We are having glorious weather in Menton at the moment. Here you see the last rays of sun carressing the Cocteau Museum (that's the building that looks like teeth on the left of the photo).

Nous avons un temps superbe à Menton en ce  moment. Ici, vous voyez les derniers rayons de soleil caressant le Musée Cocteau (c'est le bâtiment faisant penser à des dents sur la gauche de la photo).

Bastion

This is the Bastion, the interior of which was renovated by Jean Cocteau himself and now houses a small part of his art. The rest, of course, is in the main Musée Cocteau.

Voici le Bastion dont l'intérieur a été rénové par Jean Cocteau lui-même et qui abrite aujourd'hui une petite partie de ses oeuvres. Le reste, bien sûr, se trouve dans le grand Musée Cocteau. 

Cocteau Museum - the Lazy Lizard

The mosaic of the lizard, created in pebbles, is a copy of one of Cocteau's designs.   It covers the courtyard of the Jean Cocteau Museum.  The lizard was dear to the heart of Cocteau who saw it as a symbol of the Mediterranean langour that he admired.

La mosaïque du lézard, réalisée en galets, est une copie d'un des dessins de Cocteau. Elle couvre le parvis du musée. Le lézard était cher au cœur de Cocteau qui voyait en lui comme un symbole de la paresse méditerranéenne qu'il admirait.

Cocteau Museum - the Courtyard

As you can see there is a large courtyard in front the Jean Cocteau museum.  The museum is to the immediate left of the planted area.

The boules courts used to be here, but they had to be moved elsewhere before the project began. Meanwhile this open space, which allows the market building to be seen without hindrance,  is used for displays of dance, street theatre and music.  In summer,  you can sit and enjoy a coffee or cold drink at the tables and chairs that line the courtyard.

Tomorrow: we'll see the detail in the pebble design.

Comme vous pouvez le voir, il y a un grand parvis devant le musée Jean Cocteau. Le musée est situé immédiatement à gauche de la superficie plantée.

Auparavant, des boulodromes se trouvaient  là, mais ils ont dû être déplacés ailleurs avant le début du projet. En attendant cet espace ouvert, qui permet de voir sans obstruction le beau bâtiment du marché, est utilisé pour la danse, du théâtre de rue et la musique. En été, vous pouvez vous asseoir et profiter d'un café ou une boisson fraiche sur les tables et les chaises qui bordent le parvis.

Demain: nous verrons le détail du motif en galets.

This photo shows that the Cocteau Museum is a very low building and doesn't detract from the beauty of the Old Town and the market building. This was taken from way across the bay in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. From a distance, the museum looks like a row of teeth!

Cocteau Museum - the Architecture

 In 2007, the city of Menton launched a competition for the design of the new Jean Cocteau Museum to house the works of Jean Cocteau - the result of an exceedingly generous donation by an American businessman, Severin Wunderman. The contract was awarded to Rudy Ricciotti and here you see the finished result. The builder cover 2700m2. More shots from different angles tomorrow.

En 2007, la ville de Menton a lancé un concours pour la conception d'un nouveau Musée qui abriterait les œuvres de Jean Cocteau - le résultat d'une donation extrêmement généreuse de l'homme d'affaires américain, Séverin Wunderman. Le chantier a été attribué à Rudy Ricciotti et ici vous voyez le résultat final. La construction occupe  2700 m2. Demain, d'autres vues sous  des angles différents.

The slats of this structure outside the Jean Cocteau museum in Menton create fascinating patterns of light and shade. The low white building you see in the background is part of the Cocteau museum itself.

Gérard Eppelé in Gorbio - the Photographer

Our last day at the Gérard Eppelé exhibition in the Tour Lascaris in Gorbio.  The painting on the right is called The Photographer.  I love that an artist paints a photographer.  And finally, because you know I love photographing people I can't resist another of the artist.  He is such a good subject, so much character in his face and a good looking man. If you are local, do come and visit the exhibition - it's great!

C'est notre dernier jour à l'exposition de Gérard Eppelé dans la Tour Lascaris Tour à Gorbio.  La peinture sur la droite s'appelle "Le Photographe."  J'aime qu'un artiste peigne un photographe. Et enfin, parce que vous savez que j'aime photographier des personnages je ne peux pas résister à un autre portrait de Monsieur Eppelé. C'est un bon sujet, avec beaucoup de caractère dans le visage et c'est un bel homme. Si vous êtes dans la région, n'hésitez pas à venir visiter son exposition - c'est génial!

Gérard Eppelé in Gorbio - Meet the Artist

Meet the artist - Monsieur Gérard Eppelé.  He's standing in front of one of his paintings which you see below.   Gérard Eppelé was born in 1929 in Cherbourg but spent his childhood in Morocco. He studied art in Toulouse and spent two years at the school for Aubusson tapestry.  He first worked in the film industry as a decorative painter mostly for Max Douy.  He also worked with directors,  Renoir, Autant-Lara and Bunuel but in 1959 he was forced to stop for health reasons and settled in south-eastern France.  However, it was in Vence he met Dubuffet and then worked as his assistant.  And it was Dubuffet who encouraged him to hold his first exhibition at the Gallery Chave. Since then he has not stopped painting, drawing and sculpting and his work is exhibited and appreciated throughout the world.  He lives in Arles.

The drawing is called 'Le trouble en sol' and the painting below is 'Le temps suspendu 1/11.'

Voila  Monsieur Gérard Eppelé, l'artiste. Il est debout en face de l'un de ses tableaux que vous voyez ci-dessous. Gérard Eppele est né en 1929 à Cherbourg, mais a passé son enfance au Maroc. Il a étudié l'Art à Toulouse puis pendant deux ans la tapisserie à l'école d'Aubusson. Il a d'abord travaillé dans l'industrie cinématographique en tant que peintre décorateur principalement pour Max Douy. Il a également travaillé avec d'autres  réalisateurs - Renoir, Autant-Lara et Bunuel, mais en 1959 il a été forcé de s'arrêter pour des raisons de santé et il s'est installé dans le sud-est de la France. Alors qu'il était à Vence, il a rencontré Dubuffet et a été son assistant. C'est Dubuffet qui l'a encouragé à faire sa première exposition à la Galerie Chave. Depuis lors, il n'a pas cessé de peindre, de dessiner, de  sculpter et son travail est exposé et apprécié partout dans le monde. Il habite a Arles.

Le dessin est appelé « Le mal en sol » et la peinture ci-dessous est « Le Temps suspendu 1/11. 

Gerard Eppele in Gorbio - the Admirer

 The paintings, drawings and sculptures by this year's featured artist, Gérard Eppelé, are displayed on the lower level of the chateau in Gorbio with its wonderful vaulted ceilings.

The stylish lady admiring a sculpture called 'The Interrogation' is Madame Josianne Tricotti who is in charge of the Service of Patrimony in Menton and is a membre of Menton's Society of Art and History.  She adored the sculptures - me too - and I also liked her shoes!

Les peintures, les dessins et les sculptures de l'artiste vedette de cette année, Gérard Eppelé, sont exposés au niveau inférieur du château de Gorbio, sous ses magnifiques plafonds voûtés.

La dame élégante admirant une sculpture appelée « L'Interrogatoire » est Madame Josianne Tricotti qui est en charge du Service du Patrimoine de Menton et aussi membre de la Société d'Art et d'Histoire de Menton.  Elle adorait les sculptures - moi aussi - et j'ai aussi aimé ses chaussures!

Cocteau's Lizard

In a few weeks Menton Daily Photo will be featuring Menton's new Jean Cocteau Museum, but today, because it's Theme Day in the City Daily Photo community, here's a glimpse of part of the courtyard which features Cocteau's famous lizard motif. And as you can see, it's taken on a life of its own as children love following the pattern created in the pebbles.

Cobbles created with pebbles like this are common in Menton - you find them, for instance, outside the Basilica.

Dans quelques semaines, Menton Daily Photo présentera le nouveau Musée Jean Cocteau de Menton, mais aujourd'hui, parce que c'est le jour Thème dans la communauté City Daily Photo, voici un aperçu d'une partie de la cour qui représente le célèbre motif du lézard du Cocteau. Et comme vous pouvez le voir, depuis qu'il a été inauguré en Novembre, il a sa vie propre comme les enfants qui suivent leur chemin balisé par des cailloux.

Des pavages créés avec des cailloux comme celui-ci sont communs à Menton - comme celui devant la basilique.

Under Construction - the Jean Cocteau Museum

The new Jean Cocteau museum has been under construction for nearly two years now and is due to open in November. An American benefactor, the late Severin Wunderman had the largest collection of Cocteau's work in the world. He has generously donated the majority of that collection to Menton. The new museum, designed by architect, Rudy Ricciotti stands between the sea and the old market building. Naturally it doesn't please everyone as it's a modern building but I think the majority are inclined to say 'let's wait and see.'

Le nouveau musée Jean Cocteau est en cours de construction depuis près de deux ans et devrait ouvrir ses portes en Novembre prochain. Un mécène américain, (aujourd'hui disparu) Séverin Wunderman possédait la plus grande collection d'œuvres de Cocteau dans le monde. Il a généreusement fait don de la majorité de cette collection à Menton. Le nouveau musée, conçu
par l'architecte, Rudy Ricciotti est situé entre la mer et le vieux marché. Naturellement, il ne fait pas l'unanimité car c'est un bâtiment moderne, mais je pense que les mentonnais dans leur majorité sont enclins à dire "Attendons pour voir."

The Watchman by Nicolas Lavarenne

This poor man has been stuck up a pole in the gardens of the Palais Carnoles for as long as I can remember. He's called Le Grand Guetteur (The Tall Watchman) by the sculptor, Nicolas Lavarenne (see video) He represents a man in medieval times who acted as watchman in the defence of his hilltop village.

Depuis aussi longtemps que je me souvienne,ce pauvre homme est perché sur un poteau dans les jardins du Palais Carnolès. On l'appelle Le Grand Guetteur, oeuvre du sculpteur Nicolas Lavarenne (voir video). Il représente un homme du Moyen Age qui occupe la fonction de guetteur pour assurer la défense de son village perché.
