Flamenco! - Gitane Chants in the Church

Gorbio's famous Flamenco festival started two nights ago. Before the paella, before the fabulous dancing, we listened to exquisite religious gitane chants in the church, which was packed with an appreciative audience. Those present included the celebrated singer, Luis de Almeria, along with Diego and Frasquita Contreras with Manuel Gomes on guitar.

Le célèbre festival de Flamenco a commencé il y a deux jours à Gorbio. Avant la paella et avant le fabuleux spectacle de danse , nous avons écouté, dans l'église, d' exquis chants religieux gitans  qui ont charmé un public admiratif.   Etaient présents le célèbre chanteur  Luis de Alméria,  Diego et Frasquita Contreras ainsi que Manuel Gomes à la guitare.

Jardin Botanique Exotique du Val Rahmeh

 Menton is famous for its gardens. This photo shows a corner of the villa at the Jardin Botanique Exotique du Val Rahmeh - one we've not yet visited.

The property was originally owned by the Monléon family. In 1905 it was bought by Lord Radcliffe, a former governor of Malta and was used to grow subtropical and tropical plants. Later it passed to Miss May Campbell, a rich English lady, and then to France's National Natural History Museum. It retains the air of an Arts and Crafts private garden.

Menton est célèbre pour ses jardins. Cette photo montre un coin de la villa du Jardin Botanique Exotique du Val Rahmeh - celui que nous n'avons pas encore visité.

La propriété appartenait initialement à la famille de Monléon. En 1905, elle a été rachetée par Lord Radcliffe, ancien gouverneur de Malte et fut utilisée pour la culture de plantes tropicales et subtropicales. Plus tard, elle passa à Miss May Campbell, une riche dame anglaise, puis au Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle de France. Elle conserve l'aspect d'un jardin privé de style du 'Arts et Artisanat.'

Lotus

The Lotus flower grows in several of Menton's famous gardens. These pics were taken in the Serre de la Madone.

The sacred Lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, is an important spiritual symbol in Eastern religions. It represents purity, divine wisdom, and the individual's progress from the lowest to the highest state of consciousness.

All parts of the lotus are edible. Apparently the seeds, which can be eaten raw or cooked, have a chestnut-like flavour. The lotus grows in water and some people think it's a type of waterlily but it isn't? There is no relation to the water lily.

Look at the extraordinary circular seed pods. Look at the light and shade created by the beautiful leaves. And then look at the glorious flower. Isn't it a wonder ...

La fleur de lotus pousse dans plusieurs célèbres jardins de Menton . Ces photos ont été prises dans la Serre de la Madone.

Le Lotus sacré, Nelumbo nucifera, est un symbole spirituel important dans les religions orientales. Il représente la pureté, la sagesse divine, et les progrès de l'individu du plus bas au plus haut niveau ​​de conscience. 

Toutes les parties du lotus sont comestibles. Apparemment, les graines, qui peuvent être mangées crues ou cuites, ont une saveur de châtaigne. Leaving the Port of Garavan

A couple of days ago I spent a day at sea on a friend's boat. We left the Port of Garavan in Menton and motored along the coast, past Monaco to Plage Mala at Cap d'Ail, where we tied up alongside another friend's boat and lunched and swam off the back of the boat.  More on Monte Carlo Daily Photo eventually.

Meanwhile, here's what the Port of Garavan looks like as you are about to round the lighthouse.  In the distance on the left, you can just see the Old Town of Menton.

Il y a deux jours,  j'ai passé une journée à la mer sur le bateau d'un ami. Nous avons quitté le port de Garavan à Menton et en naviguant le long de la côte, nous sommes passés à Monaco, et arrivés à la Plage Mala à Cap d'Ail où nous nous sommes amarrés à côté du bateau d'un autre ami .Nous avons
déjeuné et nagé à l'arrière du bateau. Cette petite histoire sera sur le Monte Carlo Daily Photo finalement.

Pendant ce temps, voici  à quoi ressemble le port de Garavan lorsque que vous êtes sur le point de dépasser le phare.Au loin sur la gauche, vous pouvez juste voir la vieille ville de Menton.

Le Week-End Africain - the Adorable Child

Our last day at Le Weekend Africain. This adorable child who was happy to pose for a photo in such a relaxed and charming way. An old soul, I'm sure.

Notre dernier jour au Week-end Africain . Cette adorable enfant était heureuse de poser pour une photo de manière détendue et charmante. Une âme pleine de sagesse,  j'en suis sûre.

Le Week-End Africain - the Kora

This was absolutely my favourite instrument at the festival. It's called a 'kora.' The sound was just beautiful and the man who played it seemed such a beautiful sensitive soul.

It is a harp, lute-like instrument with a goat skin stretched over a large spherical gourd resonator. The neck of the instrument has about twenty to twenty-five strings that are very difficult to tune.   It produces a sound that is a combination of a harp, a Spanish guitar and a Kalimba (African thumb piano). Although some of the most famous kora players are from Mali and Guinea, the kora itself probably originated from Guinea-Bissau.

The kora harp has a tradition of possessing healing powers in African culture and many harp players are also soothsayers or healers.

Tomorrow - our last day at the Weekend Africain tomorrow.  So much else to show you --- summer is hot and crowded but with so many fabulous festivals to enjoy.

C'était incontestablement l'instrument que j'ai préféré au festival. On l'appelle un «kora».  Le son est tout simplement magnifique et l'homme qui en jouait paraissait avoir une  belle sensibilité d'âme.

Il s'agit d'une harpe, comme un luth avec une peau de chèvre tendue sur une grande gourde sphérique comme caisse de résonance. Le manche de l'instrument dispose d'environ 20 à 25 cordes qui sont très difficiles à régler. Il produit un son qui est la  combinaison d'une harpe, d' une guitare espagnole et d' une Kalimba (piano à pouce africain). Bien que certains des joueurs de kora les plus célèbres soient originaires du Mali et la Guinée, la kora elle-même est probablement originaire de la Guinée-Bissau.

La harpe kora a la réputation de posséder des pouvoirs de guérison dans la culture africaine et de nombreux joueurs de harpe sont aussi devins ou guérisseurs.

The girls went bonkers dancing, the audience responded and everyone had a great time. What amazed me is that the girl in braids is pregnant but at least she didn't do the splits like the other one.

Les filles se livrent à une danse folle, le public suit et c'est un grand moment pour tous. Ce qui m'a étonnée, c'est la jeune femme avec les tresses qui est enceinte, cependant elle n'a pas fait le grand écart comme l'autre danseuse.

Le Week-End Africain - the Slit Drums

These are wooden slit drums which made a beautiful sound. You can see in one of the small photos that the performer has carried the drum to the edge of the stage so he and it can be photographed.

Ce sont des tambours à fente en bois qui ont une belle sonorité. Vous pouvez voir dans l'une des petites photos que l'interprète a posé le tambour sur le bord de la scène et ainsi lui et l'instrument peuvent  être photographiés. 

Le Week-End Africain - Drum Beat

The drumming was sensational.  And so many different types of drum (djembé) too.  You can see how fast they are drumming - look at the guy's hands in the third photo!

Le djembé était  sensationnel. Et tellement de différents types de djembés aussi. Vous pouvez voir à quelle vitesse ils sont frappés - regardez les mains du gars dans la troisième photo!

Le Week-End Africain - the Singers and Dancers

At the Weekend Africain in Gorbio, the Place des Victoires vibrated to the fabulous sounds of Guinea, renowned for its percussion and its dance. The group, which is called Wamali Percussions, has quite a few guys but only two girls - and here they are singing. Later they danced, and how they danced! We'll see that another day.

Au Week-end Africain de Gorbio, la Place des Victoires a vibré aux rythmes fabuleux de la Guinée, réputés pour ses percussions et sa danse. Le groupe, qui se nomme Wamali Percussions, est composé de plusieurs  gars, mais seulement deux filles - et ici, elles chantent. Par la suite,  elles ont dansé, et de quelle façon! Nous le verrons un autre jour.

Le Week-End Africain - 'Yassa'

Our main course is Chicken Yassa, which is a celebrated Senegalese dish that has become popular throughout Western Africa. The chicken in marinated in lemon juice and spices and served with a spicy onion sauce and the rice we saw being cooked the other day.

Here we see the chicken being cooked on an open grill - note the spices sprinkled from a champagne bucket! Meanwhile plates are being filled with rice. Delicious!

Notre plat principal est de poulet Yassa, qui est un plat célèbre sénégalais qui est devenu populaire dans toute l'Afrique occidentale. Le poulet mariné dans du jus de citron et d'épices et servi avec une sauce à l'oignon et le riz épicé, nous avons vu en cours de cuisson, l'autre jour.

Ici, nous voyons le poulet qui  cuit sur un gril ouvert - notez les épices  répandues depuis un seau à champagne! Pendant ce temps les plats sont remplis avec du riz. Delicieux!

Le Week-End Africain - 'Bissap'

There's not a seat available in Place des Victories in Gorbio, although later, once dinner is over, more people will come in to see the performance.

Jugs of a delicious cold drink called 'bissap' are ready on the table. This is an infusion of hibiscus sepals, flavoured with mint and ginger.  It's said to have been the preferred drink of the Pharoahs. 
It was delicious.

Il n'y a pas de place disponible dans la Place des Victoires a Gorbio, bien que plus tard, une fois le dîner terminé, plus de gens viendront pour voir la performance.

Cruches d'une délicieuse boisson froide appelée «bissap» est prêt sur ​​la table. Il s'agit d'une infusion de sépales hibiscus, aromatisé à la menthe et le gingembre. Il est dit avoir été la boisson préférée des pharaons. C'était délicieux.

Le Week-End Africain - the Shoe and Dress stall

These two ladies had a wonderfully colourful stall at the Week-End Africain. They were selling Wara shoes, which are handmade by Senegalese artisans in Dakar and Senegal, with French leather and woven waxed cloth of Senegal and created in the context of fair trade. The clothes - the make is Bo Cosa - tunics that can be mixed and matched to create many different looks.

A massive thank you to the incredibly talented photographer Carla Coulson who mentioned Menton Daily Photo and Riviera Dogs on her website yesterday. Carla takes amazing fashion photos of women but has also published several inspirational books with mouthwatering photos, inlcuding Italian Joy, Paris Tango and Chasing a Dream.  Ces deux dames tiennent un stand merveilleusement coloré pendant le Week-End Africain. Elles vendent des chaussures Wara, qui sont faites par des artisans Sénégalais à Dakar au Sénégal, avec du cuir de France et du pagne tissé ou tissus Wax du Sénégal, dans la cadre du commerce équitable.
Les vêtements - de la marque  Bo Cosa - des tuniques qui peuvent être mélangées et combinées pour créer de nombreux looks différents.

Le Week-End Africain - Cooking the Rice

The African Weekend recently took place in the medieval village of Gorbio.  Last year, the music was from Burkina Faso.  This year it featured the music and the food of Senegal. These ladies are cooking a massive container of rice. Later, towards the end of the evening, some of these ladies got up on stage and danced for us - and they were great!

Le Week-End Africain a eu lieu récemment au village médiéval de Gorbio. L'année dernière, c'était de la musique du Burkina Faso. Cette année, les rythmes de la Guinée étaient à l'honneur. Dans une marmite géante, ces dames ont fait cuire du riz, prêt pour le repas sénégalais qui va nous être servi. Plus tard, vers la fin de la soirée, certaines de ces dames sont montées sur la scène et ont  dansé  pour nous - et elles étaient formidables!
