Restaurant L'Ulivo - Sylvano the Chef

Meet Sylvano Gastaldi, the chef at the Sardinian restaurant L'Ulivo, which is tucked away at the end of Place du Cap, Menton.  Super food, some of which we'll see tomorrow. Sylvano was chef for years on the big Cunard liners and said he'd been around the world six times. Glad he's in Menton now as he's a good cook!

The restaurant is housed in a building that is classified as a monument historique in France with its beautiful trompe l'oeil facade.  I'm told the Mayor of Menton is a regular visitor and is a friend of the owner, Pascal.

I was lucky enough to be taken there by my friend Peter from Peter's Paris who came to stay for a couple of nights. Thank you Peter!

Voici Sylvano Gastaldi, le chef du restaurant sarde L'Ulivo, qui est niché au bout de la Place du Cap à Menton. La cuisine y est excellente, comme nous le verrons demain. Silvano a été le chef pendant des années sur les grands paquebots de la Cunard Line et dit qu'il a fait le tour du monde à six reprises. Maintenant, il est heureux à Menton où il montre ses talents de  bon cuisinier!
Le restaurant est situé dans un immeuble classé monument historique de France pour ses beaux  trompe-l'œil. On me dit que le Maire de Menton est un client régulier ainsi qu'un ami du propriétaire, Pascal.
J'ai eu beaucoup de chance d'être invitée là par mon ami Peter de 'Peter's Paris' qui est venu pour passer deux nuits. Merci Peter!

Donkey Day Out

Two donkeys wander down towards the old village in Gorbio. They've escaped from somewhere but doubtless their owner will appear sooner or later to take them home. Meanwhile, the sides of the road are getting a haircut.

Deux ânes vagabonds  descendant vers le vieux village de Gorbio. Ils ont du s'échapper de quelque part mais sans doute quelqu'un va apparaître tôt ou tard pour les ramener chez eux. Pendant ce temps, les côtés de la route bénéficient d'une coupe d'herbe.

Uses for a Chair

Bussana Vecchia near San Remo, is the village destroyed in an earthquake at the end of the 19th century. I've posted about this village before and how it was taken over by artists in the 60s and is still undergoing restoration. How about a blue door, a chair for a plant holder and the dog as a cute bonus!

Bussana Vecchia près de San Remo, est ce village détruit lors d'un séisme à la fin du 19ème siècle. J'ai déjà écrit sur ce village, la façon dont il a été repeuplé par des artistes dans les années 60 et sa restauration toujours en cours. Que pensez-vous d'une porte bleue, d'une chaise pour tenir un pot et le joli chien en bonus!

The Cooking Lesson - Eating the Spoils

A croque-monsieur (toasted ham and cheese sandwich) for the little girl on the left - and courgette fritters for the one on the right.

I had some of the fritters and can tell you they were delicious, with the lightest batter. These children are going to grow up good cooks!

J'ai goûté deux beignets et je peux vous dire qu'ils étaient délicieux, avec la plus légère des pâtes. Ces enfants vont grandir en  bons cuisiniers!

The Cooking Lesson - Start Young!

Some children get the opportunity to learn to cook early in life and this little one certainly does. Céloine is the adorable daughter of Celine, the chef at Chez Paulo and who is teaching these children today. Such a serious look but in fact she was tired as she'd missed her nap.

Certains enfants ont l'occasion d'apprendre à cuisiner tôt dans la vie et c'est certainement le cas de cette petite. Céloine est la fille adorable de Céline, le chef du restaurant Chez Paulo qui enseigne à ces enfants aujourd'hui. Un regard très sérieux mais qui en fait montre sa fatigue car elle avait raté sa sieste.

The Cooking Lesson - Beignets

If you want to get your children to eat their veggies, get them to make beignets (fritters) of courgettes and auberginea, which is what these children are doing and when cooked, the beignets disappeared very quickly! Here they are making the batter.

Si vous voulez faire manger des légumes à vos enfants, faites-leur confectionner des beignets de courgettes et d'aubergines comme le font ces enfants et dès qu'ils seront cuits, ces  beignets disparaitront très rapidement! Ici, ils préparent la pâte à frire.

The Cooking Lesson - Meet the Children

How's this for a bunch of happy children! They are members of JLED (Leisure, Studies and Discoveries for Young People),  an association in Gorbio for children of the village aged 6 to 14 years . They meet on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons for activities as diverse as painting , music , sports, cooking, making jewelry, sewing, decorating and mounting humanitarian or social projects. And they meet on Tuesdays evenings for school support. The organisation is run by adults who give so generously of their time. On this occasion, the children met to cook - a subject very dear to every French person's heart - and stomach!

Voici un groupe d'enfants heureux ! Ils sont membres de JLED (Jeuness Loisirs Etudes et Découvertes), une association de Gorbio pour les enfants du village âgés de 6 à 14 ans. Ils se réunissent le mercredi et le samedi après-midi pour des activités aussi diverses que la peinture, la musique, le sport, la cuisine, la fabrication de bijoux, la couture, la décoration et le montage des projets humanitaires ou sociaux. Et ils se réunissent mardi soir pour du soutien scolaire. L'organisation est gérée par des adultes qui donnent très généreusement de leur temps. A cette occasion, les enfants se sont réunis pour cuisiner - un sujet très cher au cœur de tous les Français - et de leurs estomacs!

Jacqueline and Rosalie

If you want half a dozen new-laid eggs or veggies from the potager, you go the square of Gorbio around 11.30h and you'll find Jacqueline. Here she is, a delightful lady and so proud of her pet lamb, Rosalie. who is 2 months old.

Si vous désirez une demi-douzaine d'œufs frais ou des légumes du potager, vous allez sur la place de Gorbio vers 11h30 et vous trouverez Jacqueline. Voila cette charmante dame, si fière  de sa petite agnelle, Rosalie qui est âgée de 2 mois.

Bench

A bench under an olive tree is the perfect place to take a break after the climb to the top of the village of Gorbio.

Mint

We met little Ylan the other day. Here he is at the Restaurant Beausejour in Gorbio drinking a Menthe a l'eau, which is a mint syrup mixed with water. Wonderfully refreshing.
