Mortola Superiore - Learning to be a sculptor

Nicole's sculpture classes are held in an idyllic open air setting. Beginners work in clay before graduating to stone or marble. Here you see Nicole helping a student with her creation.

Expo 'Artists of the Village' - the Art

Three very different pieces of art by exhibitors at the exhibition, 'Artists of the Village' in Gorbio.

Rengaine ton Chevet (The Bedside Table plays the Same Old Song) by Frederic Simon, a delicate watercolour of one of Gorbio's narrow streets by Marcelle Vial and The Dancers by Solange Gazzo.

Expo 'Artists of the Village' - the Presbytery

 You can't miss the Presbytery. Just walk up the medievale village of Gorbio and stop when you see this old olive oil jar.You enter by a narrow door and and will then find five or six white-washed rooms, each displaying art by talented local artists.

Of course occasionally the stunning views compete with the art,  as you see in the black and white photo.

Vous ne pouvez pas manquer le presbytère. Il suffit de monter au village médiéval de Gorbio et de vous arrêtez quand vous voyez cette ancienne jarre à huile d'olive. Vous entrez par une porte étroite et ensuite  vous  trouvez cinq ou six pièces  blanchies à la chaux, chacune exposant les oeuvres des talentueux artistes locaux.

Bien sûr, à l'occasion, la vue imprenable rivalise avec l'art, comme vous le voyez dans la photo en noir et blanc.

Josephine Baker at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

This sculpture at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is of Josephine Baker the legendary singer, dancer and amazing woman who adopted 12 children - her Rainbow Tribe.  Later in life, a life that was beyond extraordinary, she was offered life-long accommodation at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin by Princess Grace of Monaco. The sculptor is Paul Pacotto.

A Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, cette sculpture représente Joséphine Baker, la  chanteuse/danseuse légendaire, et femme exceptionnelle qui a adopté 12 enfants - sa Tribu-Arc en ciel. The Sun Sets on Another Year...

Menton was packed yesterday - overflowing with Italians here to welcome in the New Year. If you are celebrating tonight I wish you a joyful evening and let's hope next year is a better one for this suffering world of ours.

Le soleil se couche pour finir encore une année. Au premier plan, Ulysse. Dans le lointain, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin et Monaco.

Hier, Menton était animée, grouillante d' Italiens venus ici pour accueillir la nouvelle année. Si vous fêtes le réveillon ce soir, je vous souhaite une joyeuse soirée en espérant que l'année prochaine soit meilleure pour notre monde qui souffre.

The Zebra-striped Rhino

The gardens of the Palais Carnoles. Shadows from a cycad make this rhinoceros look more like a zebra. The sculpture is the work of Ukrainian artist, Alexandra de Lazareff.

Bussana Vecchia - Daniela

Meet Daniela Merchante whose atelier we saw yesterday. Daniela was born in Turin in 1952 and since 1981 has lived and worked as a ceramist in Bussana Vecchia. Her work has been shown in exhibitions in St. Jean Cap Ferrat and Roquebrune and since 1992 she has organised pottery courses in nearby San Remo including ceramics classes at a training school for the unemployed.

I bought a beautiful bowl that now hangs from my terrace roof - it's filled with water and is much enjoyed by birds and also the tree rats. They are beautiful creatures - don't be put off by the word 'rat' - they eat fruit and seed.

Daniela was chatting to Sally from Sydney Daily Photo when I snapped her. Of course I wish now I'd asked her to look at the camera. Look at those beautiful piercing eyes - no wonder she is an artist.

Voici Daniela Merchante dont nous avons vu l'atelier hier . Daniela est née à Turin en 1952 et depuis 1981 elle vit et travaille en tant que céramiste à Bussana Vecchia . On a pu admirer son travail dans des expositions à Saint Jean Cap Ferrat ainsi qu'à Roquebrune et depuis 1992 elle donne des cours de poterie à proximité de San Remo, y compris des cours de céramique dans une école de formation pour les chômeurs.

J'ai acheté un beau bol qui est accroché maintenant sur mon toit terrasse - il est rempli d'eau ce qui le rend très appréciable pour les oiseaux et aussi pour les mulots. Ce sont de belles créatures - ne soyez pas rebutés parce qu'ils appartiennent à la même famille que les rats - ils ne mangent que des fruits et des graines.

Daniela bavardait avec Sally de Sydney Daily Photo quand je l'ai photographiée. Bien sûr, je me dis maintenant que j'aurais du lui demander de regarder l'appareil photo. Voyez ces yeux beaux perçants - pas étonnant que c'est une artiste.

Arlette Somazzi

Only three months ago I was taking photographs in the beautiful Belle Epoque building, the Riviera Palace - for a future series - and had the pleasure meeting the sculptress, Arlette Somazzi who lives and works there. She posed for these photographs and then we talked as she walked me around the private gardens (only residents have a key). She walked with care, once using my arm as we walked up some steps, but she had an inner energy and joy in life. When we talked about her work and some of her famous subjects, she said simply 'I love people.' So I was upset to read in yesterday's Nice-Matin that she died on Tuesday in her Riviera Palace apartment where she has lived for many years. She was on the eve of her 90th birthday.

Mme Somazzi was born in Bruges and you will find her work in many parts of Menton. It's her sculpture of Le Corbusier that greets you at the beginning of the Promenade le Corbusier. She has sculpted Prince Albert II of Monaco, Raymond Baree, Rudolph Nureyev,Arthur Miller, Marcel Pagnol, Jacques Brel and many more. Her bust of Cocteau stands by the Bastion museum - click HERE to view some of her work. Her most recent exhibition finished in June. Her funeral takes place today. It's such a privilege to have met this talented artist however briefly.

Il y a seulement trois mois , je prenais des photos au Riviéra Palace, superbe immeuble de la Belle Epoque,- pour une future série - et j'ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer la sculptrice, Arlette Somazzi qui vivait et y travaillait. Elle a posé pour ces photographies puis nous avons parlé en nous promenant dans les jardins privés (seuls les résidents en ont une clé). Elle marchait avec précaution, s'appuyant même une fois sur mon bras dans un escalier, mais elle avait une belle énergie intérieure et de la joie de vivre. Lorsque nous avons parlé de son travail et de certains de ses sujets célèbres, elle a dit simplement «J'aime les gens." Aussi,j'ai été bouleversée de lire hier dans Nice-Matin qu'elle est décédée mardi dans son appartement du Riviéra Palace, où elle a vécu pendant de nombreuses années. Elle était à l'aube de son 90e anniversaire.

The Lemon Seller

This sculpture in the gardens of the Palais Carnoles is called La Limounaire, by Jacqueline Verdini. Limounaire is a Mentonnais word that means the lemon seller.

Menton - 150 years of being French

Yesterday was an important day in Menton - the 150th anniversary of the day Menton chose to attach itself to France.

The Marseillaise was sung five times!

In 1346, Menton was under the ownership of Charles Grimaldi, Lord of Monaco. From hence, Menton’s history became intertwined with that of the Principality of Monaco. In 1848, Menton broke away from the Principality and proclaimed itself a free city under the protection of the King of Piedmont Sardinia. Menton chose to become part of France in 1861 and Charles III of Monaco released all rights of the city to Emperor Napoléon III. Menton became part of the Alpes-Maritimes department of France.

The monument is known as the 'Statue of the Attachment.'

Hier était un jour important - celui qui a été choisi pour commémorer les 150 ans du rattachement de Menton à la France.

La Marseillaise a été chantée cinq fois!

En 1346, Menton est la propriété de Charles Grimaldi, seigneur de Monaco. Dès lors, l'histoire de Menton devint étroitement liée à celle de la Principauté de Monaco. En 1848, Menton se détacha de la Principauté et se proclama ville libre sous la protection du roi de Piémont Sardaigne. En 1861, Menton choisit d'être rattachée à la France et Charles III de Monaco céda tous les droits de la ville à l'empereur Napoléon III.Depuis, Menton fait partie du département français des
Alpes-Maritimes.

Le monument est connu sous le nom «statue du rattachement".

The Watchman by Nicolas Lavarenne

This poor man has been stuck up a pole in the gardens of the Palais Carnoles for as long as I can remember. He's called Le Grand Guetteur (The Tall Watchman) by the sculptor, Nicolas Lavarenne (see video) He represents a man in medieval times who acted as watchman in the defence of his hilltop village.

Depuis aussi longtemps que je me souvienne,ce pauvre homme est perché sur un poteau dans les jardins du Palais Carnolès. On l'appelle Le Grand Guetteur, oeuvre du sculpteur Nicolas Lavarenne (voir video). Il représente un homme du Moyen Age qui occupe la fonction de guetteur pour assurer la défense de son village perché.

As Cold as Stone

Sunshine, shadows and as cold as stone. The nude in the Jardin Boives looks as if she's waiting for the warmer weather as are we.

This rather strange sculpture is to be found in the gardens of the Palais Carnoles in Menton.

It's called 'Question d'Arome' (Question of Aroma) and was created by the sculptor, Sacha Sosno in 1996. Click on the link to read about this well known local artist.

The Couple

This sculpture stands in the gardens of the Palais Carnoles, Menton's Museum of Fine Art. It's called Couple and was sculpted in 1987 by Robert Juvin, a sculptor who fought with the resistance in the war and was later awarded the Croix de Guerre.
