Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy - the Cross

The church service is over and the procession is making its way through the village.

It's not easy to manoeuvre this heavy cross.  It has to be lowered and carried at an angle to get through the archway but once through, it is returned to its upright position.

Ce n'est pas facile à manœuvrer cette lourde croix. Elle doit être abaissée et portée par un angle pour passer à travers la voûte mais ensuite, elle reprend sa position verticale.

Everyone has entered the church.  One adorable child, a glittering tiara in her hair has perhaps had enough of waiting ... but now the curé has arrived and the service can begin.

The ceremony concerns the Golden Apple.  The struggle between the two social orders, good and evi,l is represented by the crucifix and the sword.

Saint Barthélemy was a martyr. What is called the massacre of St. Bartholomew was a massacre of Protestants that took place in Paris on August 24, 1572, the Fete day of St. Bartholomew.  It continued for several days in the capital, and then extended to more than two dozen cities in the provinces in subsequent weeks.

For many years, history has decreed that King Charles IX and his mother, Catherine de Medici, were responsible for the massacre.  But opinion is divided on the exact role of the crown.  The view today is that only military chiefs of the clan were protesting, protected by royal order. On the morning of August 24, Charles IX ordered the immediate cessation of the killings, but overwhelmed by the zeal and fury of the people, he could not prevent it.  Whatever the truth, it doesn't sound a very happy story ...

Tout le monde est entré dans l'église. Une enfant adorable, un diadème étincelant dans ses cheveux en a peut-être  assez d'attendre ... mais voila  le curé qui arrive et le service peut commencer.

La cérémonie concerne le Pomme d'Or.  La lutte entre les deux ordres sociaux, le bien et le mal, est représentée par le crucifix et l'épée .

Saint-Barthélemy était un martyr.  Ce qu'on appelle le massacre de la Saint -Barthélemy a été le massacre des protestants qui a eu lieu à Paris le 24 Août 1572, le jour de la fête de la Saint-Barthélemy. Il s'est poursuivi pendant plusieurs jours dans la capitale, puis s'est étendu à plus de deux douzaines de villes de provinces au cours des semaines suivantes.

Pendant de nombreuses années, l'histoire a décrété que le roi Charles IX et sa mère, Catherine de Médicis, étaient responsables du massacre. Mais les avis sont partagés sur le rôle exact de la couronne. Le point de vue d'aujourd'hui, c'est que seuls les chefs militaires du clan ont agi, protégés par un arrêté royal. Dans la matinée du 24 Août, Charles IX ordonna l'arrêt immédiat des tueries, mais dépassé par le zèle et la fureur du peuple, il n'a rien  pu empêcher. Quelle que soit la vérité, ce n'est pas une histoire très glorieuse ...

Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy - the Golden Apple

It's time for the traditional offering of the 'Pomme d'Or' - the Golden Apple.  This is led by villagers of all ages and accompanied by musicians who will play in the church after the service. It's a medieval tradition when knights brought their offerings to the ecclesiastical authority.  Later, it represented the giving of money to the poor of the village and always the large possible apple was chosen. Nowadays studded with euros! How times do change ... but how wonderful that these traditions continue.

C'est le moment de  l' offrande traditionnelle de la « Pomme d'Or ».  Elle est animée par des villageois de tous âges et accompagnée par des musiciens qui joueront dans l'église après le service. C'est une tradition médiévale du temps où les chevaliers apportaient leurs offrandes à l'autorité ecclésiastique. Plus tard, cela représentait un don d'argent aux pauvres du village et on choisissait toujours la plus grosse des pommes. De nos jours, elle est garnie avec des euros! Comme les temps changent ... mais quelle merveille que ces traditions se poursuivent.

The curé says a few words prior to the Blessing of the Animals. Alongside him stand some of the Penitents Blancs and the Mayor of Gorbio village.

They are standing in front of Gorbio's famous elm tree planted in 1713.  Next year there will be a big celebration for its 300th birthday.

Ils sont debout devant le célèbre orme du village  planté en 1713.  L'année prochaine, il y aura une grande fête pour son 300e anniversaire.

Two of the beautiful horses who rode down to the village for the Blessing of the Animals.  It's so good to hear the clip-clop, clip-clop of the hooves on the ancient cobbles - you are immediately transported to times gone by.

At the Fête Patronale de la Saint-Barthélemy, the day starts with the Blessing of the Animals. Around 10h.30 the square slowly fills mostly with dogs and a few horses. Locals will tell you that in the old days you'd also see donkeys, sheep, goats and perhaps a cow.

Tomorrow we'll see the horses and after that we meet the curé who conducts the blessing along with the Pénitents Blancs (the White Penitents).

Lors de la Fête Patronale de la Saint -Barthélemy, la journée commence avec la bénédiction des animaux. Vers 10h.30,  la place se remplit lentement la plupart du temps avec des chiens et quelques chevaux. Les villageois vous  diront que dans l'ancien temps, vous auriez vu aussi des ânes, des moutons, des chèvres et peut-être une vache.

Certains des chiens qui sont sur cette photos sont à voir sur Riviera Dogs.

Demain, nous verrons les chevaux et après cela nous rencontrons le curé qui effectue la bénédiction ainsi que les Pénitents Blancs.

Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy - the Chickens

If you see a chicken strung up in a string bag on the end of a Medieval pole axe, then you know we are in Gorbio village for the Fête Patronale de la Saint-Barthélemy - the patron saint of Gorbio. The chickens (there are always two of them) represent an offering to God and in olden times, of course, the village priest would have been given them. Nowadays they return to their owners, and doubtless get an extra handful of grain for their dinner. Don't worry... they were fine.

Si vous voyez un poulet  dans un sac en filet suspendu à l'extrémité d'une perche médiévale, alors vous savez que vous êtes à la Fête Patronale de la Saint-Barthélemy au village de Gorbio - le saint patron de Gorbio. Les poulets (il y en a toujours deux) représentent une offrande à Dieu et dans les temps anciens, bien sûr, c'est le curé du village qui les aurait reçus. Aujourd'hui, ils reviennent à leurs propriétaires, et sans doute obtiennent une poignée supplémentaire de céréales pour leur dîner. Ne vous inquiétez pas, ils étaient bien traités ...

Val Rahmeh Garden - the Tree Echium

This is a plant that simply got too heavy to stand up, so it grew lying down.

It's a white form of the Tree Echium. (Echium pininana var. alba  'Snow Tower')  It's a hardy biennial that grows a large rosette of silver-grey leaves in the first year, and a very tall white flower spike up to 4.5 metres  high in the second year and flowers from June to September.

The smaller photo gives an idea of its size if you compare it to the bench or the path where it grows. Quite wonderful and extraordinary, don't you think?

Voici une plante tout simplement trop lourde pour rester debout et  qui s'est donc couchée.

C'est une espèce blanche de l' Echium en arbre  (Echium pininana var  Alba 'Snow Tower).  Il s'agit d'une bisannuelle rustique qui donne une grande rosette de feuilles gris argenté la première année, et ensuite une très grande hampe florale blanche pouvant atteindre jusqu'à 4,5 mètres de haut dans la deuxième année de floraison de Juin à Septembre.

La petite photo donne une idée de sa taille si on la compare au banc ou à l'emplacement où elle se développe.  C'est merveilleux et extraordinaire n'est-ce pas?

Val Rahmeh Garden - the Pergola

After Lord Percy Radcliff left the villa and garden of Val Rahmeh it was acquired, in 1957, by Miss May Campbell (1900-1982) and she increased the size of the garden by buying a second garden which is accessed by a bridge. In 1966, Miss Campbell sold the villa and garden to the State, who transferred it to the Ministry of National Education where it now houses a research centre specializing in Mediterranean flora. It's managed by the National Museum of Natural History and is known as Menton's Exotic Botanical Garden.

Après le départ de Lord Percy Radcliff de la villa et du jardin du Val Rahmeh, ceux-ci furent acquis par Miss May Campbell (1900-1982 ) en 1957. Elle  agrandit la propriété en achetant un second jardin auquel on accède par un pont. En 1966, Miss Campbell vendit la villa et le jardin à l'État, lequel les  transféra au ministère de l'Education nationale qui y abrite aujourd'hui un centre de recherche,  spécialisé dans la flore méditerranéenne. Ce centre est géré par le Musée National d'Histoire Naturelle et il est connu sous le nom de Jardin botanique exotique de Menton.

Val Rahmeh Garden - the Giant Pot

Eventually, this property was bought, in 1905, by Lord Radcliff, the ex-governor of Malta and his wife, Rahmeh, hence the name of the garden.  They added to the original villa and bought adjoining agricultural land, mostly planted with olive trees, some of which you can still admire in the garden, along with two of the original orange trees. 

Here you see a beautiful old pot which stands in front of a corner of the villa. And in the background, horticultural students take a class in the sunshine.

Finalement, cette propriété a été achetée, en 1905, par Lord Radcliff, ex-gouverneur de Malte et son épouse, Rahmeh, d'où le nom du jardin. Pour les adjoindre à la villa d'origine, ils ont acheté des terres agricoles adjacentes, principalement plantées d'oliviers, dont certains que vous pouvez encore admirer dans le jardin, ainsi que deux orangers d'origine. La famille Radcliff a quitté la propriété et le jardin en terrasse vers le milieu du XXe siècle.

Ici, vous voyez une belle jarre ancienne qui se trouve en face d'un coin de la villa. Et dans le fond, des étudiants en horticulture prennent un cours  en plein soleil.

Val Rahmeh Garden - the Monogram

... and yet another shot of the same old gate as we've seen yesterday and the day before. The property was built in the late 19th century by a noble family of Menton, De Monléon, who left their monogram on this old portal. You see this gateway from avenue Saint Jacques but nowadays you enter the garden higher up this narrow street. The portal, as you see, is dated 1875.

La propriété a été construite au 19e siècle par une famille noble de Menton, les De Monléon, qui ont laissé leur monogramme sur le vieux portail. On peut voir cette entrée depuis l'avenue Saint-Jacques, mais aujourd'hui, vous entrez dans le jardin dans une partie supérieure de cette rue étroite. Le portail, comme vous le voyez, est daté de 1875.

The 'No Smoking' Beach

One of Menton's beaches - Plage Fossan - has been made into a 'No Smoking' beach this summer. They even provide an ashtray to use before you enter. According to Nice-Matin it has proved unpopular. This is also a 'No Dog' beach but Menton does have three beaches that allow dogs - woof woof!

Une des plages de Menton - la  Plage du Fossan - a été décrétée plage «Sans Tabac»  cet été. On fournit même un cendrier à utiliser avant d'entrer. Selon Nice-Matin, elle s'est avérée impopulaire. Cette plage est aussi «Interdite aux Chiens» mais  Menton propose trois plages qui acceptent les chiens - ouaf ouaf!

The Serenity Box

Isn't this a great idea? For one euro you can rent a 'Serenity Box' on the beach. Insert one euro and remove the bracelet (which includes the key) - put in your purse, camera, whatever - close the door and wear the bracelet.

The notice on the inside of the door asks you to clean the key before inserting it in the lock.

N'est-ce pas une bonne idée? Pour un euro, vous pouvez louer une "Sérénity Box» sur la plage. Insérez un euro et retirez le bracelet ( qui comprend la clé) - mettez votre sac à main, votre appareil photo et  tout autre objet à l'intérieur - fermez la porte et gardez le bracelet.

La Mandragore

Yesterday's photo was taken, sitting here at La Mandragore drinking a long cool Vittel Menthe. I love the Mandragore - it's owned and run by a well-known artist, Yves Bosio and his son. You always get such a friendly welcome. It serves deliciously fresh local food, as well as drinks of course.

J'aime la Mandragore - elle appartient à un artiste bien connu qui la gère aussi: Yves Bosio et son fils. Vous recevez toujours un  accueil tellement chaleureux! Il sert une délicieuse cuisine locale à base de produits frais, ainsi que des boissons bien sûr.

Before 'La Rentrée'

Not long now and it will be time for 'la rentrée' when the crowds leave the beaches and head for home. Back to work and back to school. But for the moment, no one is thinking of that ...

Dans peu de temps maintenant, ce sera l'heure de  «la rentrée» quand la foule quittera les plages et rentrera chez elle. Retour au travail et à l'école. Mais pour l'instant, personne ne pense à ça.

Flamenco! - the Mayor and 'la Petite Gitane'

This was the 11th year of the Flamenco Festival in Gorbio. No small thanks are due to our mayor, Monsieur Michel Isnard. I love that a mayor walks around in a soft shirt, jeans and with designer stubble ... He's a renowned artist himself and but for him we'd not enjoy so many fabulous cultural events in the village. He's hard-working, down to earth, encouraging to everyone - he calms tensions - and is so well liked. The village is all the better for having a mayor like Michel.

But the Flamenco Festival is something very special for our mayor. At the microphone he told a story of a gitan child, 'la petite gitane,' whose family was one of many gitan families persecuted by Franco during the Spanish civil war and who fled Spain and ended up in France. That was Michel Isnard's mother.

No wonder he adores and promotes the passion of the gitan flamenco.

And a final word of thanks to the incredible Isabel Cortes and Luis De Alméria. They own 'Los Flamencos' their flamenco dance and singing school at Port de Bouc, not far from Marseilles. Each year they organise this festival bringing with them the sensational dancers, singers and musicians. And normally, if we are lucky, Isabel (who also gives flamenco classes each afternoon in the Salle des Fetes) dances for us at the end of the evening. (see the last photo). Senor De Almeria is a renowned gitan singer and we heard his wonderful voice in the church on the first night.

Thank you Monsieur le Maire and all the volunteers. And thank you Isabel Cortes, Luis De Alméria and all the dancers, singers and musicians. Until next year ...

C'était le onzième Festival de Flamenco à Gorbio. De grands remerciements sont dus à notre maire, M. Michel Isnard.  J'aime qu'un maire se promène en simple shirt et jeans, avec une barbe de trois jours ...C'est un artiste de renom et sans lui, nous ne profiterions pas d' autant d'évènements culturels dans le village.  C'est un travailleur, les pieds sur terre qui encourage tout le monde - il apaise les tensions - et il est très aimé.  Le village a de la chance d'avoir un maire comme Michel.

Mais le Festival Flamenco est quelque chose de très spécial pour notre maire. Au micro, il a raconté l'histoire d'une jeune gitane, «la petite gitane», dont la famille était parmi les nombreuses autres familles gitanes persécutées par Franco pendant la guerre civile espagnole et qui a fui l'Espagne pour  la France. C'était la mère de Michel Isnard.

Pas étonnant qu'il adore et fait partager sa passion du flamenco gitan.

Un dernier mot de remerciement à l'incroyable Isabel Cortes et à Luis de Almeria. Ils sont propriétaires de «Los Flamencos» leur école de danse et de chant à Port de Bouc, non loin de Marseille. Chaque année, ils organisent ce festival amenant avec eux de sensationnels danseurs,  chanteurs et  musiciens.  Et normalement, si nous avons de la chance, Isabel (qui donne aussi des cours de flamenco chaque après-midi dans la salle des fêtes ) danse pour nous à la fin de la soirée.  Senor De Almeria est un chanteur gitan de renom et nous avons entendu sa voix merveilleuse dans l'église, la première soirée.

Je vous remercie Monsieur le Maire ainsi que tous les bénévoles  Et merci à Isabel Cortes, Luis de Almeria et tous à les danseurs, chanteurs et musiciens.  Jusqu'à l'année prochaine ...

Flamenco! - Curtain Call

It's almost over - time for the curtain calls.  Here are three of the dancers - Y Jesus Carmona, Maria Moreno and  Antonio Morino 'Choro.'  We saw the beautiful Maria dancing HERE.   The male dancers were every bit as fabulous as the women but I'm not happy with my photos of them - so we'll see the boys next year!

La soirée est presque finie - c'est le moment des rappels. Voici trois des danseurs - Y Jesus Carmona , Maria Moreno et Antonio Morino 'Choro.'  Nous avons vu la belle  Maria qui dansait ICI.  Les danseurs étaient tout aussi excellents que les danseuses, mais je ne suis pas satisfaite de mes photos - alors nous verrons les garçons l'an prochain!

Flamenco! - Alejandra Hernandez

Don't you just adore the dress! This is Alejandra Hernandez who danced fabulously. How difficult must it be to not only dance flamenco but manage this amazing dress and on top of that do all sorts of clever things with the shawl!

La robe n'est-elle pas adorable! Il s'agit d' Alejandra Hernandez qui a magnifiquement  dansé.  Comme il doit être difficile , non seulement de danser le  flamenco, mais de bouger cette robe incroyable et en plus de cela, de faire toutes sortes de mouvements harmonieux avec le châle!
