Cocteau's Lizard

In a few weeks Menton Daily Photo will be featuring Menton's new Jean Cocteau Museum, but today, because it's Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community, here's a glimpse of part of the courtyard which features Cocteau's famous lizard motif. And as you can see, it's taken on a life of its own as children love following the pattern created in the pebbles.

Cobbles created with pebbles like this are common in Menton - you find them, for instance, outside the Basilica.

Dans quelques semaines, Menton Daily Photo présentera le nouveau Musée Jean Cocteau de Menton, mais aujourd'hui, parce que c'est le jour Thème dans la communauté City Daily Photo, voici un aperçu d'une partie de la cour qui représente le célèbre motif du lézard du Cocteau. Et comme vous pouvez le voir, depuis qu'il a été inauguré en Novembre, il a sa vie propre comme les enfants qui suivent leur chemin balisé par des cailloux.

Des pavages créés avec des cailloux comme celui-ci sont communs à Menton - comme celui devant la basilique.

Electricity!

We're leaving the Fete du Citron just for one day only as it's Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community and this month's theme is 'electricity'.

I confess I'd forgotten to take a photo to fit the theme this month but here's a photo I took around Christmas. Take your pic - electricity in the trees or the electricity between the couple on the right!

Nous quittons la Fête du Citron juste pour une seule journée parce que c'est le Jour du Thème dans la communauté City Daily Photo et le thème de ce mois est 'l'électricité.'

Favourite Photo of 2011

It's the 1st of January and as is traditional in the City Daily Photo community, it's the day to show our favourite photo of the year. There were several I considered, but what I love to photograph most are people and life, so here is little Winona, fluffing her mother's skirt at the wedding of her aunt in the medieval village of Gorbio.

Thank you to everyone for your loyalty, for comments, for private emails, for your support and encouragement - all of which mean so much to me.

Wishing us all a 2012 that brings peace and perhaps a little common sense to our world.

C'est le 1er Janvier et comme il est de tradition dans la communauté City Daily Photo, c'est le moment de montrer notre photo préférée de l'année. Il y en avait plusieurs mais comme ce que j'aime le plus photographier ce sont les gens et la vie, alors voici la petite Winona qui soulève la jupe de sa maman, au mariage de sa tante dans le village médiéval de Gorbio.

Merci à tous pour votre fidélité , pour vos commentaires, vos emails privés, pour votre soutien et vos encouragements - cela est tellement important pour moi.

Souhaitons à tous une année 2012 qui apporte la paix et peut-être un peu de bon sens au monde.

PhotoMenton - the School Children

During the week, the exhibition was invaded by hundreds of school children from Menton and Roquebrune. The young were seated on the floor and the photos explained to them. The older students had been given tasks to find photographs that illustrated 10 different subjects
headings. They then had to photograph the photograph.

Durant la semaine, l'exposition a été envahie par des centaines d'écoliers de Menton et Roquebrune. Les jeunes étaient assis par terre et les photos leur étaient commentées. Les élèves plus âgés étaient chargés de trouver des photographies illustrant dix thèmes différents qu'ils devaient ensuite photographier.

Bordighera - Don't fall over the edge...

In a land where villages are built on many different levels - particularly the hill villages of France and Italy - fences, railings, walls - all are essential if you don't want to fall over the edge. Here we see one in Bordighera Alta in Italy.

Bussana Vecchia - Pan's Perspective

Sometimes, we just have to get things in perspective.

Think about it - we've all got problems, not enough money, we don't feel well, it's too hot, too cold, too much rain. Then - think about this satyr - stuck in a niche in a village destroyed by an earthquake in 1887. All he can do is play the pipes of Pan and wish he could get more comfortable.

Parfois , nous avons juste à mettre les choses en perspective.

Ainsi, nous avons toutes sortes de problèmes , nous n'avons pas assez d'argent, nous ne nous sentons pas bien, il fait trop chaud ,il fait trop froid, il y a trop de pluie.... Alors - pensons à ce satyre - coincé dans une niche dans un village détruit par un séisme en 1887. Tout ce qu'il peut faire c'est de jouer de la flûte de Pan et d'espérer une installation plus confortable.

As you drive into Menton from the Italian border, you see the glorious facade of the Old Town. The colours change depending on the light, the
weather, the time of day, but they are always glorious.

The Colour Green

The Riviera Palace is one of Menton's stunning Belle Epoque buildings. Once a 'palace' it has since been converted into apartments and with all the glorious features retained. Soon, Menton Daily Photo will do a series on this amazing building and I know you'll love it as much as I do.

Meanwhile this entrance to the private gardens fits the requirement of Theme Day which is 'the colour green' - so I give you a green gate and a green garden.

Le Riviéra Palace est l'un des superbes immeubles de Menton de la Belle Epoque. Ce palace a été transformé depuis en appartements mais il a conservé toute sa magnifique apparence. Bientôt, Menton Daily Photo fera une série sur cet immeuble étonnant et j'espère que vous l'aimerez autant que moi.

Under Construction - the Jean Cocteau Museum

The new Jean Cocteau museum has been under construction for nearly two years now and is due to open in November. An American benefactor, the late Severin Wunderman had the largest collection of Cocteau's work in the world. He has generously donated the majority of that collection to Menton. The new museum, designed by architect, Rudy Ricciotti stands between the sea and the old market building. Naturally it doesn't please everyone as it's a modern building but I think the majority are inclined to say 'let's wait and see.'

Le nouveau musée Jean Cocteau est en cours de construction depuis près de deux ans et devrait ouvrir ses portes en Novembre prochain. Un mécène américain, (aujourd'hui disparu) Séverin Wunderman possédait la plus grande collection d'œuvres de Cocteau dans le monde. Il a généreusement fait don de la majorité de cette collection à Menton. Le nouveau musée, conçu
par l'architecte, Rudy Ricciotti est situé entre la mer et le vieux marché. Naturellement, il ne fait pas l'unanimité car c'est un bâtiment moderne, mais je pense que les mentonnais dans leur majorité sont enclins à dire "Attendons pour voir."

Mailboxes

The subject for this month's Theme Day is 'mailboxes' - the first two are in the medieval village of Roquebrune and the last one, full of unwanted mail, is in Ventimiglia Alta across the border in Italy.

The Edge of the Cemetery

Theme Day this month and the word is 'edges' - so here are a lot of them... the edges of the cross and pedestal, the edge of the building, the rounded edges of the pillars and the worn edges of the rusty wrought iron gate. Perhaps too, think of the people who are buried here in Menton's old cemetery who have edged their way to heaven.

And what about those who feel a little on edge hoping they don't end up here anytime soon...

Peut-être aussi, peut-on penser aux gens qui sont enterrés ici dans le vieux cimetière de Menton qui ont espérer tracer leur chemin vers le paradis. Et que dire de ceux qui se sentent un peu sur le bord l'abîme en espérant qu'ils ne finissent pas ici de sitôt ...

Mimosa

A day's break from the Fete de Citron for the usual Theme Day which this month is 'My favorite part of town.'

There is so much beauty in Menton that it's almost impossible to choose. The Mediterranean, the market, the cafes and bars, the mountains, the hill villages. If I had to choose though it would be the iconic Old Town of Menton or one of the medieval villages, such as Gorbio, where I live.

So here's a tiny ruelle in Gorbio village with one of the many mimosa trees in bloom. In the smaller photo, I'm re-posting one of my favourite shots of Menton's Old Town - the colours of the south.

Pour l'habituelle journée thématique du mois, on fait une pause avec la Fête de Citron. Ce mois-ci le thème est: «Ma partie préférée de la ville."

Il y a tant de beautés à Menton qu'il est presque impossible de choisir. La Méditerranée, le marché, les cafés et les bars, les montagnes, les villages perchés. Si je devais choisir parmi elles ce serait l'emblématique Vieille Ville de Menton ou l'un des villages médiévaux tels que Gorbio, où je vis.

Alors voici une petite ruelle du village de Gorbio avec l'un des nombreuse mimosas en fleurs. Dans la petite photo, je publie de nouveau une de mes photos préférées de la vieille ville de Menton - les couleurs du sud.

It's that time of year again...

It's that time of year again... oranges are everywhere in Menton. These guys work for the parks department of Menton and are taking a break from putting up the Christmas decorations in the Jardins Bioves.

Voici revenue la saison ...Les oranges sont partout à Menton. Ces hommes travaillent pour le service des jardins de la ville et là, ils prennent une pause pendant la mise en place des décorations de Noël dans les Jardins Bioves.

Mindless Graffiti in Menton

There is no street art in Menton, not even interesting graffiti - just mindless tags defacing one particular square in the Old Town.

The main photo was taken outside the market - the smaller one in the square I mentioned.

The Mairie says it costs a fortune to keep cleaning it up, surveillance cameras have been suggested but so far no real solution. As soon as they clean it off, it appears again.

The last photo at least has a message and I thank Nathalie for the translation (I had problems with the word 'bêst' - it doesn't exist in the dictionary). Translation: 'la bête d'amour' (the love beast!) and la 'best' d'amour (the best lover) so it combines the meanings of 'best' and 'beast'.

Menton's Night Market - Bracelets

It's Theme Day once again in the City Daily Photo community and today's subject is an 'Open Air Market.'

Here we see one of the stalls at Menton's Night Market that takes place in the summer months at the foot of the Old Town near to the Bastion. It's great fun to wander the stalls after dinner and perhaps be tempted by the many goodies on display.

Lady in Pink

Pink dress, crutches (one purple and one green) gold shoes, bright lipstick and eye shadow. I've seen this lady around Menton and despite the obvious difficulty she has in walking she doesn't let it get her down. The bright colours she wears suit her obviously sunny personality.

Reflections - the Dead Bird

This dog wants to hold on to the wing of a dead sea bird that he's found on the beach. His owner wants it off him. Eventually the owner won.
