Vernissage in the Village - Michel Houssin

Each summer, the Mayor of Gorbio invites an artist to exhibit at the Chateau alongside the permanent Collection Raza-Mongillat. It was during a stay in Avignon that our mayor, Monsieur Isnard, discovered the work of artist Michel Houssin who has devoted the past 30 years to the art of drawing. He believes that colour camouflages reality. The exhibition is called Humanity and interestingly the portraits all have numbers - the subject's social security number. In the main photo, the artist talks about his work.

Chaque été, le maire de Gorbio invite un artiste à exposer dans la Tour Lascaris à côté de la Collection permanente Raza-Mongillat. C'est lors d'un séjour en Avignon que notre maire, M. Isnard, a découvert le travail de l'artiste Michel Houssin, qui a consacré ses trente dernières années à l'art du dessin. Il pense que la couleur camoufle la réalité. L'exposition est appelée "l'Humanité" et d'une façon intéressante les portraits portent tousdes numéros - numéro de sécurité sociale de la personne. Sur la photo principale, l'artiste parle de son travail.

The Hat Man is Back

Summer must be here as the hat man is back. He walks along the beaches all summer long - selling his hats.

It's unbelievably hot at the moment. Hot and humid and we are all complaining... yes I know, I know...

Menton - 150 years of being French

Yesterday was an important day in Menton - the 150th anniversary of the day Menton chose to attach itself to France.

The Marseillaise was sung five times!

In 1346, Menton was under the ownership of Charles Grimaldi, Lord of Monaco. From hence, Menton’s history became intertwined with that of the Principality of Monaco. In 1848, Menton broke away from the Principality and proclaimed itself a free city under the protection of the King of Piedmont Sardinia. Menton chose to become part of France in 1861 and Charles III of Monaco released all rights of the city to Emperor Napoléon III. Menton became part of the Alpes-Maritimes department of France.

The monument is known as the 'Statue of the Attachment.'

Hier était un jour important - celui qui a été choisi pour commémorer les 150 ans du rattachement de Menton à la France.

La Marseillaise a été chantée cinq fois!

En 1346, Menton est la propriété de Charles Grimaldi, seigneur de Monaco. Dès lors, l'histoire de Menton devint étroitement liée à celle de la Principauté de Monaco. En 1848, Menton se détacha de la Principauté et se proclama ville libre sous la protection du roi de Piémont Sardaigne. En 1861, Menton choisit d'être rattachée à la France et Charles III de Monaco céda tous les droits de la ville à l'empereur Napoléon III.Depuis, Menton fait partie du département français des
Alpes-Maritimes.

Le monument est connu sous le nom «statue du rattachement".

The Watchman by Nicolas Lavarenne

This poor man has been stuck up a pole in the gardens of the Palais Carnoles for as long as I can remember. He's called Le Grand Guetteur (The Tall Watchman) by the sculptor, Nicolas Lavarenne (see video) He represents a man in medieval times who acted as watchman in the defence of his hilltop village.

Depuis aussi longtemps que je me souvienne,ce pauvre homme est perché sur un poteau dans les jardins du Palais Carnolès. On l'appelle Le Grand Guetteur, oeuvre du sculpteur Nicolas Lavarenne (voir video). Il représente un homme du Moyen Age qui occupe la fonction de guetteur pour assurer la défense de son village perché.

No Man's Land

This is the French side of the frontier between France and Italy where normally there are no police. It had been completely open, except on Fridays when the police try to catch people who've bought counterfeit handbags in the markets of Ventimiglia - I gather that trade has now moved to San Remo.

Now, though, things have changed and every day you'll find French police stopping cars - and people - in an attempt to prevent Tunisian refugees entering France.

Voici le côté français de la frontière entre la France et l'Italie, là où normalement, il n'y a plus de poste de police. Le passage de la frontière est librement ouvert à part le vendredi où la douane recherche les gens qui ont acheté des sacs à main et autres contrefaçons sur le marché de Vintimille - Il semble d'ailleurs que ces commerces illicites se trouvent maintenant à San Remo.

Mais actuellement, les choses ont changé et tous les jours à la frontière, la police française arrête des voitures - et des gens - pour empêcher les réfugiés tunisiens qui tentent de rentrer en France.

Last night's dinner...

You are looking at last night's dinner - very good it was too. These guys make a giant paella outside Menton's market every Tuesday. They start cooking early in the morning and by around 10.30h or 11.00h it's ready and you'll have to join a queue to buy it. On other days they are in other markets in the region.

Voici mon dîner d'hier soir - c'était aussi très bon. Ces gars-là font une paella géante à l'extérieur du marché de Menton tous les mardis. Ils commencent la cuisson tôt le matin et vers 10h30 - 11h00 c' est prêt . Vous n'avez plus qu'à vous joindre à la file d'attente pour acheter votre part. Les autres jours, ils sont dans d'autres marchés dans la région.

A Little Light and Air

This is for Julie from Sydney Eye, who asked about shutters such as these - where you can open a small 'window' within the shutter to let in a little light and air, yet keep the rest closed to keep out the hot Mediterranean sun.

We've left the Old Town of Ventimiglia and are now at the main market.

It's time to buy your tomato plants and look how helpful it is when the vendor places a ripe tomato amongst the young plants - at least then you won't get a surprise. The purple one is an aubergine, of course - eggplant across the pond.

Il est temps d'acheter vos plants de tomates et vous apprécierez la bonne idée du vendeur qui a pendu une tomate mûre correspondant à chaque jeune plant - ainsi, vous n'aurez pas de surprise à la récolte. Le fruit violet est une aubergine bien sûr -'eggplant' aux Etats Unis.
