Coal Tits
Hoping the Coal tits will nest on my terrace this year. They did a few years ago but since then they visit to eat the sunflower seeds, but presumably have more comfortable accommodation elsewhere.
~

Goya and Philippe Loli
Yesterday, the population of Gorbio village was treated to a concert by the celebrated classical guitarist, Philippe Loli. He played the works of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco with a selection of five pieces on the theme of Goya's famous etchings which you see in the background.
This followed the traditional New Year speech by our wonderful mayor, Michel Isnard and after that champagne and the traditional galette du rois. It's wonderful to live in Gorbio!

A Rooster called 'Corn'
This is a new sundial that adorns a village house that Tonio and Martine bought in 2013 - hence the date along the top. The numbers 14, 15 and 16 are the only ones that are correctly exposed to the sun's southern light. The rooster is called 'Corn' and he was bought as a chick and became a much-loved pet - he came when called, he sat on Martine's lap and he would 'sing' when asked to do so! He was always free, except at night and he lived for 5 years until one day he was found by the side of the road, probably killed by a dog.
The sundial was painted by Francois, who created the beautiful trompe l'oeil design on the village church. And the motto? Quora soneràs canterai. This is written in the language of the village, Gorbarin and means 'when you ring the bell, I will sing!'
~

Death of a Palm
There have been two very large palms on this side of the village of Gorbio for as long as I can remember - and now there is only one. As you can see the other one has died. So sad. Many palms in the south of France have been decimated by the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), a type of beetle.
It's a native of Indonesia's islands and coasts of southern India, it is a species typically broadcasts in the south eastern Asia, it is known for the extensive damage made to coconut plantations.
~
