Cocteau Museum - the Architecture

 In 2007, the city of Menton launched a competition for the design of the new Jean Cocteau Museum to house the works of Jean Cocteau - the result of an exceedingly generous donation by an American businessman, Severin Wunderman. The contract was awarded to Rudy Ricciotti and here you see the finished result. The builder cover 2700m2. More shots from different angles tomorrow.

Cocteau Museum - Bergman, Dietrich et Jean Marais

This slatted structure is used to display photos from well-known Cocteau films. You'll recognise, Ingrid Bergman, Marlene Dietrich and of course Jean Marais.

Cocteau Museum

The slats of this structure outside the Jean Cocteau museum in Menton create fascinating patterns of light and shade. The low white building you see in the background is part of the Cocteau museum itself.

Fête de l'Orme - the 'Great and the Good' of Gorbio

After the benediction of the 300 year old elm tree, the 'great and the good' of Gorbio pose under her protective branches.  That's our fabulous and dynamic mayor, Michel Isnard, in black and surrounding him are some members of the Conseil Municipale as well as the priest. The lady in that dramatic red dress is the mayor's stunning dance teacher wife, Marie-France.

The rain has stopped. the sun has appeared - all is well in Gorbio's wonderful world.

Après la bénédiction de l'orme tricentenaire, la bonne société de Gorbio pose sous ses branches protectrices. C'est notre formidable et dynamique maire, Michel Isnard, en noir,  avec autour de lui des membres du Conseil Municipal et le prêtre. La dame dans cette spectaculaire robe rouge est Marie France, professeur de danse, la belle épouse du maire.    

La pluie a cessé. le soleil a fait son apparition - tout va bien dans le monde merveilleux de Gorbio.

Fête de l'Orme - the Marquis who can Sew!

Meet Patrice, the Marquis - a Marquis who can sew!  Patrice was part of Gorbio's amazing band of sewers overseen by the indomitable Veronique.  The volunteers worked for months and months creating costumes for the villagers. The presbytery was turned into a mini-factory:  four or five sewing machines in one room, fabric in another, hats in another, a cutting room and so on.

And Patrice was there, day in day out, as were the others, making other people's costumes as well as his own.  We'll meet all these great people as time goes by.

Doesn't this tell you what a very special village this is?

Voici Patrice, le Marquis - un marquis qui sait coudre! Patrice, a  faisait partie du formidable groupe de couturiers de Gorbio dirigé par l'indomptable Véronique. Ils ont travaillé pendant des mois et les mois à la création de costumes pour les villageois. Le presbytère a été transformé en une mini-usine: quatre ou cinq machines à coudre dans une pièce, les tissus dans une autre, les chapeaux dans une autre encore, une salle de coupe et ainsi de suite.

Et Patrice était là, jour après jour, tout comme les autres bénévoles, confectionnant les costumes pour d'autres personnes ainsi que le sien. Nous allons rencontrer tous ces gens formidables au fil du temps.

N'est-ce pas la preuve que c'est un village très spécial?

Fête de l'Orme - Gorbarin, the language of Gorbio

After the benediction of the 300 year old tree, the priest stands by the inscription set in a nearby wall.  In honour of the event, he is wearing sacerdotal robes from the18th century.

Later Arlette Pastor (Sota Orme) read aloud the words in Gorbarin, the language spoken in Gorbio.

And last of all, before the dancing begins again, the tree was awarded the designation 'Remarkable Tree of France.' And she waved her branches with pride.

Après la bénédiction du vieil arbre tricentenaire, le prêtre se tient près de l'inscription insérée sur  un mur à proximité. En l'honneur de l'évènement, il porte des habits sacerdotaux du 18ème siècle.

Plus tard, Arlette Pastor (Sota Orme) en lit les mots écrits en gorbarin,  la langue  parlée à Gorbio.

Et enfin, avant que les  danses ne recommencent, l'arbre a reçu le label « Arbre remarquable de France."  Et il agita ses branches avec fierté. 

Féte de l'Orme - the Benediction of the Tree and the Treaty of Utrecht

The celebration for the 300th birthday of Gorbio's elm tree was a two day affair. On the Saturday, a feast in the main square and afterwards traditional dancing by the group 'Sota Orme'. On the second day, a mass was held in the Church of Saint Barthélemy and afterwards the cure/archpriest Philippe Gugliemi blessed the tree, as you see in this photo.

And if you wonder how we know for sure that our beautiful tree was indeed planted 300 years ago, here is the explanation.  According to local history, it was planted in 1713 in the village square on the occasion of the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht, by which the County of Nice returned to the sovereignty of the Duke of Savoy.  The tree has grown and thrived and is the faithful companion of many generations.

La célébration du 300e anniversaire de l'orme de Gorbio s'est déroulée sur deux jours. Le samedi, une fête sur la place principale et ensuite les danses traditionnelles du groupe «Sota Orme ". Le deuxième jour, une messe a été célébrée dans l'église Saint Barthélemy puis,  l'archiprêtre Philippe Gugliemi a béni l'arbre, comme vous le voyez sur cette photo.

Et si vous vous demandez comment nous sommes sûrs que notre bel arbre a été planté il y a 300 ans, voici l'explication. Selon l'histoire locale,  il a été planté en 1713 sur l'actuelle place de la République à l'occasion de la signature du traité d'Utrecht, par lequel le comté de Nice repasse sous la souveraineté du duc de Savoie. Il demeure depuis, le fidèle compagnon de nombreuses générations.

Fête de l'Orme - the 'Restaurant Beausejour' team

Today, we meet the Restaurant Beausejour team, all dressed up in their finery for the Fête de l'Orme. In the main photo you see Yvan with his beautiful wife, Naila at the window.  Naila is always difficult to photograph because, as chef, she is always in the kitchen producing the restaurant's wonderful menus.

And in the photo below their two fabulous serving wenches -  daughter Manon and her cousin, Lea.

Don't you just love Yvan's expression! A contented man surrounded by three beautiful women!

Aujourd'hui, nous rencontrons l'équipe du restaurant Le Beauséjour, tous vêtus de leurs plus beaux atours pour la fête de l'Orme. Sur la photo principale, vous voyez Yvan avec sa belle épouse, Naïla à la fenêtre. Naïla est toujours difficile à photographier parce qu' en tant que chef, elle est toujours dans la cuisine à réaliser les succulents menus du restaurant.

Dans la photo ci-dessous les deux sympathiques serveuses en costumes d'époque - Manon, la fille de la famille et sa cousine, Léa.

L''expression d'Yvan n'est-elle pas aimable! Un homme heureux entouré de trois belles femmes!

Fête de l'Orme - the 'Bar les Terrasses' team

Most of the village got into the spirit of the Fête de l'Orme, including the two restaurants.

Here is the team from the Bar Les Terrasses. Vanessa (in red) is with her cousin, Bérengère and her lovely baby. Have you noticed how all the girls in Gorbio are so beautiful!

Vanessa and her father, Paul, run the Bar Les Terrasses. You see him in the second photo alongside Vanessa's mother.

In the last photo, meet the fabulous serving wenches - Sarah and Muriel. Sarah is always there. Muriel helps out when the bar is really busy - which it was!

La plupart des gens du village se sont mis dans l'ambiance de la Fête de l'Orme, y compris les deux restaurants.

Voici l'équipe du bar Les Terrasses. Vanessa (en rouge) est avec sa cousine, Bérengère et son beau bébé. Avez-vous remarqué comme toutes les filles de Gorbio sont belles!

Dans la dernière photo, voici les fabuleuses serveuses en vêtements d'époque - Sarah et Muriel. Sarah est toujours là. Muriel aide quand la bar est bien rempli - et il l'était!

Fête de l'Orme - Tonio et Agnès

Everyone had such fun at the Fête de l'Orme, everyone really entered into the ambiance of the festival and into the spirit of their characters. The lady in the middle with the white cap is my dear friend and neighbour, Agnes - a fabulous person who has made all the difference to my life here in France. Also, it's Agnes who, day after day, corrects the French translation on this blog. And the gentleman with the pitchfork is the adorable Tonio. He is an artisan builder and he's also a White Penitent of the village. His charming wife, Martine has a marvellous archive of photos of the village going back generations and generations.

Tout le monde s'amusait à la fête de l'Orme, tous les gens étaient vraiment entrés dans l'ambiance de la  fête et dans l'esprit de leur personnage. La dame au milieu avec le chapeau blanc est ma chère amie et voisine, Agnès - une gentille personne qui a facilité ma vie ici, en France. C'est aussi Agnès qui, jour après jour, corrige la traduction en français sur ce blog. Et le monsieur avec la fourche, c'est l'adorable Tonio. C'est un artisan maçon et aussi un des Pénitents Blancs de Gorbio. Sa charmante épouse, Martine possède une merveilleuse collection de photos du village remontant de génération en génération.

So many events took place in Gorbio last weekend for the 300th birthday celebrations of the village elm tree and I keep flitting about, showing you photos from various times of the day.

So let's have a little order on the blog today.

On Saturday the first thing that happened, apart from everyone exclaiming how wonderful we all looked, is that we walked up to the church where a small blessing took place in the square. So here are a few photos from the parade to and from the church. Notice the wooden clogs - how hard must they be to walk on!

De nombreux événements ont eu lieu à Gorbio le week-end dernier pour les célébrations du tricentenaire de l'orme du village et j'ai déambulé partout, vous montrant des photos des différents moments de la journée.

Donc, nous allons remettre un peu d'ordre sur le blog aujourd'hui.

Le samedi, la première chose qui s'est passée, à part le fait que tout le monde s'exclamait  en se trouvant tous merveilleux, c'est que nous avons marché jusqu'à l'église où une petite bénédiction a eu lieu sur la place. Voici donc quelques photos du défilé en direction de l'église. Remarquez les sabots de bois - comme il doit être difficile de marcher  avec eux!

And they danced and they danced! They danced around the tree, they danced outside the Mairie, they danced by the fountain of the Count of Malaussene and at night they danced outside the bar. And all the time, the branches of the 300 year old elm tree swayed and its leaves fluttered to the rhythm of the music.

 Et ils dansaient et ils dansaient! Ils ont dansé autour de l'arbre, ils ont dansé devant  la Mairie, ils ont dansé autour de la fontaine du Comte de Malaussène et dans la soirée, ils ont dansé devant le bar. Et pendant tout ce temps, les branches de l'orme tricentenaire se balançaient et ses feuilles flottaient au rythme de la musique.

Fête de l'Orme - the Feast!

This is how the villagers of Gorbio celebrated the 300th birthday of Gorbio's elm tree. Two hundred and thirty fabulous costumes, feasting, laughter, joy, fabulous musicians, dancing - we'll see it all.

The lady showing a leg is Marie-France who is one of Gorbio's amazing volunteers - she, along with others who worked so hard, chopped vegetables for hours and hours, making a marvellous gratin of courgettes and another with pumpkin, turnips and polenta to go along with the roast sucking pig and wild boar.

C'est ainsi que les habitants du village de Gorbio ont célébré le 300e anniversaire de l'orme. Deux cents trente magnifiques costumes, le banquet, des  rires, de la joie, des musiciens fabuleux, des danses - On verra tout cela.

La dame montrant une jambe s'appelle Marie-France, l'une des merveilleux bénévoles de Gorbio. Avec d'autres, elle a beaucoup travaillé, hachant des légumes pendant des heures et des heures pour faire les  délicieux  gratins  de courgettes, de  citrouille, de navets ou d'aubergines  qui accompagnaient les rôtis de cochon de lait et de gibier.

Happy 300th Birthday to Gorbio's Elm Tree!

The big day has finally arrived!  We celebrate the 300th birthday of Gorbio's beautiful elm tree.  Today there will be feasting and dancing in the village square, ancient games and skits in Gorbarine, the language of Gorbio - incidentally still spoken and kept alive by the Association Sota-Orme.  There's also a fabulous exhibition of 300 photos, some recent, many ancient and all showing the tree in every weather and doing what it does best - being a gathering place for all the village events.

Tomorrow, a grand Mass in the church and later an aperitif for the villagers. The tree will receive the official label 'Tree Remarkable' of France. And later, there will be a concert in the church by the l'Ensemble Baroque de Nice.

Only those of us in 18th century dress can take part - but of course you can come along and watch along with the TV cameras ...

This poster features 8 of the villagers dressed in their 18th century costumes - most of them made by an amazing team of volunteers who have been sewing nearly every day for the past year.  We'll meet some of those marvellous volunteers as this series goes on.

Meanwhile enjoy the poster.  It was an honour to take the photo.

Le grand jour est enfin arrivé! Nous célébrons le 300e anniversaire du bel orme de Gorbio. Aujourd'hui, il y aura un déjeuner et des danses sur la place du village, des jeux anciens et des saynètes en langue Gorbarine - la langue de Gorbio - encore parlée et maintenue en vie par l'Association Sota-Orme. Il y a aussi une fabuleuse exposition de 300 photos, quelques unes récentes et  de nombreuses anciennes, toutes montrant l'arbre au cours du temps et faisant ce qu'il fait le mieux: être le lieu de rassemblement pour tous les événements du village.

Demain, une grande messe dans l'église suivie d'un apéritif pour les villageois. L'arbre recevra le label officiel d'« Arbre remarquable de France". Plus tard,  un concert donné par l'Ensemble Baroque de Nice aura lieu dans l'église.

Seuls ceux d'entre nous habillés en costume du 18ème siècle pourront  participer au repas - mais bien sûr, on peut venir pour voir ou regarder ce que les caméras de télévision filmeront.

Cette affiche comporte 8 des villageois vêtus de leurs costumes du 18e siècle - la plupart d'entre eux faits par une formidable équipe de bénévoles qui les ont cousus presque tous les jours, pendant l'année écoulée. Nous verrons certains de ces merveilleux bénévoles dans la suite de cette série.

Early One Morning ...

Tôt le matin à Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Nous regardons vers Menton et au-delà vers l'Italie. Sur la gauche, nichée au creux des collines, c'est la vieille ville de Menton.

A Gift in my Garden

Suddenly, one day, this sunflower appeared in my garden.   I've never planted a sunflower in any of the gardens in any of the countries in which I've lived. No idea why not, because I love sunflowers.

Anyway there it was - a gift in my garden.

As they say, 'what comes around goes around.' I feed the birds sunflower seeds and they drop one to thank me.

Soudain, un jour, ce tournesol est apparu dans mon jardin. Je n'ai jamais planté de tournesol dans aucun des jardins dans aucun des pays où j'ai vécu. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, puisque j'aime les tournesols.

Quoi qu'il en soit il était là, un cadeau dans mon jardin.

Comme on  dit, «un prêté pour un rendu." Je nourris les oiseaux avec des graines de tournesol et ceux-ci en laissent tomber pour me remercier.

The Twizy in Gorbio

Look who I met in Gorbio village yesterday! Isn't this the cutest little car? It's a Renault Twizy, electric of course. Does 100 kilometres on a charged battery. One seat at the front and a tiny seat at the back. The owner let me sit in it - really comfortable. He loves Apple so much (me too!) he put a sticker on the back!

You see loads of little electric cars, of all makes, in Monaco and indeed they are really sensible to whizz around Monte Carlo but this is the first one I've seen in Gorbio.

Talk about easy parking!

Regardez qui j'ai rencontré dans le village de Gorbio hier!  N'est-ce pas la plus mignonne des petites voitures? C'est une Renault Twizy, électrique bien sûr .Elle parcourt 100 kilomètres avec une batterie chargée. Un siège à l'avant et un petit siège à l'arrière. Le propriétaire m'a laissée m'asseoir dedans - vraiment confortable. Il aime tellement Apple (moi aussi!) qu'il a mis un autocollant à l'arrière.

Vous voyez des tas de petites voitures électriques, de toutes marques, à Monaco et en effet elles sont vraiment utiles pour circuler autour de Monte-Carlo mais c'est la première que j'ai vue dans Gorbio.

Vous imaginez quel stationnement facile!
