This evening! Vernissage of photography in the Tour Lascaris at Gorbio. Two photographers. Khaled Youssef will be exhibiting his new series of beautiful bubble photos and Jilly Bennett will be showing new black and white photos of life and love in Menton and Gorbio.

Do come along.  Everyone welcome. 18h. Friday, 7th June in the Chateau at the top of the village. Come an have an aperitif and a enjoy the show. Afterwards? Gil, the pizza chef at the Restaurant les Terrassess/Chez Paulo, makes great pizzas.

The Fried Egg Flower

You see this beautiful plant from time to time in the gardens of the south. Here it is at the Serre de la Madone. It's Latin name is Romneya coulteri and it originates from Mexico. The common names are Matilija poppy or fried egg flower - and you can see why!

It grows from rhizomes - hard to get going at first but later it can take over a hillside. Pretty, isn't it?

Vous voyez parfois cette belle plante  dans les jardins du sud. Ici, elle pousse à la Serre de la Madone. Son nom latin est Romneya coulteri et elle est originaire du Mexique. Ses noms communs sont Pavot de Matilija ou de fleur d'oeufs au plat - et vous pouvez voir pourquoi!

Elle  se développe à partir de rhizomes - difficile en début de croissance, mais par la suite, elle peut coloniser une colline. Jolie, n'est-ce pas?

Dreaming at the Serre de la Madone

A young boy pushes the main door of Lawrence Johnston's villa at the Serre de la Madone in Menton. We are suddenly back in the 1920s when he created this beautiful garden. 

The little boy reminds me of the angelic child, Tadzio in Visconti's film Death in Venice. Thomas Mann published the book in 1912.

Un jeune garçon pousse la porte principale de la villa de Lawrence Johnston à la Serre de la Madone à Menton. Nous sommes tout à coup dans les années 1920 quand il a créé ce magnifique jardin.
Le petit garçon me rappelle Tadzio,l'angélique enfant du film "Mort à Venise" de Visconti. Thomas Mann avait publié le roman en 1912.

Juste du rêve ... la Serre de la Madone peut faire cela pour vous ...

Palais Carnoles - Végétal Emoi

The gardens of the Palais Carnoles in Menton are famous for citrus fruit and also for the dozens of scuptures on display. And at the moment, there's an extra surprise, an exhibition of beautiful photography, called Végétal Emoi, by the Nice-based group Collectif Photon. Here you see photographs by Henri Limousin, Valerie Marco and Jacqueline Miot. The exhibition continues until the 27th October.

Les jardins du Palais Carnolès à Menton sont célèbres pour leurs agrumes et aussi pour les dizaines de sculptures qui y sont exposées. Et en ce moment, il y a une surprise supplémentaire, une belle exposition de  photographies appelée: Végétal Emoi, par le  groupe niçois Collectif Photon. Yanis

This adorable little boy is called Yanis and lives in Gorbio village. In the photo below,  he is outside the lovely gift shop (La Cave de Gorbio) of his grandmother, Frederique.

My 'mulot' and me ...

My 'mulot' and me... well, we have a difficult relationship.

A 'mulot' seems to be vernacular in French for several varieties of rat or mouse that live on fruit and seeds.  The word translates as field mouse but this chap is much bigger than any field mouse I've ever met.   I've heard English speakers call them tree rats. So who knows?  Some say he's a campagnol - a vole? For sure, he is cute with his little round ears (a bit chewed), white belly and throat and look at those adorable feet.

The problem in our relationship is that he eats all the bird seed which is intended for the numerous coal tits around here.  So I have no choice - I put out more sunflower seeds - he eats them - I put out more ... I'm keeping the sunflower seed industry in business at the moment.

Mon « mulot » et moi ... Eh bien, nous avons une relation difficile.

Un « mulot » est un nom vernaculaire en Français pour plusieurs variétés de rats ou de souris qui se nourrissent  de fruits et de graines. C'est peut-être ce qu'on appelle un souris des champs mais celui-ci est beaucoup plus gros que tous ceux que j'ai jamais vus. J'ai entendu des Anglais les appeler des rats d'arbre. Alors, qui sait ? Certains disent qu'il s'agit d'un campagnol? Pour sûr, il est mignon avec ses petites oreilles rondes (un peu déchiquetées), le ventre et de la gorge blancs et regardez ces adorables pattes.

Le problème dans notre relation, c'est qu'il mange toute les graines d'oiseaux qui sont destinées aux nombreuses mésanges charbonnières d'ici. Donc, n'ayant pas de choix - J'ai mis plus de graines de tournesol - il les mange - j'en mets encore plus ... Je tiens une entreprise industrielle de graines de tournesol en ce moment.

Italy/France Street Theatre - Monday Morning Smiles ...

It's Monday morning so let's cheer ourselves up with the gorgeous smiles of these four students, in Menton to take part in the Italian/French day of street theatre.

C'est lundi matin et nous allons donc nous remonter le moral avec les sourires magnifiques de ces quatre étudiantes qui participaient à la journée de théâtre de rue Franco -Italien à Menton.

Italy/France Street Theatre - the Giants and the Little Ones

Six hundred students paraded through the narrow streets, led by performers from Chivasso, near Turin in Italy. The group is called Faber Teatro. Some perform on stilts (the giants) and some at ground level (the small ones) - all great fun, especially when they have a battle.

Six cents étudiants ont défilé à travers les rues étroites, dirigés par des artistes de Chivasso, près de Turin en Italie. Le groupe s'appelle Faber Teatro. Certains acteurs étaient sur des échasses (les géants) et d'autres au ras du sol (les petits) -  c'était très amusant, surtout quand ils se sont livrés une bataille.

Italy/France Street Theatre - Laughter

Once a year in May the streets of les Menton are invaded by around 600 students - Italian, French and of course some from Menton. This year was the 20th edition of Rencontres Franco-Italiennes de Theatre de Rue (street theatre for students) and as always everyone had a great time.

Une fois par an,  au mois de mai, les rues de Menton sont envahies par quelques 600 étudiants - Italiens, Français et bien sûr Mentonnais.  Cette année, c'était la 20e édition des Rencontres Franco - Italiennes de théâtre de rue et comme toujours, ce fut un grand moment pour tous.

San Remo - Marketable!

Market people are born actors, on stage all the time and if they are Italian, they are heaven for a photographer.  Show an Italian a camera and they immediately go into pose-mode.  These two guys were happy to show off their many charms at San Remo's market.

Les vendeurs sur les marchés sont des acteurs nés, toujours  sur scène et, si en plus ils sont italiens, c'est  un bonheur pour les photographes. Montrez un appareil photo à un italien et  immédiatement il prend la  pose. Ces deux messieurs étaient heureux de montrer leurs nombreux charmes au marché de San Rémo. 

Ne sont-ils pas géniaux! Merci messieurs!

Buddies

The owners of the dog were having lunch sitting outside the Restaurant Beausejour in Gorbio.  The parents of this little girl were having lunch at Chez Paulo across the square.

She wasn't interested in eating - much more fun riding around on her scooter and making a new canine friend.

Les propriétaires du chien sont en train de déjeuner au restaurant Le Beauséjour à Gorbio.  Les parents de cette petite fille sont en train de déjeuner au restaurant Chez Paulo de l'autre côté de la place.

Manger ne l'intéressait pas - c'était beaucoup plus amusant de jouer avec sa trottinette et de se faire un nouvel ami canin.

A  Gorbio, c'est le Paradis!  

Restaurant L'Ulivo - Lunch

This was Peter's first course at Restaurant l'Ulivo - a fish dish with oranges. Mine (see smaller photo) was created with chopped raw prawn and green apple - excellent! We both had a really good lobster risotto as our main course. And afterwards, Peter had a lemon pie (of course in Menton!) and I had a Sardinian cheese and honey pastry, made with a pecorino cheese called Seada. (to die for!) All washed down with a good Provence white.

After that we could barely move ... again, thankyou dear Peter!

Ce fut le premier plat de Peter au restaurant l'Ulivo - un plat de poisson avec des oranges. Le mien (voir la petite photo)  était fait de crevettes crues et de pommes vertes hachées - excellent! Nous avions choisi tous les deux un très bon risotto de homard en plat principal. Et ensuite, Peter a  pris une tarte au citron ( à Menton, ça s'impose!) et moi, une pâtisserie appelée Seada, au fromage sarde, le pécorino, et au miel (une tuerie!) le tout arrosé d'un bon Provence blanc.

Après ça,  nous pouvions à peine bouger ... encore, merci cher Peter!

Restaurant L'Ulivo - Sylvano the Chef

Meet Sylvano Gastaldi, the chef at the Sardinian restaurant L'Ulivo, which is tucked away at the end of Place du Cap, Menton.  Super food, some of which we'll see tomorrow. Sylvano was chef for years on the big Cunard liners and said he'd been around the world six times. Glad he's in Menton now as he's a good cook!

The restaurant is housed in a building that is classified as a monument historique in France with its beautiful trompe l'oeil facade.  I'm told the Mayor of Menton is a regular visitor and is a friend of the owner, Pascal.

I was lucky enough to be taken there by my friend Peter from Peter's Paris who came to stay for a couple of nights. Thank you Peter!

Voici Sylvano Gastaldi, le chef du restaurant sarde L'Ulivo, qui est niché au bout de la Place du Cap à Menton. La cuisine y est excellente, comme nous le verrons demain. Silvano a été le chef pendant des années sur les grands paquebots de la Cunard Line et dit qu'il a fait le tour du monde à six reprises. Maintenant, il est heureux à Menton où il montre ses talents de  bon cuisinier!
Le restaurant est situé dans un immeuble classé monument historique de France pour ses beaux  trompe-l'œil. On me dit que le Maire de Menton est un client régulier ainsi qu'un ami du propriétaire, Pascal.
J'ai eu beaucoup de chance d'être invitée là par mon ami Peter de 'Peter's Paris' qui est venu pour passer deux nuits. Merci Peter!

Donkey Day Out

Two donkeys wander down towards the old village in Gorbio. They've escaped from somewhere but doubtless their owner will appear sooner or later to take them home. Meanwhile, the sides of the road are getting a haircut.

Deux ânes vagabonds  descendant vers le vieux village de Gorbio. Ils ont du s'échapper de quelque part mais sans doute quelqu'un va apparaître tôt ou tard pour les ramener chez eux. Pendant ce temps, les côtés de la route bénéficient d'une coupe d'herbe.

Uses for a Chair

Bussana Vecchia near San Remo, is the village destroyed in an earthquake at the end of the 19th century. I've posted about this village before and how it was taken over by artists in the 60s and is still undergoing restoration. How about a blue door, a chair for a plant holder and the dog as a cute bonus!

Bussana Vecchia près de San Remo, est ce village détruit lors d'un séisme à la fin du 19ème siècle. J'ai déjà écrit sur ce village, la façon dont il a été repeuplé par des artistes dans les années 60 et sa restauration toujours en cours. Que pensez-vous d'une porte bleue, d'une chaise pour tenir un pot et le joli chien en bonus!

The Cooking Lesson - les Enfants

The Cooking Lesson - Eating the Spoils

A croque-monsieur (toasted ham and cheese sandwich) for the little girl on the left - and courgette fritters for the one on the right.

I had some of the fritters and can tell you they were delicious, with the lightest batter. These children are going to grow up good cooks!

J'ai goûté deux beignets et je peux vous dire qu'ils étaient délicieux, avec la plus légère des pâtes. Ces enfants vont grandir en  bons cuisiniers!

The Cooking Lesson - Start Young!

Some children get the opportunity to learn to cook early in life and this little one certainly does. Céloine is the adorable daughter of Celine, the chef at Chez Paulo and who is teaching these children today. Such a serious look but in fact she was tired as she'd missed her nap.

Certains enfants ont l'occasion d'apprendre à cuisiner tôt dans la vie et c'est certainement le cas de cette petite. Céloine est la fille adorable de Céline, le chef du restaurant Chez Paulo qui enseigne à ces enfants aujourd'hui. Un regard très sérieux mais qui en fait montre sa fatigue car elle avait raté sa sieste.

The Cooking Lesson - Beignets

If you want to get your children to eat their veggies, get them to make beignets (fritters) of courgettes and auberginea, which is what these children are doing and when cooked, the beignets disappeared very quickly! Here they are making the batter.

Si vous voulez faire manger des légumes à vos enfants, faites-leur confectionner des beignets de courgettes et d'aubergines comme le font ces enfants et dès qu'ils seront cuits, ces  beignets disparaitront très rapidement! Ici, ils préparent la pâte à frire.
