Josephine Baker at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

This sculpture at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is of Josephine Baker the legendary singer, dancer and amazing woman who adopted 12 children - her Rainbow Tribe.  Later in life, a life that was beyond extraordinary, she was offered life-long accommodation at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin by Princess Grace of Monaco. The sculptor is Paul Pacotto.

A Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, cette sculpture représente Joséphine Baker, la  chanteuse/danseuse légendaire, et femme exceptionnelle qui a adopté 12 enfants - sa Tribu-Arc en ciel. Voting Day in Gorbio

Yesterday France went to the polls to vote for a new President. Polling in the medieval village of Gorbio took place at the Mairie.

For anyone that doesn't know the French system, there were 10 candidates, including current President Nicolas Sarkozy. His main rival is François Hollande. Yesterday though, was the first round of voting. Only if a candidate receives over 50% of the vote, and I don't think it has ever happened, would yesterday's vote be decisive. In fact, the top two candidates now go head to head in a second ballot in two weeks time. They are Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande.

Hier, la  France est alléé aux urnes pour élir un nouveau Président. Le scrutin au village médiéval de Gorbio se déroulait à la mairie.

Pour tous ceux qui ne connaissent pas le système français, il y avait 10 candidats, y compris le  président actuel, Nicolas Sarkozy. Son principal rival est François Hollande. Hier cependant, c'était le premier tour de scrutin. Ce n'est que si un candidat reçoit plus de 50% des voix, et je ne pense pas que cela ait déjà eu lieu, que le vote d'hier serait décisif. En fait, les deux premiers candidats en tête iront au second tour de scrutin dans deux semaines. Ce sont Nicolas Sarkozy et François Hollande.

The Lifeguards' Tower

The Common Iris

If it's spring then it must be time for the irises. This is the Common Iris and you see it everywhere in the south of France. And as you can see we've had rain lately - something the land has really needed.

Si c'est le printemps alors c'est aussi le temps des iris. Voici l'Iris Commune comme on en voit partout dans le sud de la France. Et comme vous pouvez le constater,  nous avons eu de la pluie ces derniers temps - une chose dont la terre avait vraiment besoin.

J'étais donc là, marchant le long de la rue Longue (la plus ancienne rue de la vieille ville de Menton) lorsque cette belle jeune fille m'a offert le plus beau sourire ...

The French-Italian Frontier

We're at the frontier between France and Italy looking back at Menton and Monaco in the distance.

The sloping roof you see to the right of the smaller photo, is the French customs office. Some people want to keep it as a listed building, others think it's really ugly! The actual line than divides France and Italy is slightly nearer to the camera and out of shot.

Nous sommes à la frontière entre la France et l'Italie, regardant Menton et Monaco dans le lointain.

Le toit en pente que vous voyez à la droite de la petite photo , c'est le bureau de douane français. Certaines personnes veulent le garder comme un bâtiment classé, d'autres pensent que c'est vraiment laid! La ligne réelle qui divise la France et l'Italie est légèrement plus proche de la caméra et hors champ.

Balzi Rossi - the Beach

I popped across the Italian border yesterday to shop at Latte, which is midway between Menton and Ventimiglia. On the way back a walk along the beach at Balzi Rossi seemed a good idea.

Balzi Rossi is at the border itself, on the Italian side. It's famous for its prehistoric caves - read about those by clicking on the link.

This gentleman is bravely testing the waters but he decided against a swim and turned back.

Hier, j'ai traversé la frontière italienne pour faire mes courses à Latte qui se trouve à mi-chemin entre Menton et Vintimille. Sur le chemin du retour une promenade le long de la plage des Balzi Rossi me semblait une bonne idée.

Les Balzi Rossi se situent à la frontière elle-même, du côté italien. Ils sont célèbres pour leurs grottes préhistoriques- en savoir plus sur elles-ci en cliquant sur ​​le lien.

Ce monsieur teste courageusement l'eau, mais il renonce au bain et s'en retourne.

Dining under Plastic

You hardly find a restaurant or bar in Menton these days without a plastic covered terrace. A good idea on a chilly night or a cold windy day. Soon, though, the plastic will be rolled up - those long, lazy days of summer aren't far away.

Aujourd'hui à Menton, vous trouverez difficilement un restaurant ou un bar sans une terrasse couverte en plastique. Une bonne idée pour une nuit glaciale ou une journée froide et ventée. Bientôt, cependant, le plastique sera enroulé - les longues journées de farniente de l'été ne sont pas loin.

A Walk above Gorbio - Dog Collar

This is a walk I've done dozens of times yet every time there are new things to see. The eye can't take it all in at once. For instance this old dog collar - it's obviously been here a while but I'd not noticed it.

I remember, when I lived in a Welsh valley (a lifetime ago), a friend visited and said, 'You could live here for ten years and still not see everything,' and now I know just what she meant.

C'est une promenade que j'ai faite des dizaines de fois, pourtant, chaque fois il y a de nouvelles choses à voir. L'œil ne peut pas tout saisir en une fois. Par exemple ce vieux collier de chien - il est évident qu'il est là depuis un moment mais je ne l'avais jamais remarqué.

Je me souviens, quand je vivais dans une vallée galloise ( il y a de cela une vie ), une amie m'a rendu visite et m'a dit: «Vous pourriez vivre ici depuis dix ans et ne pas avoir encore tout vu." Maintenant je sais exactement ce qu'elle voulait dire.

A Walk above Gorbio - Euphorbia

The hills are covered with this Euphorbia at the moment. Well I think it's a Euphorbia. Green flowers seem to emit an air of calm - no colour to shout at you.

En ce moment, les collines sont couvertes de cette euphorbe. Effectivement, je pense que c'est une euphorbe. Les fleurs vertes inspirent un sentiment d'apaisement - pas de couleur qui choque.

A Walk above Gorbio - Mist and Nathalie

Sometimes it's misty in the hills. And so it was on the day the beautiful Nathalie of Avignon in Photos' fame paid a welcome visit. After an excellent lunch at the Beausejour Restaurant in Gorbio, we took a little walk above the village. The same walk I showed a short while ago but in totally different weather and light. As you can see Nathalie is getting 'Up Close and Personal' with her subject.

Parfois, les collines sont dans la brume. C'était ainsi le jour où la belle Nathalie,du fameux Avignon in Photos me rendait une
belle visite. Après un excellent déjeuner au Restaurant Beauséjour de Gorbio, nous avons fait une petite promenade au-dessus du village. La même promenade que j'ai montrée il y a quelques jours, mais avec un temps et une lumière totalement différents. Comme vous le voyez, Nathalie aime s'approcher tout près de son sujet.

The blessing of the branches is over and now the curé enters the church for the main service, followed by villagers. Note the decorated olive branches held by the young girl.

La bénédiction des rameaux est terminée et maintenant le curé, suivi par les villageois, entre dans l'église pour la messe. Remarquez le rameau d'olivier garni détenu par la jeune fille.

Palm Sunday in Gorbio - Blessing the Rameaux

This is what everyone is waiting for - the blessing of the branches. Each family will take their branches home and keep them for one year - it is believed that they bring good luck. At the end of the year, when they get the new branch blessed, then the old one will be burned.

In the main photo, the lady holding the little boy in her arms is Crystelle. She's our post lady who delivers letters and parcels to the commune and the village. I'm not sure what we'd do without Crystelle, always so helpful and always smiling. The older chlid in the foreground is her eldest son.

Voici ce que tout le monde attend - la bénédiction des Rameaux. Chaque famille aura des rameaux à la maison et de les conservera pendant un an car on croit qu'ils portent bonheur. L' année suivante quand on bénira les nouveaux rameaux, on brûlera les anciens.

Sur la photo principale, la dame tenant le petit garçon dans ses bras est Crystelle. C'est notre factrice qui distribue le courrier et les colis dans la commune et au village. Je ne sais pas ce que nous ferions sans Crystelle, toujours serviable et toujours souriante. L'enfant le plus âgé au premier plan est l'aîné de ses fils.

Palm Sunday in Gorbio - the Service

Outside the tiny Chapel des Penitents Blanc, the curé reads the service with help from the nice man who makes olive oil in the village. The curé dips a small bunch of boxwood, which serves as the aspergillum into the aspersory before blessing the branches.

Devant la petite chapelle des Pénitents Blanc, le curé lit le service aidé par le producteur de l'huile d'olive au village. Le curé trempe le buis qui sert de goupillon dans le seau d'eau bénite avant de bénir les rameaux.

Demain, on verra la bénédiction.
