78th Fete du Citron - the Yorkshire Volunteers Band

I nearly fell over when I saw this band who could be nothing but British. This is the Yorkshire Volunteers Band who can trace its history back to 1860 when it was formed as a Volunteer Corps in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Today the band forms an integral part of the Yorkshire Volunteers Regimental Association, performing throughout the UK and Europe in both concert and marching band formations. It was great to see them at the Fete de Citron and I can tell you they were very well received by the crowd of over 25,000. The Director of Music, Major J Boden (photo below), explained to me that some members of the band are teachers and because it is term time, they were unable to attend so most of the musicians seen today are retirees.

J'ai été très surprise quand j'ai vu cette fanfare qui ne pouvait venir que de Grande Bretagne. Ce sont le Yorkshire Volunteers Band dont on peut retracer l'histoire jusqu'à 1860 quand elle a été créée comme un corps de bénévoles de Leeds, West Yorkshire. Aujourd'hui, le groupe fait partie intégrante de l'Association des bénévoles du régiment du Yorkshire, se produisant au Royaume-Uni et en Europe aussi bien en concert qu'en défilés en fanfare. C'était génial de les voir à la Fête de Citron et je peux vous dire qu'ils ont été très bien accueillis par une foule de plus de 25.000 personnes. Le directeur musical, Major J. Boden, (photo ci-dessous) m'a expliqué que certains membres de la bande sont des professeurs et comme on est en période scolaire, ils n'ont pas pu participer. Aussi, la plupart des musiciens présents aujourd'hui sont des retraités.

Along with the decorated floats there is music: marching bands, jazz, rock - it's all there.

The reflection of the palm tree in the tuba seems just right for Menton!

78th Fete du Citron - the She-Wolf of Rome

The famous Capitoline Wolf of Rome, suckling the twins, Romulus and Remus. This seems to me a fabulous representation of the celebrated bronze, but this time in oranges and lemons. Probably my favourite of all the floats this year.

Today is the Centenary of International Women's Day. To mark the day here's a little girl, full of joie de vivre after a day at the Fete du Citron - a woman in the making. Let's hope she lives a life of courage and one in which she can fulfil her potential. If she maintains the joy she shows today, I feel sure she will.

Aujourd'hui, c'est le centenaire de la Journée Mondiale de la Femme. Pour marquer cette journée voici une petite fille, pleine de joie de vivre après une journée à la Fête du Citron - une femme en devenir. Espérons qu'elle mènera une vie de courage dans laquelle elle pourra réaliser son potentiel. Si elle garde la joie qu'elle montre aujourd'hui, je suis sûre qu'elle y parviendra.

78th Fete du Citron - Lady in Red

There is a Corso (parade) each Sunday of the Fete du Citron. The festival lasts for three weeks. I missed the first one, didn't go to the second one because the weather was terrible but yesterday - the last Corso - the weather was glorious and the crowds were out in force.

How does this performer walk on those stilts? Isn't she fabulous!

Chaque dimanche pendant la Fête du Citron qui dure trois semaines, il y a un Corso. J'ai raté le premier, je ne suis pas allée au second à cause du mauvais temps , mais hier - pour le dernier Corso de la saison - le temps était radieux et la foule nombreuse.

Comment cet artiste marche-t-elle sur ces échasses? Elle est fabuleuse n'est-ce pas!

78th Fete du Citron - the Students' Art Work

In the Jardin Bioves, alongside the massive displays, there is a small exhibition of art work by students at the Ecole Municipale des Arts
Plastiques in Menton. All follow the subject of this year's theme for the festival - Ancient Civilisations. Nice, aren't they?

Dans le Jardin Biovès, à côté des grands motifs , il y a une petite exposition d'oeuvres réalisées par des étudiants de l'Ecole Municipale d' Arts Plastiques de Menton. Tous ont travaillé sur le thème de la fête de cette année- les 'Grandes Civilisations'. C'est réussi, n'est-ce pas?

78th Fete du Citron - the Hanging Gardens of Babylon

When you walk into the Jardin Bioves the first display you see is the Roman Atrium which leads into the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Suddenly you are in another world, albeit made of lemons and oranges.

Lorsque vous entrez dans le Jardin Biovès le premier motif que vous voyez est l'atrium romain qui mène dans les jardins suspendus de Babylone. Tout à coup, vous êtes dans un autre monde, lequel est fait de citrons et d'oranges.

78th Fete du Citron - Perseus and the Gorgon, Medusa

In Greek mythology, the hero Perseus killed the gorgon Medusa, whose visage was so terrible that all who looked on her were turned to stone.

78th Fete du Citron - the Pigeon and the Rotten Lemon

All day long, the municipal gardeners replace any lemons or oranges that are starting to deteriorate. The displays are kept in immaculate condition. However, this rotted lemon was probably too high for anyone to notice - pigeon height, in fact!

Toute la journée, les jardiniers municipaux remplacent les citrons ou les oranges qui commencent à pourrir. Les motifs sont ainsi conservés dans un état impeccable. Toutefois, ce citron pourri était probablement trop élevé pour être enlevé par quelqu'un - si ce n'est par un pigeon en fait!

78th Fete du Citron - the Sphinx

The Sphinx represents another of the 'Grandes Civilisations' - that of ancient Egypt. This is the largest of the displays in the Jardin Bioves.

The oranges and lemons, by the way, are sold off at the end of the festival and made into jams, wine and liqueurs.

Le Sphinx représente une autre des " Grandes Civilisations" - celle de l'Egypte ancienne. C'est le plus grand motif dans le Jardin Biovès.

Les oranges et les citrons, soit dit en passant, sont vendus à la fin du festival pour la préparation de confitures, vins et liqueurs.

Mimosa

A day's break from the Fete de Citron for the usual Theme Day which this month is 'My favorite part of town.'

There is so much beauty in Menton that it's almost impossible to choose. The Mediterranean, the market, the cafes and bars, the mountains, the hill villages. If I had to choose though it would be the iconic Old Town of Menton or one of the medieval villages, such as Gorbio, where I live.

So here's a tiny ruelle in Gorbio village with one of the many mimosa trees in bloom. In the smaller photo, I'm re-posting one of my favourite shots of Menton's Old Town - the colours of the south.

Pour l'habituelle journée thématique du mois, on fait une pause avec la Fête de Citron. Ce mois-ci le thème est: «Ma partie préférée de la ville."

Il y a tant de beautés à Menton qu'il est presque impossible de choisir. La Méditerranée, le marché, les cafés et les bars, les montagnes, les villages perchés. Si je devais choisir parmi elles ce serait l'emblématique Vieille Ville de Menton ou l'un des villages médiévaux tels que Gorbio, où je vis.

Alors voici une petite ruelle du village de Gorbio avec l'un des nombreuse mimosas en fleurs. Dans la petite photo, je publie de nouveau une de mes photos préférées de la vieille ville de Menton - les couleurs du sud.

78th Fete du Citron - At the Foot of the Sphinx

Many families pose their children in front of one particular display - the largest in the Jardin Bioves. Behind this enchanting child is part of the display's foot so you can imagine the size. Do come back on Wednesday and see it.

I intended photographing the Corso yesterday - the parade - but we had rain, cold and wind. Perhaps next Sunday...

De nombreuses familles font poser leurs enfants en face ce motif particulier - le plus grand du Jardin Biovès. Derrière cette charmante enfant on voit une partie du pied de ce motif dont vous pouvez ainsi imaginer la taille. Vous pourrez le voir mercredi en entier.

Hier, je voulais photographier le Corso et son défilé , mais nous avons eu de la pluie, du froid et du vent. Peut-être dimanche prochain ...

78th Fete du Citron - the 5000 Euro Orange Tree

Alongside all the amazing displays in the Jardin Bioves, you'll find oranges and lemons for sale - and orange and lemon trees too. How about this one for 5000 euros. It's a mature tree and perhaps a rare variety but that's a lotta money...

Que pensez vous de celui-ci pour 5000 euros? C'est un arbre à maturité et peut-être d'une variété rare, mais c'est beaucoup de l'argent...

78th Fete du Citron - the Trojan Horse

The Trojan Horse - made of oranges and lemons. What adds to the fun is that as you walk around, each exhibit has an appropriate sound track. For the Trojan Horse, for example, you hear marching soldiers - or perhaps it's the clip-clop of horses' hooves.

Here we go again!

Regular visitors to Menton Daily Photo will know that Menton celebrates its most famous festival at this time of year - the Lemon Festival. This year is the 78th year of its existence, the town is crowded and it takes half an hour to find a car parking place but that's normal and we are all used to it.

This year the theme is 'Les Grande Civilisations' and over the next week or so we'll look at some of the displays, visit the Corso (the parade) and generally have a jolly good time.

This photo shows you how the lemons and oranges are attached to a display. And in the small photo - Pre-Columbian Civilisations.

Menton isn't known as the lemon capital of France for nothing. Note the orange tree in the background of the Jardin Bioves. Many of the streets in Menton are lined with orange trees.

Voilà, ça recommence!

Les fidèles visiteurs de Menton Daily Photo savent que c'est la période de l'année où se déroule la plus célèbre fête de Menton: la Fête du Citron. Cette année pour sa 78e édition, la ville est envahie de visiteurs et il faut une demi-heure pour trouver une place de parking.C'est ainsi tous les ans et nous y sommes tous habitués.

Le thème de cette année est «Les Grande civilisations " et au cours des deux prochaines semaines nous allons admirer certains des motifs de l'exposition,nous suivrons le Corso où l'ambiance est généralement très joyeuse.

Cette photo vous montre comment les citrons et les oranges sont attachés sur le motif. Et dans la petite photo - les Civilisations Précolombiennes.


Ce n'est pas pour rien que Menton est connue en France comme la capitale du citron. Remarquez l'oranger dans le fond du Jardin Biovès - la plupart des rues de la ville sont bordées d'orangers.
