La Fête du Citron (Corso) - the Brazilians

Of course it wouldn't be a 'corso' without the beautiful girls. They are known as 'bresilliens' in France, doubtless in reference to the celebrated carnival in Rio. Whether or not they all come from Brazil, who knows? I don't think anyone cares... so long as they are here and wearing as little as possible!

Bien sûr, un « corso » ne s'envisagerait pas sans de belles filles. En France, on les appelle  des « brésiliennes », sans doute en référence au célèbre carnaval de Rio. Viennent-elles toutes oui ou non du Brésil, qui le sait? Je ne pense pas que quiconque s'en soucie ... tant qu'elles  sont là et le plus légèrement vêtues que possible!

La Fête du Citron - the Gardens from Above

Last Tuesday was such a lovely day. Well not the weather, the sun hid her face as you can see. I met two photographer friends, dear Sylvie Matthiew, who lives and loves Menton and has her own blog. And Patrick Hanez from Nice. I only have to breathe the same air as Patrick and I learn something new about photography or how I should be using my camera.

We ate a delicious lunch at Officina del Gusto and later, a treat awaited us. Thanks to Cathy and Patricia we were invited to take photographs from the 2nd floor terrace of the Palais de l'Europe.

Mardi dernier fut une très belle journée. Pas vraiment à cause du temps, le soleil se cachait comme vous pouvez voir. J'ai rencontré deux amis photographes, ma chère Sylvie Matthieu qui habite à Menton , aime sa ville et a son propre blog.  Et Patrick Hanez de Nice. Il me suffit de respirer le même air que Patrick pour apprendre quelque chose de nouveau sur la photographie ou la façon dont je devrais utiliser mon appareil photo.

Nous avons pris un délicieux déjeuner à l' "Officina del Gusto" et plus tard, un plaisir nous attendait. Merci à Cathy et Patricia  qui nous ont  invités à prendre des photos depuis  la terrasse du 2e étage du Palais de l'Europe.

La Fête du Citron - Enter Here!

If you visit Menton for the Fete du Citron, your visit will normally start at the Jardin Bioves which hold all the static motifs - this is the entrance. 

You can watch the Corso (parade) which takes place each Sunday for three weeks .  There is also a Night Corso.  And you can  also visit these gardens at night when they will be lit up for your pleasure.

Si vous visitez Menton pour la Fête du Citron, votre visite devra commencer normalement au Jardin Biovès où se trouvent tous les motifs fixes - ceci est l'entrée.
Vous pouvez assister au Corso ( défilé ) qui a lieu chaque dimanche pendant trois semaines. Il y a également un Corso nocturne. Il est possible de  visiter ces jardins la nuit quand ils sont illuminés pour votre plaisir.

The First Gay Marriage in Gorbio

Gorbio recently celebrated its first gay marriage. The Mayor of Gorbio, Monsieur Michel Isnard, was proud to officiate at the marriage between Jean and Patrick. Congratulations to the newly weds.

The annual Fete du Citron started yesterday and this year we are '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.' Meet the Giant Squid and the Octopus, each created with oranges and lemons, carefully fixed, one by one, to wire supports fixed on enormous frames.

La Fête du Citron annuelle a commencé hier et cette année nous sommes "20 000 lieues sous les Mers." Voici le Calamar Géant et la Pieuvre, réalisés avec des oranges et des citrons fixés soigneusement, un par un, sur des supports métalliques posés sur d'énormes cadres.

Today is the first day of the Fete du Citron but yesterday, as always, it was the day Menton's children dress up, throw confetti and generally go bananas.  The Carnival of the Children is the best fun!

Menton's Orange Trees

If the trees in Menton are laden with oranges, then you know it must be time for the 'Fete du Citron.' And indeed it is - it all kicks off on Saturday - this year's theme: '20,000 Leagues under the Sea.'

The Day the Road fell Down

These photos show where part of the Route de Gorbio fell 30 metres during the endless rains we've had. It will take at least two months to repair. If you walk you can pass by the narrow area to the right of the photo below. If you are in a car - turn around!

The Broc Troc took place last weekend in t he Palais de l'Europe. Hundreds of stands of antiques, collectables, junk and second-hand clothes and often the people selling are as interesting as what they are selling.

Le Broc Troc a eu lieu le week end  dernier, au Palais de l'Europe. Des centaines de stands d'antiquités,d' objets de collection, de bazar, de vêtements d'occasion et souvent de vendeurs qui sont aussi intéressants que la marchandise qu'ils vendent.

The Long Road Home

The narrow road on the left is the only way those of us cut off from the village of Gorbio can get to and from Menton.  I took this photo my way home from Menton yesterday morning and already these guys have removed a ton of mess. It was far worse when I drove in the opposite direction earlier.

The road is called the Col de Garde and is very narrow, covered in mud and fallen rocks and trees from the recent rains but at least it's passible so long as you watch out for the enormous pot holes. and of course any oncoming cars and trucks.  Hopefully the main Route de Gorbio between where I live and Menton will be open soon. The road to the village will be closed though for approximately three months.  A nightmare for those who live in the village.

Difficult for all of us but a disaster for the poor people who have destabilised homes and falling land, verandas and pools and have had to leave their homes.

L'étroite route sur la gauche est l'unique voie permettant d'aller à Menton et d'en revenir pour nous qui sommes dans la vallée de Gorbio. J'ai pris cette photo en rentrant chez moi depuis Menton, hier matin, et déjà ces gars avaient enlevé une tonne d'éboulis. C'était bien pire plus tôt quand j'étais passée à l'aller.    

La route qui s'appelle route du Col de Garde, est très étroite, couverte de boue, de rochers et d'arbres tombés à la suite des récentes pluies mais au moins c'est un passage possible à condition de ne pas tenir compte des nids de poule et bien sûr de toutes les voitures et les camions venant en sens inverse. Espérons que la principale route de Gorbio, entre l'endroit où j'habite et Menton sera réouverte prochainement. En revanche, cette même route en direction du village restera fermée pendant environ trois mois. Un cauchemar pour ceux qui vivent dans le village.   

C'est difficile pour nous tous, mais c'est un désastre pour les pauvres gens qui ont dû quitter leurs maisons déstabilisées, leurs vérandas et leurs piscines emportées par des glissements de terrain.

The Folly

This strange building stands high up on Cap Martin.  Originally built for a Mr. Singer, who started building in before the 2nd World War. He tragically died in a concentration camp and it
remained unfinished for years. Later it was bought by the owner of a celebrated restaurant on Cap Martin, Le Pirate, who renovated it into the apartments we see today. Thankyou for Virginia Lacasse and Martine Quaranta for this information.

Cet étrange bâtiment se trouve sur le  haut du Cap Martin.  A l'origine, sa construction a débuté avant la 2ème guerre mondiale pour un M. Singer.  Celui-ci est mort tragiquement dans un camp de
concentration et le bâtiment  est resté inachevé pendant des années. Plus tard, il a été racheté par le propriétaire du célèbre restaurant Le Pirate au Cap Martin, qui l' a rénové en appartements tels que nous voyons aujourd'hui. Merci à Virginie Lacasse et Martine Quaranta pour cette information.
