The 'Sheep Workshop' - Mouth Ulcers in a Lamb

The children didn't just get to touch and later hold some of the lambs but they were given a lesson in their care.  Here Rene is explaining that lambs can get mouth ulcers (take a look and you will see the redness in the lamb's mouth).  This is cured by using iodised glycerine.  The mouth ulcers are also called muguet in France, which funnily enough the the French word for Lily of the Valley.

 Les enfants n'ont pas seulement touché et tenu certains agneaux, ils ont aussi  appris comment les soigner. Ici, René est en train d'expliquer  que les agneaux peuvent avoir des aphtes (regardez bien et vous verrez la rougeur dans la bouche de l'agneau). Ceci se  guérit à l'aide de glycérine iodée. Les aphtes sont également appelés "muguet."

Yesterday, JLED, the organisation that provides so many activities for children and pre-adolescents in the village of Gorbio arranged a visit to local sheep farmer,  Rene, who kindly opened his gates to a lot of excited children.   Here they are posing at the end of the visit with a few of the lambs.

Hier, le JLED, l'association qui propose  beaucoup  d'activités aux enfants et pré-adolescents dans le village de Gorbio, a organisé une visite chez René, l'agriculteur et éleveur de brebis local, lequel a gentiment ouvert ses portes à un grand nombre d'enfants enthousiasmés. Ici, ils posent à la fin de la visite avec quelques-uns des agneaux.

Rosa Sénateur La Follette

Roses tumble over the Anglican church in Menton. I'm pretty sure that rose is called Sénateur La Follette as I have it in my own garden. Lovely isn't it?

Rebuilding the Route de Gorbio

The rebuilding of the road to Gorbio is coming along fast. It fell around 30 metres earlier this year when so much of this region suffered massive damage due to excess rain. The is the rock fall that has cut off the village from Menton. It's due to re-open by the end of April. You can see where pedestrians can pass behind the barrier.

La reconstruction de la route de Gorbio avance rapidement. Il y a quelques temps, elle s'était effondrée d' environ 30 mètres au moment où  cette région a subi d'énormes dégâts à cause de l'excès de pluie. La chute de rochers a coupé la liaison village - Menton. La réouverture de la route est prévue  d'ici la fin Avril. On peut voir le passage que peuvent emprunter les piétons, derrière la barrière. 

 

Municipal Elections 2014 - the Aperitif

An aperitif, along with delicious food prepared by Patricia Mangoni, is on offer to the villagers following the inauguration of the town council.  Even Boutchette, the Bassett Hound from the Restaurant Beausejour has come along, hoping someone might drop a crumb or two!

Un apéritif, avec de délicieux plats préparés par Patricia Mangoni, est proposé aux villageois après l'installation du conseil municipal. Même Boutchette, le basset du restaurant Beauséjour est là, en espérant que quelqu'un ferait tomber une ou deux  miettes ! 

Municipal Elections 2014 - Laying the Wreath

Following the official inauguration of the new Municipal Council the Mayor and his team walk towards the War Memorial where the 2nd Deputy, Madame Arlette Pastor, lays the traditional wreath. And then everyone sings la Marseillaise.

Après l'installation officielle du nouveau conseil municipal, le maire et son équipe marchent vers le Monument aux Morts où la 2ème adjointe, Madame Arlette Pastor, pose la gerbe traditionnelle. Puis tout le monde chante la Marseillaise. 

Municipal Elections 2014 - Gorbio's Conseil Municipal

Every six years in France we vote in our local elections.  Here is our fabulous mayor Michel Isnard (centre) with his four 'adjoints' and the rest of the town council.

Before this photo was taken, there was a lot of paperwork to complete and then each member had to vote for his or her choice of mayor and after that, a second vote was held for the deputy mayor.   Each vote is placed in an envelope and then at the end, read out and counted.  This is open to the public and as you can imagine, there was a lot of applause at the end.

In the smaller photo you see the 2nd deputy, Mme. Arlette Pastor, the Mayor, Michel Isnard and the 1st deputy, Roland Larbre.

Tous les six ans en France, nous votons pour nos élections municipales. Voici notre fabuleux maire Michel Isnard (au centre) avec ses quatre « adjoints » et le reste du conseil municipal. 
  
Avant  de prendre cette photo, il y a eu beaucoup de documents à remplir, chaque élu a du voter pour choisir le maire et ensuite un second vote a eu lieu pour l'élection des adjoints au maire. Chaque bulletin  était placé dans une enveloppe puis les enveloppes étaient dépouillées. Le public était présent et comme vous pouvez l'imaginer, il y eut beaucoup d'applaudissements à la fin.
 
Dans la petite photo (gauche a droit) vous voyez la 2e adjointe, Mme Arlette Pastor, le maire, Michel Isnard et le 1er adjoint, Roland Larbre.

Municipal Elections 2014 - 'We are the Champions!'

Yesterday was a day of great celebration in the medieval village of Gorbio. After the municipal elections of last Sunday, our wonderful mayor, Monsieur Michel Isnard, was re-elected for the third time with a majority of nearly 69% of the vote.

Following the official inauguration of the new Municipal Council and the traditional placing of a wreath at the war memorial, an aperitif was offered to the population outside the town hall. And finally, the mayor and his team with their families and friends happily lunched at the Bar / Restaurant Les Terrasses.
 
Here on the left is Mayor Michel Isnard with his third Adjoint,  Monsieur Alain Porre.  They are doubtless singing "We Are the Champions" - and so they are!

Hier était un jour de grande fête dans le village médiéval de Gorbio. Après les élections municipales de dimanche dernier, notre fabuleux maire, Monsieur Michel Isnard, a été réélu pour la troisième fois avec une majorité de près de 69% des voix.

Suite à l'installation officielle du nouveau Conseil Municipal et la remise traditionnelle d'une gerbe au monument aux morts, un apéritif était offert à la population devant la mairie. A Village Baptism - the Dragées

The basket in the centre of the display is filled with sugared almonds for the guests. As each guest leaves he or see can choose which toy they'd like. I chose a teddy bear. Merci!

And in the small photo look at this charming table decoration - a tiny glass pacifier.

Le panier est rempli de dragées pour les invités. Au départ de chaque invité, celui-ci regarde et choisit le sujet qu'il préfère. J'ai choisi un ours en peluche. Merci!

A Village Baptism - Raphaël.

This little charmer is Nolan's cousin, Raphaël. His baptism took place in June last year. In the smaller photo you see him clutching his silver spoon.

Ce petit charmeur est le cousin de Nolan, Raphaël. Son baptême a eu lieu en Juin l'année dernière. Dans la petite photo que vous le voyez serrant sa cuillère d'argent.

A Village Baptism - the 'pièce montée'

After a delicious lunch at the Bar/Restaurant Les Terrasses in Gorbio, the pièce montée arrives. That's proud Papa of baby Nolan on the right. This is a traditional cake for a baptism and is made of dozens of choux pastry balls filled with vanilla or chocolate creme anglaise. It's delicious - too delicious! This pièce montée in the form of a child's cradle was created by the talented Gerald Canet, a well-known patissier/chocolatier who has a shop in Menton's market. Après un délicieux déjeuner au Bar / Restaurant Les Terrasses à Gorbio, la « pièce montée » arrive. Sur la droite, c'est le fier Papa de bébé Nolan. Il s'agit d'un gâteau traditionnel pour un baptême et il  se compose de dizaines de petits choux remplis avec de crème anglaise au vanille ou chocolat. C'est délicieux - trop délicieux! Cette « pièce montée » sous la forme d' un berceau d'enfant a été réalisée par le talentueux Gérald Canet, pâtissier-chocolatier bien connu qui a un étal dans le marché de Menton. A Village Baptism - Aperitif!

After the baptism, the family and friends will lunch at the Bar/Restaurant les Terrasses in the village, but first an aperitif, served by the lovely Sarah, in the square. Can there be a lovelier setting? How lucky children are to be born and brought up in this wonderful village.

Après le baptême, la famille et les amis iront déjeuner au Bar / Restaurant les Terrasses au  village, mais d'abord un apéritif est servi par la belle Sarah, sur  la place. Peut-il y avoir un cadre plus beau? Quelle chance ont les enfants chanceux de naitre et de grandir dans ce merveilleux village.

A Village Baptism - Bonbons!

The tradition after a baptism is for the family to throw sweets and sometimes coins in front of the church for the village children to collect.  They have all arrived, as you see, with their plastic bags at the ready!  Patricia, the mother of baby Nolan, has a beautiful decorated basket which is filled with sweets for the children.

La tradition après un baptême est pour la famille de jeter des bonbons et des pièces parfois en face de l'église pour les enfants du village pour recueillir. Ils sont tous arrivés, comme vous le voyez, avec leurs sacs en plastique au prêt! Patricia, la mère de bébé Nolan, a un beau panier décoré qui est rempli de bonbons pour les enfants.

A Village Baptism - the Children for the Catechism

After the baptism, the children, in church for the catechism, gather around the altar. Note the copper font in the foreground. There is a beautiful, ancient stone one near the entrance to the church but it would be impossible to move into this position for a baptism.

Après le baptême, les enfants du catéchisme se rassemblent autour de l'autel.  Notez le  bénitier de baptême en cuivre, au premier plan. Il y en a un autre très beau, en pierre antique, près de l'entrée de l'église, mais il serait impossible de le déplacer à cet endroit  pour un baptême.

A Village Baptism - the Lighted Candle

A candle is lit which is then held by the baby's parents and as many as can whilst the priest blesses the child. The symbolism is that the spirit of God, through the flame, enters into the child. Later, the godfather sits holding the lit candle for the rest of the ceremony.

Une bougie est allumée puis tenue par les parents de l'enfant et par plusieurs autres personnes tandis  que le prêtre bénit l'enfant. C'est l'esprit de Dieu qui, symboliquement représenté par la flamme, descend sur l'enfant. Par la suite, c'est  le parrain qui tient  la bougie allumée pour le reste de la cérémonie.

A Village Baptism - the Sign of the Cross

The baptism of Nolan takes place during mass in Gorbio's beautiful Church of Saint Barthelmy. The children as there as part of their learning process of the catechism. The priest thought it would be a good idea to let them participate in the baptism - and as you see one youngster is taking photos with his iPad, another holds the microphone.

The priest is making the sign of the cross on little Nolan's forehead. His godfather stands next to his mother and behind him, is his aunt. In other photos you see Nolan's godmother drying his head following the baptism.

Le baptême de Nolan a lieu pendant la messe dans la belle église de Saint Barthélemy à Gorbio. Les enfants du catéchisme étaient là ce jour là. Le prêtre en a profité pour les faire participer au baptême - et vous voyez qu'un jeune prend des photos avec son iPad tandis qu'un autre tient le microphone.

Le prêtre fait le signe de la croix sur le tête du petit Nolan. Son parrain est à côté de sa mère et derrière lui, c'est sa tante. Sur d'autres photos on voit la marraine de Nolan qui lui sèche la tête après l'onction du  baptême.

Et Nolan dort pendant tout ce temps ...

A Village Baptism - Nolan or is it Fred Astaire!

This little angel is just over 2 months old and it's the day of his christening. Nolan is in his pram, fast asleep, a few minutes before the service in the village church. 

Don't you just love his outfit!  I quite expected him to wake up and do a tap dance like Fred Astaire.

 Ce petit ange a un peu plus de deux mois et c'est le jour de son baptême. Nolan est endormi, dans son landau, quelques minutes avant le service dans l'église du village.

Quel joli costume n'est ce pas! Je m'attendais tout à fait à ce qu'il se réveille et exécute un pas de danse comme Fred Astaire.

A Village Baptism - Winona

Here she has a beautiful new dress in honour of her new baby brother Nolan's christening and she's playing outside the Restaurant Beausejour in Gorbio's village square. More tomorrow ...
