Daily Photo Theme Day: A Typical Breakfast

First buy your croissant! This lady runs my favourite bakery in Menton. Not only is the bread great but she never stops smiling. Below you'll find a photograph of breakfast possibles - personally I love the brioches sucrés. (You can buy cheaper elsewhere but not as good!) I've never been sure that the French really do eat croissants every day, so do visit Eric in Paris where you'll get confirmation of this and can also click on a link to read all about croissants.

Daily Photo Theme Day: The Colour Red

In choosing 'something red' from Menton, I was spoiled for choice: restaurants with red tablecloths, baker's shops with a red oleander outside, red clothes hanging out to dry from an ancient window - and all prettier than this photograph - but somehow the word tabac takes me back to my first trip to France from England, where I lived at the time. I was 18 and went to Paris and then took le train bleu to Cannes. That's when I fell in love with France and why I came to live here 16 years ago and why I have absolutely no intention of leaving - ever.

Theme Day: A view from my room

Sometimes I can't believe how lucky I am to have a view of the Mediterranean - alright it's only a glimpse - but also the countryside around. The hillside to the right in this photo is densely wooded and full of birds and other wildlife - all of which continues to amaze me, situated as I am, only 11 kilometres from the high-density of Monte Carlo. My neighbour, just above me, keeps pet sheep.

So if you come to visit, we'll be sitting at this table with a bottle of something very drinkable between us. Probably an aperitif before dining in Menton or Gorbio.

Monthly Theme Day: City Exchange - New York City

18 months ago I was in NYC (a city I love to bits) for a few days and had always wanted to visit the wondrous Chrysler Building but somehow, on previous visits, had never gotten around to it. Well you can't! You can go into the lobby and that's about it. You peer across a barrier at those incredible Art Deco elevator doors but can go no further - so I decided to go to the top of the Empire State Building and look at the building from above. As many of you will know, when you get to the viewing gallery of the Empire State Building, there is a map listing all the main buildings and landmarks you see - but this part of the map stopped me in my tracks. Look above and you'll see just the outline of where the Twin Towers were before 9/11. Somehow, when you look at this drawing and see the height of the Towers in relation to the rest of the buildings in Manhattan - well, it's mind boggling. I was staying in TriBeCa so took the opportunity to visit Ground Zero. And today, on A City Exchange, I show this as my tiny tribute to those who died that day.

Theme Day: a Public Mail Box

The truth is I got obsessed with Menton mail boxes (thankyou Daily Photo - like I've nothing better to do with my life) and then, being a typical Libra, couldn't decide which one I wanted to post, so here are three of them. This one is a tiny box, covered in cobwebs with strange bits of wire hanging below. It's on the outside of an old house on Route de Gorbio, a windy road that leads from Menton to the village of Gorbio.

This one is in the centre of Menton which a poubelle below it. Goodness know why? I suppose if you drop the letter it falls into the bin, which of course it couldn't 'cos you couldn't open the bin properly anyway.

This one is outside the main mail sorting office in Menton. Somehow the hard yellow of the mail box on a soft pink wall doesn't please my eye, but I can't keep posting idyllic photos of Menton. You need to see the truth sometimes...

Daily Photo Theme - Men at Work - whoops...

This rather spectacular crash happened one morning a couple of weeks ago just below the autoroute that runs from France to Italy. It happened near to my village, Gorbio. The lorry, with a crane attached, crashed 20 metres over the side of the autoroute's service road. Here you see the truck about 20 mins after it fell. The construction workers have clambered down the hillside to try and prevent the truck falling further down the valley to the river below. Fortunately no one was in the crane when this happened. About a week later an enormous crane was brought to the site to get the fallen vehicle up again.
