Giant Insects

In the background, the Sablettes beach and in the foreground, work continues to remove rocks and soil to create a new underground car park. Like a lot of massive mechanical insects!

Cars used to park here but when it's finished, the area will be arranged as a paved promenade with trees. Lots of noise and dust but with the promise of good things to come.

Dans le fond, la plage des Sablettes et au premier plan, les travaux qui  se poursuivent pour enlever roches et terre afin de construire un nouveau parc de stationnement souterrain. Comme beaucoup d'énormes insectes mécaniques! 

Avant les véhicules se garaient ici mais quand ce sera terminé, la zone sera aménagée en promenade pavée,  avec des arbres. Beaucoup de bruit et de poussière mais avec la promesse de belles choses à venir.

Baby run

Gorbio. Looks like baby has enjoyed her first 8 kilometre run! Only kidding, of course. Proud Daddy grabbed his baby just before he ran to the finish line.

The Runners

Last weekend was a weekend of sport in Gorbio village. This is the start of the 8 kilometre run up and down the hills.

A martial arts demonstration in Gorbio yesterday. An apple is placed on the end of the sword - and then - wham! - it is destroyed!

Alessandro

Last Friday I attended the vernissage of Rudy Boyer's excellent exhibition of street photography.Bibliotech Municipale in Menton until 31st October.

Lots of local photographers, especially street photographers, were there but the best treat for me was to finally meet Alessandro Prato Atko. Alessandro is from Ventimigla, just across the Italian border but now lives in Imperia. I have followed  Alessandro's photography for a long time and it was so good to finally see him.

Vendredi dernier,  j'ai assisté au vernissage de la superbe exposition de photographie de rue de Rudy Boyer.  Bibliothèque  Municipale de Menton jusqu'au 31 Octobre.

Beaucoup de photographes locaux et  en particulier les photographes de rue étaient là mais, la meilleur plaisir pour moi,  c'était de rencontrer enfin Alessandro Prato Atko. Alessandro est de Vintimille, de l'autre côté de la frontière italienne, mais il vit maintenant à Imperia. J'ai suivi la photographie d'Alessandro pendant depuis longtemps et c'était tellement agréable de le voir enfin.

This is the adorable cat belonging to a friend who lives in Gorbio village. He reminds me of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. He's called Igloo and of course he is a Persian cat.

Fête de la Branda - 'Au Baiser du Mitron'

One of the joys of the Fete de la Branda is that Kevin le Meur, Menton's artisan baker, brings some of his wonderful breads and patisserie, to Gorbio.  In this photo -  three generations of the family, Kevin, his mother and his young daughter who is working out the change for Gunilla, on the left.  I love his 'proud Papa' expression.

You can find Kevin's totally delicious breads and cakes at 'Au Baiser du Mitron' in Menton's Municipal Market and at his shop in the pedestrian street.

Un des plaisirs de la Fête de la Branda c'est que Kevin le Meur, artisan boulanger de Menton, apporte une sélection de ses pains et de ses pâtisseries à Gorbio. Sur cette photo - trois générations de la famille - Kevin, sa mère et qui sa fille qui sert Gunilla, sur la gauche. J'adore son expression de  « fier papa  ».

Vous pouvez trouver l'ensemble de ses délicieux pains et gâteaux  'Au Baiser du Mitron » dans le marché municipal de Menton et dans sa boutique de la rue piétonne.

All sorts of wonderful food is for sale at Gorbio's Fete de la Branda.  Here is meat and cheeses from an Italian who lives at La Gaude.  Not sure the pig's head is for me though ...!

Fête de la Branda

Despite the terrible rains and flooding of the night before, yesterday was a glorious day in Gorbio village for the annual Fete de la Branda.

Gorbio was spared the horrors of loss of life further along the coast. Unfortunately around 11h00 there was a massive landfall which totally blocked the main road to the village from Menton and which naturally made the attendance less than normal. (You can still access the village but it's a longer journey via the Col de Garde or the Route DFL

More tomorrow, including the visit by our friends from Dolceacqua, with whom Gorbio is twinned.

Malgré les terribles pluies et les inondations de la veille, c'était hier un jour magnifique au village de Gorbio avec l'annuelle Fête de la Branda.

Gorbio a été épargné par les horreurs de la perte de vies humaines comme plus loin le long de la côte. Malheureusement vers 11h00 il y a eu un énorme éboulement qui a bloqué totalement la route principale reliant le village à Menton ce qui a naturellement amené moins de visiteurs que d'habitude. ( On peut toujours accéder au village mais le voyage est plus long soit par le Col de Garde ou la Route DFL )

La suite  demain, y compris la visite de nos amis de Dolceacqua, avec qui Gorbio est jumelée.

Gorbio. This is Mika with one of his 10 adorable puppies.  They are a mix of American Bulldog, Ipso (that's Dad) and Mama, who is called Gandja, and is a mix of Boxer and Golden Retriever.

Not long now and they'll be looking for their forever homes.

The 'Da Mitchou' wedding

Yesterday Olivier and Michelle (Mitchou), owners of Menton's well-known restaurant Da Mitchou on the beach at Garavan, got married in Gorbio. With over 300 guests the wedding was held in the square outside the Mairie.

Hier, Olivier et Michelle, les propriétaires de restaurant bien connu de Menton "Da Mitchou" sur la plage de Garavan, se sont mariés à Gorbio. Avec plus de 300 invités, le mariage a eu lieu sur la place devant la mairie.

The Fete of the Communal Oven

The Fete of the Communal Oven in Gorbio.   The eating and drinking is almost over - children sit at their special table and Auriane and Romain dance.  Meanwhile, Michel Isnard, our ever hard-working mayor, who does so much for our village,  clears the dishes.

La Fête du Four Communal à Gorbio. On a  presque terminé de manger et de boire - les enfants sont assis à leur table spéciale et Auriane et Romain dansent. Pendant ce temps, Michel Isnard, notre maire qui ne cesse jamais de travailler dur et qui fait tant pour notre village, débarrasse les plats.

The Fete du Four took place yesterday in Gorbio village. Once a year the ancient communal oven is lit and everyone brings their dishes to be cooked by Franco. And then we eat and drink, dance and sing. Food is shared around and a good time had by all.

Here Auriane, who has two children of her own, is playing with Alice, the daughter of her neighbour. Gorbio is like that! One big family.

La Fête du Four a eu lieu hier dans le village de Gorbio. Une fois par an, l'ancien four communal est allumé et tout le monde apporte ses plats à cuire à Franco. Et puis on mange, on boit, on danse et on chante. Les plats sont partagée à la ronde  et c'est un bon moment pour tous.

Voici Auriane, maman de deux enfants, qui  joue avec Alice, la fille de sa voisine. Gorbio est comme ça! Une grande famille.

Bastion

This is the Bastion, the interior of which was renovated by Jean Cocteau himself and now houses a small part of his art. The rest, of course, is in the main Musée Cocteau.

Voici le Bastion dont l'intérieur a été rénové par Jean Cocteau lui-même et qui abrite aujourd'hui une petite partie de ses oeuvres. Le reste, bien sûr, se trouve dans le grand Musée Cocteau.

Bouchette, the Bassett Hound,  followed me as I climbed the tiny streets of Gorbio village.  When she got to this pump, she stood with her head under the tap waiting for me to turn the handle and give her a drink.

Portofino Pooch

Yesterday, a group of us from Gorbio, went on a trip to Portofino.  Couldn't resist this boy and his dog outside his parents' gallery in the port. The Jack Russell terrier is called Marquis.

Hier, avec un groupe de Gorbio, nous sommes allés en voyage à Portofino. Impossible de résister à ce garçon et son chien à l’extérieur de la galerie de ses parents sur le port. Le Jack Russell s'appelle Marquis.
