'Artists of the Village' - Michel Isnard

How fabulously this beautiful painting sits in its milieu. From the moment, I photographed all the art in the village, and I love so many, this was my favourite. To learn that is was painted by the Mayor of Gorbio, Michel Isnard, is no surprise as he is an artist of renown. I spoke with him yesterday and he explained that this painting is autobiographical and speaks of the time over 40 years ago when he moved to the village of Gorbio and was, at that time, a stranger.

I adore it!

Comment fabuleusement cette belle peinture se trouve dans son milieu.   Depuis le moment où j'ai pris les photos de tous les tableaux dans le village,  je l'aime tellement, c'est mon préféré. Et apprendre qu'il a été peint par le maire de Gorbio, Michel Isnard, ne fut pas une surprise car c'est un artiste de renom. J'ai parlé avec lui hier et il m'a expliqué que cette peinture est autobiographique et parle du temps, il y a plus de 40 ans de cela, où il a emménagé dans le village de Gorbio et était, à ce moment-là, un étranger.

Je l'adore !

'Artists of the Village' - the Vernissage and Geraldine

We are at the vernissage of the 'Artists of the Village' - Geraldine Rebuffatti is the hard-working organiser of this event and here she is singing a funny song to the artists, village dignitaries and public who have gathered in the square by the Chateau.

In the other photos, you see Geraldine's painting which hangs on a wall opposite the Chapelle de Gubernatis near the entrance to the old village.

Nous sommes au vernissage des « Artistes du Village " - Géraldine Rebuffatti est l'organisatrice assidue de cet événement et ici elle chante une chanson drôle, qui a été très appréciée, par les artistes, les personnalités  du village et le  public, tous rassemblés sur la place du Château.    

Sur les autres photos, vous voyez l'oeuvre de Géraldine accrochée sur un mur en face de la Chapelle de Gubernatis près de l'entrée du vieux village. 

'Artists of the Village' - Marcelle et Michele

Another piece of art that fits so beautifully into its environment.  No surprise that artists choose to paint the beauty around them.  This painting is by Marcelle Vial.

The blue painting above the archway is by Michele Kleijnen.  You can see this more clearly by clicking on the photo below to enlarge.

Une autre œuvre d'art qui s'intègre très bien dans son environnement. Ce n'est pas étonnant que les artistes choisissent de peindre la beauté autour d'eux. Cette toile est de Marcelle Vial.

'Artists of the Village' - Alain Ducret's Circles

Some installations required a pulley and a certain amount of brute force. 

I don't know the name of the artwork but isn't it great fun! At first you see wheels and then suddenly you notice a dog collar and is that a grill for the barbecue? ... and so on and so on.  The artist is Alain Ducret.

Certaines installations ont besoin d' une poulie et d' une certaine quantité de force brute. 

Je ne connais pas le nom de l'oeuvre, mais n'est-ce pas très amusant! Au début, vous voyez des roues et puis soudain, vous remarquez un collier de chien et n'est-ce pas un gril de barbecue? ... et ainsi de suite, et ainsi de suite. L'artiste est Alain Ducret.

'Artists of the Village' - Escargot Luminaire (Christine Mouteaud)

Each year there is an exhibition in the medieval village of Gorbio called 'Artists of the Village' which is normally held in the Presbytery.  This year, because the Presbytery is taken up with the wonderful exhibition of young Indian artists (also in the Chateau), the village artists decided to display their work on the walls of the village itself and it's absolutely wonderful! 

Each work of art seems to hang perfectly in its place.  Here is a painting called 'Escargot Luminaire' (Snail Light) by Christine Mouteaud which refers of course, to the wonderful Fetes des Limaces, held in the village in June.

Chaque année,  dans le village médiéval de Gorbio, a lieu une exposition appelée « Artistes du Village », qui se tient normalement dans le presbytère . Cette année, parce que le presbytère est occupé par la merveilleuse exposition de jeunes artistes indiens ( également dans le château ), les artistes ont décidé de présenter leur travail sur les murs même du village  et c'est absolument merveilleux!

Chaque œuvre d'art semble se trouver parfaitement à sa place. Voici un tableau intitulé « Escargot Luminaire » par Christine Mouteaud qui se réfère bien sûr, à la merveilleuse Fête des Limaces, qui s'est déroulée dans le village en Juin.

It always amazes me when I see girls riding a scooter and wearing shoes like this. Secretly, of course, I wish it were me --- just not enough room for the dogs!

Cela m'étonne toujours quand je vois des filles en scooter et portant de telles  chaussures. Secrètement, bien sûr, je souhaiterais être à leur place --- simplement il n'y a pas assez de place pour les chiens!

Weekend Africain - Last Day at the Ivory Coast

Our last day at the Weekend African.  At the end of the performance,
anyway who wanted could get up on stage and dance, along with the artistes.

This included this tiny child - how could I resist!

Thanks to everyone who has followed this series.  Next year: Senegal!

Weekend Africain - the Sorcerer

Beware the sorcerer - or is it a demon! When he moves there's a massive cloud of dust. This was a stunning piece of dance theatre with the sorcerer as the baddie who is eventually overcome by the dancers and so good wins the day.

Méfiez-vous du sorcier - ou bien est-ce un démon ! Quand il se déplace , il y a un nuage énorme de poussière. Ce fut une superbe démonstration de danse-théâtre avec le sorcier dans le rôle du méchant qui est finalement vaincu par les danseurs gagnants du jour.

Weekend Africain - the Ivory Coast

The medieval village of Gorbio is 'en fete' this weekend as the village resounds to the sounds of Africa - the Ivory Coast to be exact.  This is the third Weekend Africain to be held in the village where you can any of the many classes in dance, drums, percussion, fabrication of masks and totems, make-up, design - there are classes for children and for adults.

But it's at night when the real magic begin. 

First an African meal under the stars (I'll tell you about that another day) and then sit back and lose yourselves in the hot rhythms of eleven amazing performers in the group, Tamary.

Le village médiéval de Gorbio est «en fête» ce week-end et il résonne aux sons de l'Afrique - la Côte d'Ivoire pour être exact. C'est la troisième Weekend Africain qui se tient dans le village où on peut prendre l'un des nombreux cours,  de danse, de tambours,de percussions, de fabrication de masques et totems, de maquillage ou de  dessin.  Il existe des cours pour les enfants et pour les adultes.
 
Mais c'est la nuit que la vraie magie commence.

D'abord un repas africain sous les étoiles (je vous en parlerai un autre jour), puis asseyez-vous et laissez- vous emporter par  les rythmes chauds de onze artistes étonnants du groupe, Tamary.

'Tango in Menton' - the Joy of Dance

This is a photo I'd taken earlier in the day.  Near to the sea preparations are taking place for the evening's concert.

Musicians are rehearsing for the concert and this little girl has the whole dance floor to herself and is loving it!
