Cervo - the Oratorio and the sea

Yesterday we saw the beautiful church in Cervo.  Today we are standing on the steps of that church looking down and out to sea. The tower in front of us is part of the Oratorio Santa Caterina.

Hier, nous avons vu la belle église de Cervo. Aujourd'hui, nous sommes debout sur les marches de cette église et nous regardons la mer au dessous. La tour en face de nous fait partie de l'Oratorio de Sainte Catherine.

Cervo - Church of San Giovanni Battista

Cervo is a beautiful medieval village near to Imperia in Liguria, Italy where it tumbles down the hillside to the sea below.

This is the church of San Giovanni Battista, known as the "church of the corals" because it was built thanks to the donations of the coral fishermen (an activity that died out after the great storm in 1720).  It's a grandiose example of Ligurian baroque architecture built by the Imperia architect Giambattista Marvaldi. Building started in 1686 and it was completed in 1784.

Cervo est un beau village médiéval près de la ville d' Impéria dans la région de Ligurie, en Italie, qui dévale une colline jusqu'à la mer en contrebas.

C'est l'église Saint Jean Baptiste, connue sous le nom d'"église des coraux", car elle a été construite grâce aux dons des pêcheurs de corail (une activité qui s'est éteinte après la grande tempête de 1720). C'est un exemple grandiose de l'architecture baroque ligure, construite par l' architecte d'Impéria, Giambattista Marvaldi. La construction a commencé en 1686 et s'est achevée en 1784.

The Dog and the Cat

This man is often to be seen in the pedestrian street of Menton begging with his dog and his cat.

He seems to have a relationship with them and certainly the little Chihuahua and the cat play happily together.

I still wish people wouldn't try to attract money though by displaying animals in this way.

 On voit souvent cet homme, mendiant avec son chien et son chat, dans la rue piétonne à Menton.

Il semble avoir des liens avec eux et le petit chihuahua et le chat jouent certainement joyeusement ensemble.

Mais j'aimerais que les gens n'essayent pas de gagner de l'argent en exposant des animaux de cette façon.

A Touch of the Sun

We are having very changeable weather in Menton - normal for March I'm sure.

So one day rain, the next a day where people lie in the sunshine.

Well, I'm no different but isn't it great when a couple like this - they saw me about to click - and gave their great smiles. And off they went - a moment in time.  I'll probably never see them again - but their smiles are preserved forever.  Thanks guys!

Les vélos  et les parapluies ont en eux quelque chose dont les photographes ne se lassent pas.
Eh bien, je ne suis pas différente, mais n'est-ce pas formidable d'avoir un couple comme celui-ci - ils m'ont vue en train de photographier et m'ont fait de grands sourires. Puis, ils se sont éloignés - un moment suspendu dans le temps.  Je ne vais probablement jamais les revoir - mais leurs sourires seront conservés indéfiniment. Merci les amis!

Zen Garden - the Elysée Reclus

The Village Bar

My favourite bar in my favourite village in all the world is the Bar/Restaurant Les Terrasses in the medieval village of Gorbio.  I like nothing better than to order a noisette and chat to people at the bar or take my coffee to a table and watch the world of the village go by.

That's Paul on the right with his daughter Vanessa - they own and run the place.  And on the left, meet Gil - he makes absolutely fabulous pizzas on Friday and Saturday evenings.  You'll see him on those days,  carrying the logs for the wood burning stove and preparing all the fresh ingredients. My favorite pizza is called the Gorbarine.  Of course!

Mon bar préféré dans mon village préféré au monde est le bar " Les Terrasses" au village médiéval de Gorbio. Je n'aime rien  tant que de commander une noisette en discutant avec les clients du bar ou de prendre mon café en terrasse en regardant passer les gens du village.

Voici Paul sur la droite avec sa fille Vanessa - ils possèdent et dirigent l'endroit. Et sur ​​la gauche, voici Gil - il fait des pizzas absolument délicieuses tous les vendredi et samedi soirs.  Ces jours là, vous le  rencontrerez, portant les bûches pour le poêle à bois et préparant tous ses ingrédients frais. Ma pizza préférée s'appelle "la Gorbarine." Of course!

Clematis Armandii

This wonderful plant produces the most amazing show of white flowers every spring and will drape its beauty over fences and trees. It's called Clematis Armandii and is an evergreen climber that needs absolutely no care in our Mediterranean climate. Stick it in the ground and it grows like Topsy.

Cette plante merveilleuse donne le plus étonnant spectacle de fleurs blanches au printemps et drape de  sa beauté les grillages des clôtures et les arbres. On l' appelle Clématis Armandii, c'est une plante grimpante à feuilles persistantes qui n'a absolument besoin d'aucun soin sous notre climat méditerranéen. On la met en terre et elle se  développe tout  à son aise. 

Fête du Citron - the Young Actress

This enchanting child was part of a group entertaining the crowd in the parade.  She rarely went out of character - a born actress I'd think.

Spring ...

According to Nice-Matin we've had a month's rain in three days - which means the plants are happy.

Today: sunshine!
