Fete Patronale - Blessing of the Animals - Bouchette

The owners and animals gather in front of the 300 year old elm tree to listen to the curé.

Note the Bassett Hound in the centre right. That's Bouchette from the Beausejour Restaurant. She isn't on a lead but brings herself along each year to be blessed!

Notez le Hound Bassett dans le centre droit. C'est Bouchette du restaurant Beauséjour. Elle n'est pas en laisse, mais elle vient chaque année pour être bénie!

Owners and their dogs are resting against the wall whilst waiting for the curé to give the blessing.  Meanwhile, the sheep gets a final grooming so she'll look her best.

Les propriétaires et leurs chiens se reposent contre le mur en attendant le curé qui donnera la bénédiction. Pendant ce temps, le mouton reçoit un dernier toilettage, ainsi il sera au mieux de son apparence.

The Dog and the Cat

This man is often to be seen in the pedestrian street of Menton begging with his dog and his cat.

He seems to have a relationship with them and certainly the little Chihuahua and the cat play happily together.

I still wish people wouldn't try to attract money though by displaying animals in this way.

 On voit souvent cet homme, mendiant avec son chien et son chat, dans la rue piétonne à Menton.

Il semble avoir des liens avec eux et le petit chihuahua et le chat jouent certainement joyeusement ensemble.

Mais j'aimerais que les gens n'essayent pas de gagner de l'argent en exposant des animaux de cette façon.

Pause Chiens

This is such a typical scene in Menton.  People - with their dogs - often take a break and sit on the low wall at Place aux Herbes, others take a table on the terrace of a bar, warm behind a covering of plastic.

C'est une scène typique de Menton. Les gens - avec leurs chiens - font souvent une pause en s'asseyant sur le muret de la Place aux Herbes, d'autres prennent une table à la terrasse d'un bar, au  chaud derrière un revêtement de plastique.

Clos du Peyronnet - Prickle

Yesterday we saw the demijohns at the Clos du Peyronnet.  Today we see the 'guardian of the glass' - William's dog, Prickle.  I published a differently cropped version of this photo on Riviera Dogs so this is for anyone who didn't see it.

Prickle isn't really guarding the glass - she's probably waiting for a gecko to appear...

Hier, nous avons vu les dames-jeannes du Clos du Peyronnet. Aujourd'hui, nous voyons la «gardienne du verre » - la  chienne de William, Prickle.  J'ai publié une version différemment recadrée de cette photo sur Riviera Dogs, donc c'est pour ceux qui ne l'on pas vue.

Prickle n'est pas vraiment "la gardienne du verre" - elle attend sans doute l'apparition d'un gecko ... 

Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy - the Blessing of the Animals

At the Fête Patronale de la Saint-Barthélemy, the day starts with the Blessing of the Animals. Around 10h.30 the square slowly fills mostly with dogs and a few horses. Locals will tell you that in the old days you'd also see donkeys, sheep, goats and perhaps a cow.

Some of the dogs you see in this photos are to be seen on Riviera Dogs.

Tomorrow we'll see the horses and after that we meet the curé who conducts the blessing along with the Pénitents Blancs (the White Penitents).

Lors de la Fête Patronale de la Saint -Barthélemy, la journée commence avec la bénédiction des animaux. Vers 10h.30,  la place se remplit lentement la plupart du temps avec des chiens et quelques chevaux. Les villageois vous  diront que dans l'ancien temps, vous auriez vu aussi des ânes, des moutons, des chèvres et peut-être une vache.

Certains des chiens qui sont sur cette photos sont à voir sur Riviera Dogs.

Demain, nous verrons les chevaux et après cela nous rencontrons le curé qui effectue la bénédiction ainsi que les Pénitents Blancs.

All That Matters ...

Yesterday I went to a dog show near San Remo - about 40 minutes along the coast in Italy. San Remo is a beautiful Belle Epoque town, not that I took any photos as it was falling down with rain. The dog show was held in the covered flower market at Arma di Taggia.

Whether or not this Bedlington terrier won his class seems irrelevant - these two have each other and that's all that matters.

Hier je suis allée à une exposition canine à proximité de San Rémo - environ 40 minutes le long de la côte en Italie . San Rémo est une  jolie ville de style Belle Epoque , mais je n'ai pas pris de photos car il pleuvait . L'exposition de chiens a eu lieu au marché aux fleurs couvert à Arma di Taggia .

Peu importe que ce Bedlington terrier soit ou non  le vainqueur de sa catégorie, ces deux-là sont faits l'un pour l'autre et c'est l'essentiel.

These Old Streets

It's Christmas Eve and a lady walks her dog in the medieval streets of the Old Town.

It's easy to let the mind blur and imagine another lady - centuries ago - long dress, dirt on the hem, as she walks to the market on Place aux Herbes. These old streets breathe history.

C'est la veille de Noël et une dame promène son chien dans les rues médiévales de la Vieille Ville.

Il est facile de laisser l'esprit s'évader pour imaginer une autre dame - dans les siècles passés
- en robe longue, de la saleté sur l'ourlet tandis qu' elle se promène au marché de la Place aux Herbes. Ces vieilles rues respirent l'histoire.

Let's Go Shopping!

France welcomes dogs almost anywhere. No problem taking a dog to a restaurant, of course - a water bowl will be is provided.

I'm not sure of the law concerning dogs in a supermarket. Probably not allowed and certainly I've never seen a big dog walking around a supermarket, but you often see a small pooch sitting in a bag placed inside the shopping trolley - doubtless hoping their owner will browse the dog food section.

This is Danette, by the way. She's a Bichon Maltais (a Maltese Terrier) and is three years old.

En France, les chiens sont accueillis presque partout. Il n'y a pas de problème si on amène un chien dans un restaurant où bien sûr - une gamelle d'eau lui sera offerte.

Je ne suis pas sûre de la loi concernant les chiens dans un supermarché. Ce n'est probablement pas autorisé , et je n'ai certainement jamais vu un gros chien s'y déplaçant, mais on voit souvent un petit toutou dans un sac placé à l'intérieur du chariot qui a sans doute l'espoir que son propriétaire va parcourir le rayon des aliments pour chiens.

A ce propos, voici Danette. C'est un Bichon Maltais , elle a de trois ans.

The Dog and the Driftwood

After the rain, the storms, the wind, the sun is back. This is the Sablettes beach yesterday - a beautiful blue sky but broken canoes and a load of detritrus washed up onto the sand.

Menton got off easily though. Roquebrune has far more problems with destroyed beaches and sadly in the Var (the next department along from the Alpes-Martimes) they suffered terrible flooding and 7 deaths.

A local canine is more than happy to help move some of the driftwood. You can see more of Scott at Riviera Dogs.

Après la pluie, la tempête, le vent, le soleil est de retour. Voici la plage des Sablettes hier, sous un beau ciel bleu mais avec des canots brisés et une couverture de détritus échoués sur le sable.


Menton s'en sort bien. Roquebrune a eu beaucoup plus de problèmes avec des plages détruites et malheureusement le Var ( département voisin des Alpes- Maritimes ) a subi de terribles inondations et on y compte 7 morts.

Un chien de la ville est plus qu'heureux d' aider à déplacer une partie des bois flottés. Vous pouvez en savoir plus sur Scott plus dans Riviera Dogs.

The Dog under the Bench

So there I was, early one morning, walking along the promenade at the foot of the Old Town when I saw this Golden Retriever sleeping under a bench. (small photo) I confess for one second I thought he'd been abandoned until I walked past and saw that his owner was sleeping above him. In the long shot, look carefully and you can see the bench with dog and owner.

Comme je me promenais tôt le matin, marchant le long de la promenade au pied de la vieille ville, j'ai vu ce Golden Retriever dormant sous un banc. (petite photo) J'avoue que pendant un instant j'ai pensé qu'il avait été abandonné jusqu'à ce que, en passant, je vois sa propriétaire dormir sur le banc au dessus de lui. Sur la photo en perspective, regardez attentivement et vous pourrez voir le banc avec le chien et sa
propriétaire.

Spring Forward...

In Spring we shed our winter coats and the dogs do too. This little shih-tzu has just been collected from the Poodle Parlour at the foot of the Old Town.

Au printemps nous nous débarrassons de nos manteaux d'hiver et les chiens font de même. Cette petite shih-tzu vient juste de sortir du Salon de Toilettage au bas de la vieille ville.
