Some followers of this blog already know that it is my neighbour and friend, Agnès, who corrects the French translations every day. Agnès is more than a neighbour, she is a dear friend and so was her mother, Rose. This is my small tribute to Rose who passed away on November 25th.
For years, before Agnes retired, I used to walk down the track most days to sit and chat with Rose. She would correct my French and rap my knuckles when I got something wrong. For me, an English person in a foreign country, to be accepted almost as family by a neighbour - well I can't begin to tell you how much it meant. Rose would sometimes call me her second daughter (we didn't mention that she was barely old enough for that!) She'd talk often about her beloved Algeria where she was born to Italian parents. It was in 1962 that she, her husband and daughter Agnès, then aged 13, had to leave Algeria when it became independent of France. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to leave a village and country you love so much. There was a large photograph of her village on the wall and she loved to talk about her childhood there.
Most of all though I remember Rose's peals of laughter. She'd giggle like a child. She had such a wonderful childlike joy in life. During this last year, she'd been ill and her health increasingly declined, but sometimes the old humour would sparkle through. Happily and sadly she's at peace now.
My thoughts are with Agnès, her son Nicolas and daughter Laurence, and grandchild, little Clara. I grieve with you and will miss Rose forever.

Certains lecteurs de ce blog savent déjà que c'est ma voisine et amie, Agnès, qui corrige les traductions en français tous les jours. Agnès est plus qu'une voisine, elle est une amie chère comme l'était aussi sa mère, Rose. C'est mon petit hommage à Rose, qui est nous a quittés le 25 Novembre dernier.
Pendant des années, avant la retraite d'Agnès, j'avais l'habitude de descendre souvent sur le petit chemin et de m'asseoir pour discuter avec Rose. Elle corrigeait mon français et me tapait sur les doigts quand il m'arrivait de me tromper. Pour moi, anglaise en pays étranger, être acceptée presque comme de la famille par une voisine - je vous laisse imaginer ce que cela signifiait. Rose m'appelait parfois sa deuxième fille (disons qu'elle était à peine assez âgée pour ça!) Elle parlait souvent de son Algérie bien-aimée, là où elle était née de parents italiens. C'est en 1962 qu'elle, son mari et sa fille Agnès, alors âgée de 13 ans, avaient dû quitter l'Algérie devenue indépendante de la France. Je ne peux pas imaginer comme il a du être difficile de quitter le village et le pays que l'on aime tant. Il y avait une grande photographie de son village sur un mur et elle aimait à parler de son enfance là-bas.
Je me souviens surtout des éclats de rire de Rose. Elle avait le rire et la merveilleuse joie de vivre d'une enfant. Dans la dernière année, elle était malade et son état de santé s'est dégradé peu à peu mais parfois son humour ressurgissait. Heureusement mais tristement elle est en paix maintenant.
Mes pensées sont avec Agnès, son fils Nicolas, sa fille Laurence, et Clara sa petite-fille. Je pleure avec vous et Rose me manquera pour toujours.

Today is our last day at PhotoMenton. There's much more to see but I think it's time to see what else is happening in Menton and the villages.
But for those of you interested, if you click you will find photos of every photographers' stand.
And as some of you have kindly asked, mine is shown below. I'm pleased enough with some of the photos but I didn't pay enough attention to a real theme. My theme, of course, was Menton and the villages but there is too much going on - performers, architectural details, some black and white, some colour, some vertical, some horizontal and probably too many! Not good! I learned a big lesson this year. I need a more specific theme and next year I'll try and get it right. Everyone at PhotoMenton has been absolutely wonderful - all the other photographers are so encouraging, so generous in their comments, so helpful with valuable advice and answering my endless questions. I've made new and valued friends.
Thankyou so much to PhotoMenton - to Maxime, Magali, Philippe, Yvon, Simone, Patrick, Marc and Jeannine and all the team. Can't wait for next year!

Aujourd'hui, c'est notre dernier jour à PhotoMenton. Il y aurait encore beaucoup à voir mais je pense qu'il est temps de s'intéresser à nouveau à ce qui se passe dans Menton et les villages voisins.
Mais pour ceux d'entre vous qui le souhaitent, cliquez et vous trouverez des photos des stands de tous les photographes. Et comme certains me l'ont gentiment demandé, le mien est indiqué ci-dessous. Je suis plutôt satisfaite de certaines de mes photos car je n'avais pas de thème suffisamment défini.Bien sûr, mon thème était Menton et ses villages, mais il y avait trop de choses - des artistes, des détails architecturaux, certains en noir et blanc, d'autres en couleurs, certains verticaux, certains horizontaux et probablement trop nombreux ! Ce n'était pas bon! Cette année, j'ai donc pris une grande leçon. J'ai besoin de choisir un thème plus précis et l'an prochain j' essayerai de mieux faire les choses. A PhotoMenton, tout le monde a été absolument merveilleux - tous les autres photographes sont très encourageants, très généreux dans leurs commentaires et si utiles grâce à leurs précieux conseils et leurs réponses à mes questions sans fin. J'ai fait la connaissance d'amis nouveaux et précieux.
Merci beaucoup à PhotoMenton - à Maxime, Magali, Philippe, Yvon, Simone, Patrick, Marc et Jeannine et toute l'équipe. Vivement l'année prochaine !

There was some beautiful nude photography at the exhibition but during the weekdays when the school children visited, these were covered by giant posters. As you see, it didn't stop some of the older students and a visiting adult couple finding them!

Quelques belles photographies de nus se trouvaient à l'exposition , mais pendant la semaine, alors que les enfants des écoles étaient en visite, elles étaient recouvertes par des posters géants. Comme vous le voyez, cela n'a pas empêché certains des étudiants les plus âgés ainsi qu'un couple de visiteurs adultes de les admirer !

During the week, the exhibition was invaded by hundreds of school children from Menton and Roquebrune. The young were seated on the floor and the photos explained to them. The older students had been given tasks to find photographs that illustrated 10 different subjects
headings. They then had to photograph the photograph.

Durant la semaine, l'exposition a été envahie par des centaines d'écoliers de Menton et Roquebrune. Les jeunes étaient assis par terre et les photos leur étaient commentées. Les élèves plus âgés étaient chargés de trouver des photographies illustrant dix thèmes différents qu'ils devaient ensuite photographier.

There was, of course, lots of black and white photography - lots of FABULOUS black and white photography. Indeed, the winner of the public vote, Timothée Aspert, showed beautiful black and white street photography.
How it works, in terms of the vote, is that visitors pay 3 euros to enter the exhibition and when they leave they vote for the exhibitor whose photos they like best.
The main photo shows one of Timothée's beautiful shots. In the smaller pic, we see a stunning landscape by Michel Lecocq and finally, a wonderful old man by Laurent Roch. And for an extra treat, we have a truly great five minute video by Laurent called Street Photography. Sit back, turn on the sound and enjoy...

Il y avait, bien sûr, beaucoup de photographies en noir et blanc - beaucoup de FABULEUSES photographies. En effet, le gagnant du vote du public, Timothée Aspert, a exposé de belles photographies de la rue en noir et blanc.
Comment voter? En entrant à l'exposition, chaque visiteur paie 3 euros et en repartant, il peut voter, avec le bulletin remis à l'entrée, pour l'exposant dont il a préféré les photos.
La photo principale montre une des belles prises de Timothée. Dans la petite image, nous voyons un paysage époustouflant par Michel Lecocq et enfin, un vieil homme merveilleux photographié par Laurent Roch. Et comme cadeau supplémentaire, nous avons une vidéo vraiment étonnante de cinq minutes par Laurent, appelée Street Photography. Asseyez-vous, mettez le son et profitez... 
Some people look and see the photos. Others look but their eyes are glazed. This visitor to PhotoMenton is really concentrating and absorbing what she sees.

There are as many styles of photos and there are photographers. Here are just three for today. The first is the work of Philippe Refalo who presents beautiful panoramas taken in Grasse, famous for its perfume. I've never seen vertical panoramas before and these attracted a lot of attention. He was third in the Prix du Public.
Below is the display of Michelle Musard called 'Illusions of the Palais Royale'. Not only are the photos so charming but each is presented in an old frame that is so right for the subject.
And finally, a photo from talented photographer, Philippe Chiodi's and one of his beautiful reflections.

Il y a autant de styles de photos qu'il y a de photographes. En voici seulement trois pour aujourd'hui. Le premier est l'oeuvre de Philippe Refalo qui présente de belles vues de Grasse, ville célèbre pour ses parfums. Je n'avais jamais vu de panoramas verticaux avant ceux-ci qui ont attiré beaucoup d'attention. Il a gagné troisieme dans le Prix du Public.
Ci-dessous l'affichage de Michelle Musard appelé "Illusions du Palais Royal." Non seulement les photos sont très captivantes, mais en plus chacune est présentée dans un vieux cadre qui est excellent pour le sujet.

This exhibitor, Stefano Bassetti, has a charming idea. He has posted dozens of small photos and then invited the public to take any photo they like, write a few words on a notelet and post it in place of the photo. Publicity for him, of course, as his name is on the photo and a nice memento for the person who took it.

Il a affiché des dizaines de petites photos et a ensuite invité le public à en prendre une qu'ils aiment, d'écrire quelques mots sur une petite carte et de l'afficher à la place de la photo. C'est ainsi une publicité pour lui puisque son nom est sur la photo et un souvenir agréable pour la personne qui l'a prise.
Who knew that the well-known singer, Charles Aznavour was such a good photographer? He was the honoured invitee at PhotoMenton this year. Here are a few of his photos.

One of the many great things that takes place is the day of the Photo Marathon. You arrive with your camera and an empty memory card - you can do this alone or with a partner but it's more fun with a partner. This year there were 50 teams. You are given three subjects. Here is Maxime Pérégrini, the talented photographer and President of PhotoMenton informing the photographers that the subjects this year are 'Outside the Cocteau Museum', 'Reflections' and 'Humour.' Once you've taken the photos and this can take you several hours you go back to the exhibition, the photos on the card are uploaded and you tell the organiser which three photos you wish to enter in the competition, for which, by the way, there are great prizes like super-duper printers. You are, of course, not allowed to make any changes to the photos. You then wait for the winners to be announced at the end of the exhibition. I'll let you know who wins, of course and show you the photos.
The Association PhotoMenton's main aim is to promote photography and through this, to support l'ONG HAMAP. HAMAP is a charity working to stop land mines. To support this charity, PhotoMenton has held a photography festival each November in Menton since 2005. Each year, PhotoMenton offers over 120 photographers, mostly amateurs, a unique opportunity to exhibit in a prestigious venue: the Palais de l'Europe. In 2010, PhotoMenton raised 12,000 euros for HAMAP.

Un des moments importants de l'exposition est le jour du Marathon Photo. Il faut arriver avec votre appareil photo et une carte mémoire vide. Vous pouvez le faire seul ou avec un partenaire ce qui est plus amusant. Ils étaient une cinquantaine d'équipes. On donne trois thèmes. Voici Maxime Pérégrini, le photograph de talent et Président de PhotoMenton qui informe les photographes sur les thèmes de cette année: "L'extérieur du Musée Cocteau", "Réflexions" et "Humour". Une fois les photos prises, et cela peut vous prendre plusieurs heures, vous revenez à l'exposition. Les photos de la carte sont téléchargées et parmi elles, vous en choisissez trois que vous indiquez à l'organisateur pour qu'elles entrent dans la compétition, compétition pour laquelle, soit dit en passant, il y a des grands prix comme de supers imprimantes. Vous n'avez bien sûr, pas le droit d'apporter de modification aux photos. Vous devez ensuite attendre la proclamation des résultats qui a lieu à la fin de l'expo. Je vous ferai bien sûr, connaitre les lauréats dont je montrerai les photos.
L'association PhotoMenton a pour but essentiel la promotion de la photographie et le soutien de l'ONG HAMAP - la lutte contre le déminage. Pour soutenir HAMAP, l'association organise en novembre depuis 2005 un festival de la photographie à Menton. Chaque année, PhotoMenton offre à plus de 120 photographes, amateurs pour la plupart, l'occasion unique d'exposer dans un lieu prestigieux: le Palais de l'Europe. En 2010, PhotoMenton a permis de récolter 12000 euros pour HAMAP.
