images should be in sepia to emphasise that feeling of time gone by.

La Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy - the Golden Apple

The Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy and the offering of the 'golden apple', is a tradition going back to medieval times when the noble knights brought their offerings to the church. The ceremony has kept its character as a religious symbol of the struggle between good and evil, the crucifix and the sword representing the two social orders. Later, it represented the giving of money to the poor of the village and always the largest possible apple was chosen. Nowadays it is studded with euros!

Here the adorable Winona carries the golden apple.

La Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy et l'offerte de la « pomme d'or » sont des  traditions qui remontent à l'époque médiévale, lorsque les nobles chevaliers apportaient leurs offrandes à l'église. La cérémonie a gardé son caractère, comme un symbole religieux de la lutte entre le bien et le mal, le crucifix et l'épée représentant les deux ordres sociaux. Plus tard, elle a représenté le don d'argent aux pauvres du village et chaque fois la plus grosse pomme disponible a été choisie. Aujourd'hui, elle est parsemée d'euros!

Today's is the Fete de la Saint Barthelemy in Gorbio.  This photo was taken two years ago at the end of the mass in the church, prior to the procession around the village.

Aujourd'hui, c'est la Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy à Gorbio. Cette photo a été prise il y a deux ans à la fin de la messe dans l'église, avant la procession autour du village.

Procession Saint Lazare

The medieval Chapel St. Lazare sits on  the outskirts of Gorbio village on the 'Herculean' Roman road.   St. Lazare, in the 11th and 12th centuries protected the village against leprosy.

Each year on the 2nd July there is a procession from the Church in the village to this tiny chapel.  Photo: 2012.

La chapelle médiévale Saint-Lazare se trouve à la périphérie de village Gorbio sur la route romaine «herculéenne». Saint-Lazare, dans les 11e et 12e siècles protégeait le village contre la lèpre.

This is the lady we saw standing outside the church in Bari yesterday.  Her plastic container has a photo of Jesus and another of Mary fixed inside.  Either she is selling these photos or perhaps she is simply begging for a few coins.

It seems to me that tradition is so important in our lives. It gives us a continuity in community, in family.

The Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy is very important to the villagers of Gorbio. The offering of the 'golden apple', is a tradition going back to medieval times when the noble knights brought their offerings to the church. The ceremony has kept its character as a religious symbol of the struggle between good and evil, the crucifix and the sword representing the two social orders. Later, it represented the giving of money to the poor of the village and always the largest possible apple was chosen. Nowadays it is studded with euros!

In this photo, Fabrice brandishes the sword (the golden apple has been removed) and faces the cross held by Pere Guglielmi. The mayors of Sainte-Agnes, Albert Filippe, and of Gorbio, Michel Isnard, are on the left.

Il me semble que  la tradition est très importante dans nos vies. Elle nous donne une continuité dans la communauté et en famille.

Nathan's Big Day

This adorable child is Nathan who was baptised last Sunday in the church of St.Barthélémy in Gorbio. You can see him in the smaller photo with his parents and elder brother. Everyone in the village and the valley knows his mother, Christelle - she is our always-smiling always-friendly post lady.

Cet adorable enfant c'est Nathan qui a été baptisé dimanche dernier dans l'Église St. Barthélémy à Gorbio. Vous pouvez le voir sur la plus petite photo avec ses parents et son frère aîné. Tout le monde dans le village et la vallée connaît sa mère, Christelle -c'est notre factrice, toujours souriante, toujours gentille.
