One fine day!

We've had the worst weather here. Endless rain.  I think the highest rainfall ever in October and it continues. However, yesterday the sun shone. Tomorrow the rain is due back.  So here we are, just below the cemetery looking towards Italy. The old port on the right and in the distance, the Port of Garavan and beyond that Italy.

Nous avons eu le pire temps ici. De la pluie sans fin. Je pense que ce sont les plus fortes précipitations jamais tombées en Octobre et cela continue. Cependant  hier, le soleil brillait. Aujourd'hui, on prévoit le retour de la  pluie. Donc nous sommes ici juste en dessous du cimetière, regardant vers l'Italie. Sur la droite le vieux port, au loin le port de Garavan et au-delà, l'Italie.

Just Ducky

We met Valmatea the other day with her grandmother, Jacqueline.  She adores all animals and has such an easy way with them.  Here she is with one of her grandmother's ducks.

Family Life in Gorbio

Jacqueline is the lady in Gorbio village who grows vegetables, keeps chickens and has a pet lamb. Here she is with her granddaughter, Valmatea.

Game of Stones

This is the second photo from a few I took of this little boy playing with a stone near the Monument to the Fallen in Roquebrune village.  It's nice to see a child playing with something that isn't a portable device.

The Dog with the Yellow Glasses!

Someone has put a pair of yellow spectacles (they are made of paper) on the French bulldog in the photo!  Thanks Sandrine for telling me about it. I popped down to Menton yesterday to take a snap - rain or no rain! I wouldn't normally promote my own photos with so many amazing photographers exhibiting, but I couldn't resist showing you the yellow spectacles.

There are only 10 days left for you to visit the Jardin Bioves in Menton and see the exhibition of 80 photographs by 26 photographers - members of PhotoMenton, Collectif Photon de Nice and Club Image de Monaco. After that, it's all systems go for PhotoMenton in the Palais de l'Europe which starts on the 15th November.

Quelqu'un a mis une paire de lunettes jaunes (elles sont faites en papier) sur le bouledogue français de la photo! Merci Sandrine pour m'avoir prévenue de cela. J'ai filé à Menton hier pour  prendre ce clin d'oeil - avec  pluie ou sans  pluie! Normalement, je ne veux  pas promouvoir mes propres photos parmi tant de photographies étonnantes présentées, mais je ne pouvais pas résister à vous montrer les lunettes jaunes.

Il ne vous  reste plus que 10 jours pour visiter le Jardin Biovès à Menton et voir l'exposition de 80 photographies de 26 photographes - membres de PhotoMenton, Collectif Photon de Nice et de Monaco Image Club. The Span Bridge in Dolceacqua

Recently I posted a photo of the beautiful span bridge in Dolceacqua. (on left) The water was absolutely still water giving a perfect reflection.  But actually I prefer this - love a slight wobble in the reflected buildings...!

Récemment, j'ai posté une photo du bon pont en dos d'âne de Dolceacqua. (a gauche) L'eau était absolument immobile, cela avait donné un reflet parfait . Mais en fait, je préfère ceci - j'aime une légère oscillation dans les bâtiments réfléchis ... !

The Silk Floss Tree

This beautiful tree is to be found near the Musee Cocteau. It's called the Silk Floss tree, or in Latin, Chorisia Speciosa.

Colours of Autumn

You'll find the 17th century Chateau of the Counts of Malaussène at the top of Gorbio village.  Photographed yesterday, the Virginia Creeper that covers the facade is changing into its autumn colours.

Fete du Four - Kisses

Another of the many things I love about France is that everyone kisses everyone.  Even if one is in the middle of carving the meat.  Oleg plonks a big fat kiss on his friend, Antoine.

Fete du Four - Sharing

At the Fete of the Ancient Communal Oven in Gorbio,  everyone shares their food with everyone else.  You can end up eating an awful lot more than you intended! But it's too good to say 'no!'

Fete du Four - Roast Lamb and Flageolet Beans

Fete du Four - Wild Boar

Antoine carves the meat, burnt on the outside but pink inside. The meat is wild boar killed by village hunters.

Antoine découpe la viande, brûlée à l'extérieur mais rose à l'intérieur. C'est la viande d'un sanglier tué par les chasseurs du village.

The meat has finished roasting and Michel (the Mayor of Gorbio) and Antoine carry the dishes on an enormous makeshift tray to the waiting villagers.

Fete du Four - the Ancient Oven and Franco

The building that houses the ancient oven is small. And dark. And very very hot! Franco is pulling out a cooked dish on the paddle, which you see has an incredibly long handle - he's making sure he doesn't hit anything with it. The length of the paddle (and it's longer than you see in this photo) gives you an idea of how deep the oven is.

 Le bâtiment  qui abrite l' ancien four est petit. Et sombre. Et très très chaud! Franco retire un plat cuisiné sur la palette laquelle comme on le voit,  a un manche incroyablement long - il s'assure qu'il ne touche pas quelque chose avec elle. La longueur de la palette (et c'est plus que ce que l'on voit sur cette photo)  donne une idée de la profondeur du four.

Fete du Four - Lunch under the Olive Trees

One of my favourite fêtes in Gorbio is the Fete du Four (the oven). It's the one day in the year when the ancient village oven is lit.  We all bring food, some will be cooked in the oven, others will bring salads and desserts. And of course there are aperitifs and lots of wine.  The Fete takes place under the olive trees in the square at the top of the village and it's only for those who live in Gorbio. So come
along with me and enjoy.

Une de mes fêtes favorites à Gorbio est la Fête du  Four. C'est le seul jour de l'année où l'ancien four du village est allumé. Tout le monde amène un ou plusieurs plats dont  certains seront cuits dans le four, d'autres apportent  des salades ou  des desserts. Et bien sûr il y a des apéritifs et beaucoup de vin. La Fête a lieu sous les oliviers de la place en haut du village et elle est organisée seulement pour ceux qui vivent au village. Alors, venez avec moi et profitez de.

Chocolat Poulain

Chocolat Poulain is one of the oldest brands of chocolate in France. The icon of the brand is a jumping foal, which is a wordplay on the creator's name "Poulain", which is French for foal.

Victor-Auguste Poulain began the mass production of chocolate in 1848 in Blois, France, before forming a limited company in 1893. He believed that a commercial future in chocolate would be found by selling to the masses and was innovative in industrialising the production of chocolate and in widespread marketing campaigns targeting children and families.

The company was bought by Cadbury Schweppes in 1988.

La Fête de la Branda - a Child of the Village

People are gathering in Gorbio's village square for the Fete de la Branda. Little Soumaya sees me, runs towards the camera and nearly knocks me over! She loves having her photo taken and also teasing me!

Le Masaguen at Roquebrune village

You are looking at what used to be the post office in the medival village of Roquebrune. It's now a very pretty village shop that sells groceries with excellent bread, fresh fruit and vegetables. Meet Nathalie the owner who told me that the name 'le Masaguen' means 'shop' in the Roquebrune dialect.  You can see how close the word is to the French word for shop, 'magasin.'

Vous voyez  ce qui était autrefois le bureau de poste du village médiéval de Roquebrune. C'est maintenant une très jolie boutique du village qui vend de l'épicerie avec d'excellents pains, fruits et légumes frais. Voici Nathalie la propriétaire qui m'a dit que le nom de la boutique "le Masaguen " signifie "le Magasin" en dialecte Roquebrunois. Vous pouvez remarquer comme les deux mots sont proches.
