The Wyandotte

Isn't he a beautiful cockerel? He's a Wyandotte and lives with his three females in the gardens of the Clos du Peyronnet in Menton. The Wyandottes were a Red Indian tribe.

There was another wedding in Gorbio recently.  I don't have permission to show you the bride and groom photos,  but we can see some of the children and the donkeys - there were four adorable donkeys and three enchanting bridesmaids. 

This donkey is setting the scene with a big laugh alongside the eldest bridesmaid.

Il y a eu un autre mariage à Gorbio récemment. Je n'ai pas la permission de vous en montrer les photos du couple mais nous pouvons en voir quelques-unes des enfants et des ânes - il y avait quatre ânes adorables et trois ravissantes demoiselles d'honneur.

Imprint of Despair

So proud that this photo was awarded first prize in EMAP's competition, 'Imprints of Today'. I called it 'Imprint of Despair.'

I was in great company with so many beautiful images from so many talented photographers - you can see all the prize-winning photos along with 40 short-listed images at the Serre de la Madone, Menton until the 13th June.

Point a camera at an Italian and he'll immediately go into pose-mode - smile or stick out his tongue, as this guy did in Bari, Puglia - even on a scooter.   Love him!

An Italian 'Mama'

This Italian 'Mama is one of several women who make and sell 'orecchiette' in the Old Town of Bari. This famous pasta of Puglia is in created by hand in the shape of 'tiny ears'.  Her daughter sits outside the house making and selling her pasta on the street, Mama was inside in the cool. I want an Italian Mama like this lady!

Cette 'Mama' italienne est une des nombreuses femmes qui fabriquent et vendent des « orecchiette » dans la vieille ville de Bari. Ces célèbres pâtes des Pouilles sont confectionnées à la main en forme de « petites oreilles ». Sa fille fait et vend ses pâtes à l'extérieur de la maison sur la rue, Mama est à l'intérieur, dans la fraîcheur. J'aimerais une maman italienne comme cette dame!

Austere

One of Sospel's stark ancient streets - no paving, no painted walls.  Sospel is twenty kilometres above Menton and has the feel of a mountain town.  It was once staging post on the Old Salt Route (Route du Sel) that crossed the tollbridge across the Bévéra river.

Une des anciennes rues austères de Sospel, pas de pavés, pas de murs peints. Sospel se trouve à  vingt kilomètres au-dessus de Menton et ressemble à un village de montagne, si différent d'un village de colline comme Gorbio, où je vis. Il était autrefois une halte sur la vieille Route du Sel qui traversait le pont d'octroi sur la rivière Bévéra.

Puglia - Green, White and Red!

When I'm in need of an 'Italian fix' happily for me, the border is only 15 minutes away - but Puglia, way down in the south of Italy, is something else.  Two years ago, whilst taking Carla Coulson's fabulous photography workshop, I fell in love with the colours, the light, the people and the fabulous food. This is a street in Monopoli, in the province of Bari. I think they want us to know it's Italy!

Quand j'ai besoin d'un «fix italien» heureusement pour moi, la frontière se trouve à seulement 15 minutes - mais Les Pouilles, dans le sud de l'Italie c'est quelque chose d'autre.  Il y a deux ans, tout en suivant le fabuleux stage de photographie de Carla Coulson, je suis tombée amoureuse de ses couleurs, sa lumière, ses gens et  de sa merveilleuse cuisine. Voici une rue de Monopoli, dans la province de Bari.  Je pense qu'ils veulent que nous sachions que c'est l Italie!

Potter in Grottaglie

Recently I've been looking back at some photographs I took in Puglia two years ago when I participated in a truly great workshop given by the brilliant Carla Coulson.  This year she is holding another workshop - this time in Naples - and I'm going and can't wait!

This image was taken in Grottaglie, a village of ceramic factories where we had the opportunity to photograph artisans at work - like this wonderful gentleman.

Récemment, je regardais de nouveau quelques photos prises dans les Pouilles, il y a deux ans quand j'ai participé à un véritable grand stage organisé par la brillante Carla Coulson. Cette année, elle en organise un autre, à Naples cette fois -  j 'y participe et je suis impatiente!

Cette image a été prise à Grottaglie, un village d' usines de céramique où nous avons eu l'occasion de photographier les artisans au travail - comme ce merveilleux homme.

A Village Wedding - and a village walk

Our last day with this kind and beautiful couple as they walk through the village of Gorbio, their daughter holding the bride's train.  Many thanks to Xavier and Claire and their children, Emma and Maxime, for allowing me to share a few of their wedding photographs with you. A Village Wedding and Baptism - Celebration

The wedding and baptism ceremonies are over - and now the joy and happiness of a beautiful family: Xavier and Claire, adorable Emma ... and up the air, little Maxime.

A Village Wedding - and Baptism

Our Mayor always finds the perfect words for each wedding, and is always very funny, as you can see by the reactions of Xavier, Claire and their children.

The wedding was followed by a Republican baptism (also known as a civil baptism).  This is  a moral engagement expressing the godmothers' and godfathers' attachment to the child.  This Republican baptism was born under the French Revolution, at the time of the separation of Church and State.

Notre maire trouve toujours les mots justes pour chaque mariage et il est toujours très drôle, comme vous pouvez le voir avec les réactions de Xavier, Claire et leurs enfants. 
 
Le mariage a été suivi par un baptême républicain ( aussi connu comme un baptême civil ). Ceci est un engagement moral exprimant l'attachement à l'enfant des parrains et marraines.  Ce baptême républicain est né sous la Révolution française, au moment de la séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat.

A Village Wedding - the Bride

There was a wedding in Gorbio village last Saturday and I was so happy to have been invited to take the photographs. So, with the kind permission of the bride and groom, let me share with you, over the next few days, some of the beauty and joy of their big day.

In fact it was more than a wedding. First, there was the marriage ceremony in the Mairie and following that, a Republican baptism for the couple's two adorable children.

So meet Claire, the beautiful bride - she makes me think of a 1930s film star and that's daughter Emma, on the left - we'll meet her properly another day.

Samedi dernier, il y avait un mariage au village de Gorbio et je suis si heureuse d'avoir été invitée à prendre les photos. Ainsi, avec l'aimable autorisation de la mariée et du marié, permettez-moi de partager avec vous, au cours des prochains jours, une partie de la beauté et de la joie de leur grand jour.

En fait, c'était plus qu'un mariage. Tout d'abord, il y a eu la cérémonie de mariage dans la Mairie et ensuite, un baptême républicain pour les deux adorables enfants du couple.

Donc voici Claire, la belle mariée - elle me fait penser à une star de cinéma des années 1930 et à gauche, sa fille Emma que  nous reverrons un autre jour.

Restaurant Le Beausejour

Who would imagine you'd find a restaurant as beautiful as this in a small hill village above Menton? This is my favourite restaurant - anywhere - and it's in the village of Gorbio, where I live.  And not only is it beautiful but the food is fabulous too.  Restaurant Le Beauséjour has recently been awarded a Michelin 'plate' to go alongside its Michelin 'fork.'  The restaurant has been in the same family for four generation.  Bravo to Naila and Yvan Bracco and all the team.

Qui peut imaginer pouvoir trouver un restaurant aussi beau que celui-ci dans un petit village de colline au-dessus de Menton? C'est mon restaurant préféré - entre tous - et il se trouve dans le village de Gorbio, où je vis. Et non seulement il est beau mais la cuisine y est fabuleuse aussi. Restaurant Le Beauséjour a récemment reçu  'l'assiette' Michelin  pour aller aux côtés de sa 'fourchette' Michelin.  Le restaurant appartient à la même famille depuis quatre générations.  Bravo à Naïla et Yvan Bracco ainsi qu'à toute leur équipe.

What would we do without our friends? My friends mean so much to me - well everything really? Some live across seas and oceans and in different time zones, some much closer and one lives next door to me. And these two, Patrick and Emmanuelle, I met through photography. How lucky am I?

Que ferions-nous sans nos amis? Mes amis représentent  tellement pour moi - vraiment tout ! Certains vivent au-delà  des mers et des océans et dans différents fuseaux horaires, certains sont beaucoup plus proches dont une est ma voisine. Et ces deux-là, Patrick et Emmanuelle que j'ai rencontrés grâce à la photographie. Quelle chanceuse je suis!

Sometimes a reflection can surprise a photographer. Look at the lady in red on the left and then look at her reflection in the window on the right. Now how did that happen?
