Early Birds: the Man who collects Dummies

Meet Jean-Pierre. He's one of many who keep Menton's streets and beaches clean. Take a look at his bin... he has been collecting babies' dummies (pacifiers) for ten years and displays them on a piece of wire. We all know how babies throw their dummies away - now we know where to find them.

Voici Jean-Pierre. Il fait parti du nombreux personnel chargé du maintient de la propreté des rues et des plages de Menton. Jetez un oeil à sa poubelle...il a collecté des sucettes de bébés pendant dix ans et maintenant, il les a réunies en guirlande sur un cordon. Nous savons tous comment les bébés jettent leurs sucettes au loin - maintenant nous savons où les trouver.

What is it about Italians? Just look at this beautiful vivacious Italian woman eating at La Pergola on the beach in Menton - a recommended restaurant, by the way. Of course she can't speak without using her hands. Isn't she marvellous?

The Strawberry Seller

Yesterday - the strawberries. Today - the lady who sells them. And when she's not doing that, she's spraying the broad beans to keep them looking fresh.

The Saxaphone Player

Nicolas from Italy plays his wonderfully mournful and beautiful music. As I listened, at least a dozen people passed by but no one gave him any money.

l'écoutais,, au moins une douzaine de personnes est passée devant lui, mais personne ne lui a donné de l'argent.

The Salesgirl

A pretty young salesgirl at Menton's Saturday market.

Isn't it interesting how the same person, snapped a few seconds apart, can look so different. In the first she is somewhat serious and looking older. In the lower shot, where she has the biggest grin, you can see she is a young girl. Which is the real 'her'? Probably both.

N'est-il pas intéressant de voir comment la même personne, photographiée à quelques secondes d'intervalle, peut être si différente. Dans la première photo, elle est plus grave et parait plus âgée. Sur le dernier cliché, avec son grand sourire, on voit que c'est une toute jeune fille. Sur laquelle de ces photos a-t-on la vraie image d' «elle»? Probablement sur les deux.

Theme Day - Favorite Photo of 2010

On the first of January each year, bloggers in the City Daily Photo community post their favourite photo of the previous 12 months. Here's mine - perhaps not a surprise as people are my favourite subject. This old boy was sitting outside a patisserie in Menton, deep in thought and reaching into his pocket for a match.

PhotoMenton - the Young Photographer

PhotoMenton is becoming a bigger and bigger event every year.  This year 120 photographers are exhibiting at the Palais de l'Europe in Menton, including me!  My first time and so rather scary but everyone is so friendly and helpful and I'm learning so much.

Meet Barbara Jallais - she not only takes fascinating photographs but as you see is a work of art herself - she's young and beautiful and lives in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.

L'exposition PhotoMenton devient un évènement de plus en plus important chaque année. Depuis samedi, nous sommes cent vingt photographes qui exposons nos oeuvres au Palais de l'Europe à Menton.Comme c'est la première fois pour moi, je suis très impressionnée. Heureusement tout le monde est amical et  la recontre des autres exposants enrichit mes connaissances.

Ainsi, Barbara Jallais qui ne prend pas seulement des photographies fascinantes mais comme vous pouvez le voir, est elle-même une oeuvre d'art - elle est belle, jeune et vit à Roquebrune Cap Martin.

The Man with the Bucket of Fish

The bucket is heavy and the fisherman had to sit down to get his breath. I asked if I could take his photo and he agreed but I think he was too exhausted to smile.

From now on - see below - I'm going to try and publish in French as well as English. My friend and neighbour, Agnès has kindly agreed to correct my French. Every foreigner in France should have a neighbour as wonderful as Agnès.

Le seau est lourd et le pêcheur a dû s'asseoir et reprendre son souffle. J'ai demandé si je pouvais prendre sa photo et il a accepté mais je pense qu'il était trop épuisé pour sourire.

A partir de maintenant je vais essayer de publier en français et en anglais. Mon amie et voisine, Agnès a aimablement accepté de corriger mon français. Tout étranger en France doit avoir une voisine aussi merveilleuse qu' Agnès.

Summer has gone and we've had two days and two nights of heavy rain - so obviously this is an archive photo. I love taking 'people' photos - they fascinate me - but why do so many young people look miserable?

Christophe - the Potato, Onion and Garlic Man!

Christophe is a fixture at Menton's indoor market. You want a specific variety of potato, he'll have it. You want to know the best potato or onion for a specific dish, he knows the answer.

And more than that, Christophe has a cheery word for everyone and never stops smiling. And it doesn't hurt that he's good looking too!

The Pose

Today we are back on the port for the Newfoundland demonstration that took place a week or so ago. This lovely dog was sitting on the rocks with his owner and a young lady asked if she could have a photograph taken with him. Her husband snapped away...and so did I!
