Sudanese Migrants at the Menton border

This is the Italian/French border at Menton and I'm on the Italian side, which is where I took the photo you saw yesterday of  children playing in a rock pool.Menton is in the distance.

These guys are all from Sudan, living on the rocks in the background.  There is now a heavy police presence designed to stop any of these guys crossing into France although it would seem some of them are making it across at night.   Happily, there are many great people in Menton, including my friend, Anne Batt,  who bring provisions, bedding, water, etc each day.  The Red Cross was here at the beginning.

I chatted with a guy from Eritrea who works for Medecins du Monde - he was walking around with his camera and was happy to translate as none of the Sudanese guys spoke French and a couple spoke only a few words of English.  He told me there are around 40 to 70 migrants living here on the border  (there were more) but in Ventimiglia there are 250.  And in all of Italy, it's unimaginable.

Let's hope these guys find a country willing to give them papers and a new life.

Ceci est la frontière italo-française à Menton et je me trouve du côté italien d' où j'ai pris la photo des enfants jouant dans une mare entre les rochers que vous avez vue hier. Au loin, Menton. 

Ces hommes viennent tous du Soudan et vivent sur les rochers à l'arrière-plan. Il y a maintenant une lourde présence policière chargée d'arrêter n'importe lequel de ces hommes essayant de rentrer en France bien qu'il semble que certains d'entre eux le font pendant la nuit. Heureusement, il y a beaucoup de personnes formidables à Menton, y compris mon amie Anne Batt, qui leur  apportent chaque jour des provisions de nourriture, de la literie, de l'eau etc. Certainement la Croix-Rouge était ici au debut.

J'ai bavardé avec un jeune homme de l'Érythrée qui travaille pour Médecins du Monde - il se promenait avec son appareil photo et était heureux de traduire car aucun des hommes soudanais ne parle le français , un couple seulement  a prononcé quelques mots d'anglais. Il m'a dit qu'il y a autour de 40 à 70 migrants vivant ici à la frontière (il y avait plus) mais à Vintimille, il en  y a 250. Et dans toute l' Italie, c'est inimaginable.

Espérons que ces hommes trouvent un pays désirant leur donner des papiers et une nouvelle vie.

Mais par la grâce de Dieu ... comme nous avons de la  chance!

What child doesn't enjoy playing in a rock pool?  These rocks are at Balzi Rossi on the French/Italian frontier.

Quel enfant n'aime pas jouer dans une mare entre les rochers ? Ces rochers s'appellent les Balzi Rossi à la frontière franco-italienne.

Balzi Rossi - Museum and beach

On the left, part of the Balzi Rossi Museum of Prehistory and behind that, you'll find the caves (well worth a visit) - ahead the beach. The museum houses extraordinary displays of a prehistoric Mediterranean. Diggings began in the second half of the 19th century as well as in 1928 and during the post-war period fossils of great importance were discovered, including late Paleolithic human burials, fossils of elephants, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, reindeer, and groundhogs.

À gauche, une  partie du Musée de la Préhistoire de Balzi Rossi, derrière, on trouve  les grottes  (valant bien une visite) et  en avant, la plage. Le musée expose d'extraordinaires collections de la Méditerranée préhistorique. Les recherches ont commencé à la deuxième moitié du 19ème siècle aussi bien qu'en 1928 et pendant le période de l'après-guerre.  Des fossiles de très grande importance ont été découverts, ainsi que des sépultures humaines du Paléolithique, des fossiles d'éléphants, d'hippopotames, de rhinocéros, de rennes et des marmottes d'Amérique.
