The Wyandotte

Isn't he a beautiful cockerel? He's a Wyandotte and lives with his three females in the gardens of the Clos du Peyronnet in Menton. The Wyandottes were a Red Indian tribe.

A beautiful double Peony currently in flower at Le Clos du Peyronnet in Garavan. Perhaps like a woman of a certain age and past her prime!

Clos du Peyronnet - Ipheion Rolf Fiedler

Ipheions are normally white (there are some in my own garden) but this is a rarer variety called Ipheion Rolf Fiedler.  It sat in it's lovely weathered pot on the equally weathered table at my favourite Menton garden,  Le Clos du Peyronnet.

Yesterday we saw the demijohns at the Clos du Peyronnet.  Today we see the 'guardian of the glass' - William's dog, Prickle.  I published a differently cropped version of this photo on Riviera Dogs so this is for anyone who didn't see it.

Prickle isn't really guarding the glass - she's probably waiting for a gecko to appear...

The Clos du Peyronnet is one of my favourite Menton gardens. It's privately owned but open to the public on occasion and you can arrange garden visits. The owner William Waterfield has recently installed these beautiful old demijohns in the lowest of the pools. They appear to float, don't they?

Rosa Gigantea at the Clos du Peyronnet

Menton is famous for its gardens of which the Clos du Peyronnet is one of my favourites. Here's a pretty corner with Rosa Gigantea tumbling over a wall. The garden has been in the same family since 1912. For an interview with the owner, William Waterfield - please click on the link.

This was taken in April last year with my old camera, the Lumix FZ18.

Le Clos du Peyronnet - the Water Birds

Remember the wisteria the other day? This is another part of the same romantic garden.

The splash of pink is a Judas tree and in the foreground two beautiful water birds stand by one of the pools, hidden by the foliage in the foreground.

The Soft Light of Morning

We're still at Le Clos du Peyronnet looking at the facade of the Old Town from William's belvedere. We see a hedge in the foreground because I'm short! Another time, I'll take a stool or ask William to unlock a nearby gate.

This was taken at 09.00h from a point very near to the Italian border. The mountain behind is the Tête du Chien which is above Monaco. The colours of the buildings are so much softer than we see in the bright light of midday.

Wisteria at Le Clos du Peyronnet - and Prickle

Today, we are inside the wisteria-clad pergola at Le Clos du Peyronnet and so is Prickle, William Waterfield's little Jack Russell terrier. Prickle is on hand to welcome every visitor to this beautiful garden but at this moment, she's off for a nap...

Wisteria at Le Clos du Peyronnet

Wisteria! When the wisteria is in bloom, then you know it's springtime in Menton.

Here you see the glorious wisteria covering the pergola of the Clos du Peyronnet, one of Menton's famous gardens. You can visit but as it's a private garden, you need to make an appointment. Click on the link above to read more and click HERE to read an interview with the owner William Waterfield. This romantic garden - I adore it - has been in the same family for three generations.

Thanks to Virginia who reminded me it is 'wisteria time' with her lovely photographs from Birmingham, Alabama Daily Photo.

Le Clos du Peyronnet - Wisteria 3

Another pergola at the beautiful Clos du Peyronnet. This glorious garden is in Garavan and just 200 metres from the Italian frontier.

A cup of tea with William, sitting at this table is heaven - looking (to the left of this photo) over beautiful pools (plus ducks) and beyond to the Mediterranean - it is absolutely my favourite Menton garden.

This wisteria - click to enlarge the smaller photo - is called 'Black Dragon.'

This is the last photo of the Clos for the moment but we will return for a series on this beautiful garden later in the year. Tomorrow, the last in the 'wisteria' series, and this time at Place des Herbes in the Old Town.

Le Clos du Peyronnet - Wisteria 2

Here we see the enormous size of these wisteria plants, the trunks almost as wide as the columns. There is more than one variety planted along this pergola. Some years back one of the pillars was broken in two by the strength of the wisteria - but again, it was its very strength that prevented the pillar actually falling. Recently William had it replaced - an exceedingly delicate operation.

In the past, William has given 'wisteria parties' in April - a wonderful way to admire these ancient plants in bloom.

Le Clos du Peyronnet - Wisteria

Indulge me! I know we are supposed to be continuing our visit to Rue Longue - and we will, we will, but I just wanted to show you some of Menton's wisteria before it disappears.

The Clos du Peyronnet is one of Menton's famous gardens, in this case, one of the very few private gardens in Menton that is open for garden tours and to the general public on certain days in June. It's owned by William Waterfield and I plan a series on the Clos - we have a treat ahead - but over the next few days, we'll just look at various wisterias. Then back to Rue Longue.

I took this yesterday afternoon. This particular wisteria is almost over - William said it was at its best two weeks ago. These few fronds tho, high up, still show their long, narrow form and beautiful delicacy.
