Tags or Graffiti?

The Old Town of Menton is having its ancient walls defaced with tags more and more.  I love some street art and this does show two silhouettes, but is this graffitti or simply mindless tagging? What do you think?

La vieille ville de Menton a ses vieux murs de plus en plus défigurés par des tags. J'aime l'art de rue et ceci montre deux silhouettes, mais est-ce vraiment de l'art de rue ou seulement des tags sans message?  Qu'en pensez-vous ?

Philippe Chiodi's Menton

Meet Philippe Chiodi, a Menton photographer and artist, whose work I adore. I love his eye for a photo. He is the first local photographer who inspired me to see things in Menton in a different way - and he continues to inspire me. His photo below won third prize in the photo competition 'Menton, Ville Onerique' - part of an exhibition at the gardens of the Serre de la Madone on the Route de Gorbio - and which continues until the 21st May.

'Onerique' seems to mean, in this instance, 'Menton, as in a dream' - as opposed to dreaming of Menton.

Voici Philippe Chiodi, un photographe et artiste de Menton, dont j'adore le travail. J'aime son regard sur la photographie. Il est le premier photographe local qui m'a donné envie de voir Menton d'une manière différente - et il continue de m'inspirer.  Sa photo ci-dessous a remporté le troisième prix du concours photo « Menton, Ville Onirique " faisant  partie d'une exposition dans les jardins de la Serre de la Madone sur la route de Gorbio - et qui se poursuit jusqu'au 21 mai.

Sara, on the left, and always smiling is the server.  Celine is the chef who produces such delicious and reasonably priced lunches.

We've left Italy and are back in the medieval village of Gorbio.  Light and shade in a passageway that leads to the top of the village.

Cervo - Lunch at the Bar San Giorgino

This was lunch at the Ristorante San Giorgino.  To begin, gnocchi with pesto sauce (SO good!) and for the main course brandade de morue (this is sdried salted cod that has been soaked and re-constituted and then mixed with potato. Sounds awful I know but it's to die for delicious - a speciality of the Mediterranean.  And of course we had a glass of wine apiece. Superbe too.

This room in the Ristorante San Giorgino housed The Sangiorgino, an ancient oil-mill which dates back to the 13th Century and is now used as a shop, a wine bar for tastings and also for a 19 euro lunch such as we had.

Voici le déjeuner au Restaurant San Giorgino. Pour commencer, gnocchi au pesto ( TRES bon ! ) Et pour  plat principal,  brandade de morue (c'est de la morue séchée et salée qui a été trempée puis cuite  et ensuite mélangée avec de pommes de terre. Cela semble dégoutant je sais, mais pourtant c'est à mourir de délices -  une spécialité de la Méditerranée. Et bien sûr, nous avons eu un verre de vin chacune. Superbe aussi.

Cette salle du Restaurant San Giorgino se trouve dans Le Sangiorgino, un ancien moulin à huile qui remonte au 13ème siècle et qui est maintenant utilisé comme une boutique, un bar à vin pour des dégustations et aussi pour des déjeuners à 19 Euros, comme celui que nous avons pris.

Cervo - the Wine Bar

My friend Sylvie, a fellow photographer who lives in Menton, accompanied me to Cervo and naturally an important part of the visit was lunch.  We found a great looking restaurant with a 19 euro menu. We walked in and were seated in the beautiful dining room of the Restaurant San Giorgio.  So far so good untill we realised the set menu was 60 euros, not 19.

Whoops!  At first we thought we'd walked into the wrong restaurant but in fact the 19 euro menu is served in the restaurant's wine bar. Same kitchen! So it sounded good to us. And it was!

Look at this beautiful wine bar with its ancient brick ceiling - you see a small part ending in the restaurant's collection of champagnes.

But more on this tomorrow. Lunch needs to be lingered over,  especially in Italy ...

Mon amie Sylvie, une photographe compatriote qui vit à Menton, m'a accompagnée à Cervo et naturellement le déjeuner fut  un moment  important de la visite. Nous avons trouvé un restaurant avec un  menu à 19 euros. Nous sommes entrées et nous sommes assises dans la belle salle à manger du Restaurant San Giorgio. Jusque là tout allait  bien jusqu'à ce nous réalisions que le menu était à 60 euros et non à 19.
Oups! Au début, nous avons pensé nous être trompées de restaurant, mais en fait, le menu à 19 euros est servi dans le bar à vin du restaurant. Même cuisine! Donc c'était ce qu'il nous fallait. Et c'était bien!
Regardez ce bar à vin magnifique avec son plafond en briques anciennes - vous voyez une petite partie qui se termine avec la collection de champagnes du restaurant.
Mais demain nous en saurons plus. Le déjeuner a besoin d'être détaillé, surtout en Italie...

Cervo - the Font

If you were born in the 15th century and lived in Cervo, you'd have been baptized in this beautiful baptismal font. You doubtless wouldn't have seen the empty cardboard box.

Si vous étiez nés au 15ème siècle et aviez vécu à Cervo, vous auriez été baptisés sur ce beau fond baptismal. Mais vous n'auriez sans doute pas vu le carton vide.

Cervo - Church of San Giovanni Battista 2

Today we are inside the beautiful Church of San Giovanni Battista. It has a single nave, and contains various works of art including a white marble pulpit dating from the XVI century. Left of the altar is a wooden crucifix by sculptor Anton Maria Maragliano.

Aujourd'hui, nous sommes à l'intérieur de la belle église de San Giovanni Battista. Elle n' a qu'une seule nef  et contient diverses œuvres d'art dont une chaire en marbre blanc datant du XVIe siècle. A gauche de l' autel se trouve un crucifix en bois du sculpteur Anton Maria Maragliano.
