Sunshine outside, shadows in.  At the Palais de l'Europe, Serge is painting one of the panels in preparation for the forthcoming PhotoMenton exhibition.

Menton's Town Hall

Just a glimpse of Menton's Town Hall. It was built in 1861 for Baron Honoré Ardoïno who was a botanist and historian of Menton. After he died the building was used to stage the celebrated Folies-Bergèere and then in 1898 it finally became the town hall.

Juste un aperçu de l'Hôtel de ville de Menton. Il a été construit en 1861 pour le baron Honoré Ardoïno qui était un botaniste et historien de Menton. Après sa mort le bâtiment a été utilisé pour mettre en scène les célèbres Folies-Bergère puis en 1898, il est finalement devenu l'Hôtel de ville.

Hôtel Adhémar de Lantagnac

This little alleyway is irresistible to me. Sometimes it's open, sometimes it's closed but when it's open it leads to the Hôtel particulier Adhémar de Lantagnac, which is not an hotel at all but is now used by the Service du Patrimone. An 'hôtel particulier' is a beautiful house that once belonged to a family of prominent citizens.

Here you'll find a small boutigue selling books on Menton and works of the artists of the region. There are exhibitions throughout the year but really just go in and look around - enjoy the frescoes, many sadly damaged, the beautiful old shutters, the original glass in the windows.

You'll find it at 24, Rue Saint Michel (the pedestrian street) and not far from Place aux Herbes.

Cette petite ruelle est irrésistible pour moi. Parfois, elle est accessible, parfois non, mais quand son portail est ouvert, elle conduit à l' Hôtel particulier Adhémar de Lantagnac, ce qui n'est pas un hôtel dans le sens ordinaire, et qui est maintenant utilisé par le Service du Patrimone. 'Hôtel particulier' signifie que c'est une belle maison qui appartient à une famille de notables de la ville.

Ici vous trouverez une petite Boutique qui vend de livres sur Menton et sur les œuvres des artistes de la région . Il y a des expositions tout au long de l'année, mais on peut juste entrer et pour regarder le décor, admirer les fresques dont beaucoup malheureusement sont endommagées, les beaux volets anciens, les carreaux d'origine des fenêtres.

Vous le trouverez au 24, Rue Saint-Michel ( la rue piétonne ) et non loin de la Place aux Herbes.

The Dolls of Bru

Each year the Rotary Club organises a massive Broc-Troc in the Palais de l'Europe in Menton. Broc-Troc means Broc - for brocante and Troc, which means to barter. These days it's simply a massive sale of antiques and every day items and it draws enormous crowds - this year: 11,000.

The seller of these dolls told me he bought up everything that was for sale in the company called 'Bru' in Valenciennes that closed in 1920. They were on sale for 10 euros each. The seller, François, lives at Draguignan in the Var and anyone interested can write to him at francoisit@hotmail.fr

Chaque année, le Rotary Club organise un énorme Broc-Troc au Palais de l'Europe à Menton. Broc-Troc: Broc pour brocante et Troc pour échange. Ces jours-ci c'est tout simplement une vente massive d'antiquités et d' objets usuels qui attire des foules énormes - cette année: 11,000.

Le vendeur de ces poupees m'a dit qu'il a acheté tout ce qui était à vendre à la société "Bru" à Valenciennes qui a fermé en 1920. Elles étaient en vente pour 10 euros l'une. Le vendeur, François, vit à Draguignan dans le Var et toute personne intéressée peut lui écrire à francoisit@hotmail.fr

The 'Broc-Troc'

Each year the Rotary Club of Menton organises a giant flea market (known as the Broc-Troc) at the Palais de l'Europe. By the end of the weekend, 5000 visitors had browsed and bought from the 130 stands.

Chaque année, le Rotary Club de Menton organise une grande brocante (connue sous le nom Broc-Troc) au Palais de l'Europe. À la fin du week-end, on comptait quelques 5000 personnes qui avaient visité ses 130 stands et y avaient fait des achats.

Old Glass

You can always tell real old glass - here, in the original window frames with their beautiful old shutters. We are in the Hotel d'Adhémar de Lantagnac which was built in the 18th century. It's now used by the Service du Patrimone and is listed as a Historic Monument in France. You'll find it on the walking street, near to Places aux Herbes.

On reconnait tout de suite de vrais carreaux anciens - ici, dans les cadres de fenêtre d'origine avec leurs beaux volets anciens. Nous sommes dans l'Hôtel d'Adhémar de Lantagnac construit au 18ème siècle et qui est maintenant le siège du Service du Patrimoine de la ville de Menton. Il est classé Monument historique de France et se trouve dans la rue piétonne, à proximité de la Place aux Herbes.

Orchidée - 2

Following on from the posting a couple of days ago, here we are inside the Palais de l'Europe which is holding the Orchid Exhibition. You can see the outside of this beautiful building on the left.

The Palais de l'Europe was built in the neo-classic style
in 1909 - the architect being inspired by the great buildings of the 1850s - 1880s. It was originally the Kursaal Casino, the fourth casino to be built in the town. In those days opera, ballet and theatre companies performed for the delight of the visitors.

The building was acquired by the town at the end of the 1950s, and after 1961 was known as the Palais de l'Europe. Here you'll find the Tourist Office, the municipal library, a theatre, a gallery and exhibition halls.

Hôtel de Ville - plus today's special offer...

This is Menton's Town Hall - entrance framed by what I think are ornamental bananas. Strangely the ornamentation at the top of the building (detail below) is covered in a protective cloth and I'm not sure why. It looks newly painted but why would it need covering? Can anyone answer this?

Palais de l'Europe

This building is alongside the Jardins Bioves and houses the Menton Tourist Office. Exhibitions take place here - many of them. There's been an orchid festival on - closed yesterday. Yes, I know I should have got there and haven't had time! Next year, I promise.
